The regular season just determines who goes into the playoffs and in what position. It's never done anything else.

Not really. You hardly ever see 8th seeds just taking it to number 1 seeds.

This is the second time in NHL history an 8th seed has led the #1 3-0 in the opening round. Hardly common place.

Playoffs are just a very different game. Being able to win lots of games against a random mixed bag of teams in low pressure situations does not necessarily translate to being able to do it against the same team over and over in a best of 7. One that is planning how to exploit your weaknesses with the intensity turned up.

Cup winners since the last lockout:

‘18 - Washington - finished 6th.
‘17 - Penguins - finished 2nd.
‘16 - Penguins - finished 4th.
‘15 - Chicago - finished 7th.
‘14 - Kings - finished 10th.
‘13 - Chicago - finished 1st.

So, yeah. You pretty much have to be an elite team to win the Cup. 50% of Cup winners finished in the top 5 in the league. 100% finished in the top 10.

The CBJ were the 3 seed a large portion of the year but had dives in very significant points that would cause a losing streak.

Murray going down really hurt the team because he was the stabalizing force that let us split Jones and Z because they werent playing well together frankly until the playoffs. They were better apart.

The TDL caused some chemistry issues. Bob was looking out it looked like and he wasnt great.

Folignos 2 times missing for his children having serious medical issues.

Once we got Foligno back I think we have lost 1 or 2 total. We arent your normal 8 seed. Our team on paper is easily 3rd or 4th best it was just a matter of getting on the same page.
