Something like Haula (850k)+ Carrier for Vesey+2022 3rd round pick seems to work.

Cap neutral for both teams, Nashville gets a pick and another guy they can sell off (probably to another Canadian team since he won't need to quarantine). Toronto gets a top 9 center and a bit of depth for the blueline.

Why would we give up Carrier?

You can have Haula for a 3rd round pick. Leave everything else out of it. Or we'll trade Haula for just a 4th to somebody else.

Toronto
Why would Nashville do this considering if there are other teams interested in Granlund and they don't have to retain any salary or take a bad contract back to make it work. Why would Nashville help out Toronto?

They wouldn't. Toronto would have to overpay for NSH to agree to retain.

We're not getting rid of our prospects, especially not for Vesey who we already have a bad history with. Either you want Haula or you want Carrier, can't have both.

What the Leafs should probably try doing first is putting Kerfoot, Vesey, or Engvall on waivers. THEN if they get claimed and you suddenly have the cap room available, give the Preds a call. If you don't have the cap room... it doesn't make sense to really pay a premium or go all out trying to win a bidding war when you've got the extra burden of trying to move out $$$ while competing with other teams who don't have that same constraint.

He seems to one of those few that actually play well in Nashville these days.
Hope he goes to contender as he has lot to offer in a right spot.
He is back to his good game this season and plays well every where in the ice.

This will be an interesting year.
Lot of teams dont have much cap space to add so they have to send salary back and for some of these teams does getting an extra 3rd round pick justify picking up another million dollars in salary from retention or salary back? For fans it does, but I'm sure some of these owners would rather have the cash

I'd say Granlund has been an average to maybe a bit above average 9th overall pick. Not setting the world on fire with his career but not shitting the bed either. Have you looked at the other 9th overall picks in the last decade or so?
Yes. 3-4 seasons of decent offensive production is underwhelming and that is understatement.
From 2016 and prior: Sergachev, Meier, Ehlers, Horvat, Trouba, Hamilton, Granlund. Its a mixed bag prior to that.

If you asked any scout, he would tell you the same thing, You expect more from that draft position.

you have to look at the draft class as well. Sure there were late round hits with Stone and Gallagher but look at the players taken 3rd-8th overall in 2010. Gudbranson, Johansen, Niederreiter, Connolly, Skinner and Burmistrov. I don't think there is a player that went in those slots that you would trade Granlund for 1 for 1 right now. I'm not sure why draft position is an issue 11 years later anyway, feels like an attempt to pile on a player for no good reason.

Draft position absolutely matters. If he was a 7th rnd pick, nobody would care. The 9th overall spot holds a LOT of value and always will.

Leafs are in the drivers seat on most trades since the bulk of teams will need to sell to cut down on cap costs.

just Poile trying to get some buzz for Granlund

For sure. GMs generate interest from other GMs by having insiders toss out rumors. I've heard that is actually THE most effective way to drive up trade value and interest.

Leafs are in the drivers seat on most trades since the bulk of teams will need to sell to cut down on cap costs.

I think you have this completely backwards. Cap costs aren't going to matter much at the deadline for selling teams, the Leafs need to shed cap to take on any, so they are certainly not "in the drivers seat".

It would certainly be good for Granlund anyway. In terms of likely being able to boost his scoring totals back up prior to seeking a new LTC next year.

Might not be that great for a guy in the US with a young family being sent across the border, though. Not that he necessarily has any say, but Poile may be humane about such things.

Kerfoot isn't a waiver wire candidate. He's a trade candidate if they're adding so much cap space that they'll need to shed his contract. If not he's Seattle best chance at a good player from Toronto.
