MSU receives $1.5 million from Gary & Joanne Harpell for Munn Expansion

EAST LANSING -- Building on the rich tradition of Michigan State ice hockey and expanding on its future, MSU Athletics announced $1.5 million gift to the Munn Ice Arena expansion project from former Spartan Hockey player Gary Harpell and his wife Joanne Harpell. ...

Gary, a 1982 alumnus, played on the Spartan Hockey team from 1978-82, including for legendary coaches Amo Bessone and Ron Mason. ...

The renovation started in 2019, was paused in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and is resuming this summer.

The $26.2 million, 35,000-square-foot facility will dramatically improve the Big Ten's second oldest ice arena (built in 1974) by elevating many areas from ice level to above ground, including a weight room, training room, film room, offices, conference rooms and administrative spaces. Fans will be welcomed through a new "front door" entrance on the south end, complete with an MSU Hockey hall of history. ...

To date, nearly $17 million has been raised for the expansion project. The Harpells, along with five other donors, including Tom and Lupe Izzo and the Forest Akers Trust, have committed over $1 million each to the facility. In all, 89 donors have stepped up with gifts of $10,000 or more. ...

GLI Down-scaling to 'Showcase' Format

CHN Staff Report

For 55 years, the Great Lakes Invitational took place over a couple days in downtown Detroit. The vaunted holiday tournament is now changing formats.

Instead of a tournament, the GLI will now be a "showcase," with two games each being played at Michigan and Michigan State. There will be no champion crowned for the first time.

Western Michigan and Michigan Tech are the other teams involved. WMU will play Michigan State on Dec. 29, with MTU playing at Michigan. WMU and MTU will then switch to the other venue on Dec. 30.

Waning attendance at the GLI in recent years, plus difficulty finding dates that work in the new Little Caesars Arena, have forced this decision. ...

Detroit Free Press

Western Michigan's hockey season is just over two months away, but the Broncos will have a new coach behind the bench for the first time in a decade.

Owen Power explains decision to go back to Michigan after being selected No. 1 overall in NHL draft

Watch a single shift of Owen Power and it’s easy to see the comparisons many make between the current Michigan defender and top-tier NHL defenseman Victor Hedman.

Big, smooth skating and heavily effective at both ends of the ice. Those qualities excited the Buffalo Sabres enough to select Power No. 1 overall in this summer’s NHL Entry Draft. Power even admits to looking up to and emulating the two-time Stanley Cup champion.

But the Sabres will have to wait at least a year for Power’s services, allowing Michigan to get another season of the 6-foot-5 defender. He’s the first No. 1 overall pick in an NHL Entry Draft since 2007-08 to not report straight to his team.

“I think just another year of development,” Power said to NCAA.com when asked why he decided to return to Michigan. “Just continue to get better and develop with another year. Last year we didn’t really get a true experience of playing hockey at Michigan, so I think that had a little bit to do with it just with the COVID last year and everything that went on with that. I think coming back one more year and trying to win a national championship and just using this extra year as a time to make a leap in my development.” ...
