I thought this might be of interest to some ATD GMs as a resource.

Here is a link to a spreadsheet that contains special teams scoring stats for all players from 1952-53 to 1986-87. The scoring numbers are compiled from the Hockey Summary Project's boxscores.

Official NHL stats are available for PPG, SHG, and ESG from 1963-64 until 1986-87 at www.hockey-reference.com. The numbers in this file don't always match up with the official numbers. That's probably because of changes to the official stats that were not reflected in the boxscores.

Also, for the most part the numbers are by last names only. I have added first names for many of the more prominent players that share last names (Howe, Hull, Esposito, Richard, Sutter, Savard, Nilsson, etc), but for others you will just have to look at the team they played for to identify the player.

For years from 1987-88 and on, you can find full official NHL special teams scoring stats at www.hockeyhunter.com. Recent years are also available at www.nhl.com.

(The file also contains records of first and second assists, in case anyone is interested. I'm not really sure what to make of them, but if anyone wants to use the info it's there.)

I just found an error in the spreadsheet I posted. The 1957-58 shorthanded scoring stats were missing.

I've corrected the error and re-uploaded the spreadsheet, so if you have already downloaded it you should download the new version. Sorry about that.

Also, I posted shorthanded scoring stats for the Original 6 years from 1952-53 on. Those were missing the 1957-58 numbers. Here's an updated list.

Player | GP | SHG | SHA | SHP
Gordie Howe | 1030 | 19 | 15 | 34
Eric Nesterenko | 894 | 22 | 10 | 32
Jerry Toppazzini | 783 | 19 | 13 | 32
Don Marshall | 862 | 16 | 13 | 29
Bob Pulford | 727 | 23 | 5 | 28
Ron Stewart | 964 | 14 | 12 | 26
Alex Delvecchio | 1024 | 16 | 9 | 25
Red Kelly | 990 | 12 | 10 | 22
Fleming Mackell | 483 | 10 | 8 | 18
Allan Stanley | 901 | 2 | 14 | 16
George Armstrong | 942 | 7 | 9 | 16
Bobby Hull | 674 | 10 | 5 | 15
Norm Ullman | 817 | 6 | 9 | 15
Dave Keon | 472 | 9 | 5 | 14
Tim Horton | 978 | 3 | 11 | 14

Fleming Mackell joins the list. He and Toppazzini were a very dangerous duo while shorthanded in 1957-58, as Mackell led the league with 8 SHP and Toppazzini led with 6 SHG.

What's really interesting is that Bob Pulford has the most SHG during this time, but only the 5th-most points because he is dead last in assists among those players. I wonder why this is. Just a statistical anomaly?

overpass, do you happen to have any data for Billy Taylor? Specifically, his PP scoring.

Damn, look at those Don Marshall numbers. :yo:

Also, look at all the Maple Leafs, including the defensemen.

By the way, what's the breakdown of Kelly's numbers? How many of those were as a defenseman in Detroit and how many were as a forward in Toronto?

These numbers are low enough that it could well be a statistical anomaly. Either that, or Pulford liked to shoot on 2-on-1's.

Kelly had 8 SHG and 15 SHP in Detroit, and 4 SHG and 7 SHP in Toronto. His SHG look a little high for a defenceman - maybe he played some centre on the PK?

No, I don't have any PP scoring from before 1952-53.

One question that keeps coming up - Who actually killed penalties for the Montreal Canadiens of the Original 6 era?

Here is a list of shorthanded points by Montreal Canadiens 1952-53 to 1966-67. All 30 skaters who played at least 200 games with the team during this time are included.

Definitely worth noting that Montreal looks to have played very conservatively on the PK compared to other teams listed in the OP of this thread.
