With where we are at and have been as a franchise, taking these type of risks is what we are gonna have to do to get us back to contenders. Hopefully this works out. Also if we bridged Thompson and he repeated, we would be paying him, Power and Dahlin within a year of one another. All likely big deals.

Who knows what he finishes with (currently pacing for 66 goals 126 points) but let's assume it's 55 goals 110 points. What his contract look like? 11 mil AAV? Higher?

The amount of cap room we saved signing him this past offseason is absurd.

They’re going to be extra happy they got this deal done when Cozens and Dahlin get to the table this off-season.

If Tage wasn’t done he would get such a massive deal just because he’d have to get more than Cozens…who is going to bring comparables to the table higher than Tage makes now. If all three were looking at deals…I mean…he was getting PAID.

There’s no argument to pay Dahlin less than the 9.5 guys like Jones, Werenski and Nurse. And you aren’t buying up half the contract in RFA years like Fox and Makar. This man is getting 8 digits easy.

So Tage gets between them and his floor on a new deal is over 9 million. You’ve effectively saved, at the bare miminum, 2 million per year for the next 7 years on a best case scenario after this year.

which is great because Cozens is taking it right away.

If we still had O'Reilly we'd be winning draws

All hail the Giraffe God! Tage "TNT" Boom Boom Thompson. This kid is unreal! His ability to bump off of a big defender while in control of the puck in tight, is crazy. His elite hand eye coordination and his shot. You combine that with the silky skating and nice around the net play of Skinner and the all around skating and game of Tuch, and you have a top line that just works. For a season and a half it has produced and it won't stop! Keep it up boy!

It's even better than that.

If Tage got 11mil, Dahlin would be asking for at least the same amount.

Actually very funny
The list of players that I would trade Thompson for straight up is short and doesn't include Auston.

That's the beauty of Tage taking the deal that he took and the conversation right now from many of the core guys about staying together for a long time. Could they be setting up to get some slight discounts that allow them to keep their salary structure in place to pay the core for year after year? The Cozens and Dahlin deals will be interesting, but having Thompson and Samuelsson locked in starts to build that framework.

The xBuff pod had an interesting conversation around how much does the Thompson contract affect the Cozens extension talks as Tage is outperforming his extension before it even kicks in and Cozens is having a year that might be even better than what Tage put up last season.

I'm not saying that Tage is better than McDavid, but he has two 6 point games this season and McDavid only has 1 in his entire career :sarcasm:

On a serious note however, many people hated on this deal and didn't bat an eye at the Thomas or Kyrou deals the Blues handed out. It's so satisfying seeing so many other teams fans willingly eat crow about Tage now on the main boards. He only needs 60 points in the next 56 games to be the first Sabres player to reach 100 points since Lafontaine and Mogilny in the 92-93 season.

As soon as i mentioned that Tage is a 2nd line center, he went into another stratosphere with his play.
So, as an anti-jinx, i have to repeat this fact.

He is a 2nd liner, he's just on a tear right now, but when all is said an done he will be your typical 2nd line centerman. Maybe they could even try him on the 3rd line, because we saw how he can feast on weaker teams this season. So basically a 2C/possibly 3C
