    From the hockeycanada site:

BRECLAV, Czech Republic - Zach Hamill assisted on Canada's first two goals and paced our Under-18 Team to a 5-3 win over Switzerland in the opening game of the 2005 Under-18 Junior World Cup. Canada's next game is Wednesday versus Sweden.

Hmmm, funny they mention Hamill's two assists and ignore Toews' hat trick.

Why does the US team often suck at this tournament? Is their whole U18 program geared to the IIHF WC?

I really don't think this is considered as a tournament where you win "a gold medal" and for sure you don't win a World Championship. For European nations it's the biggest tournament for preparing to the U18 Worlds, but also a one held in a pre-season.

But still, obviously a good performance from Canada.

Simply because their better players do not attend. Those who have made the NTDP do not participate in this event.
