I am surprised I haven't seen a thread like this yet. So I figure I'd start it. It's actually a well disguised "DOES Rielly make the team" thread :D

Here is my best guess assuming there aren't any new trades or signings.

Lupul-Kadri-Kessel

JVR-Grabovski-Kulemin

Macarthur-Bozak-Frattin

Connolly-Steckel<->McClement Steckel takes the draws then drops to the wing?

Phaneuf-Gunnarson

Gardiner-Liles (hmm)

Komisarek-Rielly

Reimer
Scrivens

There is a pretty big mess with players who don't fit anywhere. I think a trade or two are going to happen before the 19th. Most likely on Monday. Remember there was nothing to stop the GM's from talking to one another.

I think our top two lines look very competitive. Our 3rd line is also very capable of scoring goals. This is more of a 3-1 forward group than a 2-2 like Burke wanted.

Our top pairing should be solid. I am hoping Gardiner is ready for the season and that he continues his strong play. Liles is hit or miss.. but wasn't he a quick starter last season? Komisarek knows this is his last chance to have an NHL job. If he gets any sort of new contract it won't be for $4.5million that's for sure. I say it every year because I like the guy off the ice.. but he is due for a good season! And of course Morgan (Orr) Rielly the new saviour is destined for greatness!

Our goalie situation isn't all that bad. All I am hearing is Luongo to Toronto almost a sure thing! I'd love him on the Leafs but at what cost? If we don't get him, I think Reimer will show that his first season wasn't a fluke and shut the haters up!

GO LEAFS GO

Signed (NHL) players that aren't on my opening day line up

Lombardi, Brown, Orr(capgeek says hes a buried contract), Franson, Mottau, Holzer (things are looking bad for Komi because Holzer might take his spot).

There should be some competition for the defensive slots in the lineup!

Well what do you think?

I really hope that Kadri works out and is the #1 C playing with Kessel... I know that most will say that is not possible, but who knows. The kid has incredible hands.

All I'm hoping for is to run Carlyle's cup winning
1st line - offense
2nd line - shutdown others top line
3rd line - kid line
4th line - Pk / energy

Whatever line is going to be used as a shut-down unit will have Jay McClement at center. Carlyle love's his match-up centers, and McClement was brought in specifically for that role.

interesting on Kadri trying at #1 C. I have a problem with his faceoffs though, is he any good in that area?

I'm fine with an all offense line, if you have really good defensive lines behind them.

I'd try that for sure, very balanced lineup. However steckel is still useful with his faceoff prowress. Why not bozak on the wing? Bozak-Mcclement-Frattin? Macarthur should be gone in a trade IMO.

Touche.. I have been watching a bunch of 7 foot guys play with a big orange ball for the last few months.. I need to get my hockey lingo back! The thread title should have been "Who makes the Leafs" or something like that :).

Yeah forgot about Steckel.. very good faceoff man but limited otherwise imo.. Agreed with the MacArthur trade too. In fact halfway through assembling that I remembered the surplus of mediocre forward depth we have. Definitely need to make some room..

Ah. Would've loved to see him get a trial with Kessel. LW on the PP maybe?

It'd be interesting. I'd want to see something where they get him in front of the net (obviously). But then again with the way Dion shoots..

I thought Ulmer nailed it with this blog post:

http://blog.mapleleafs.com/what-the-leafs-lineup-could-look-like/

Lupul - Bozak - Kessel
JVR - Grabovski - MacArthur
Komarov - McClement - Kulemin
Brown - Steckel - Frattin

Phaneuf - Gunnarsson
Gardiner - Holzer
Liles - Komisarek

Reimer
Scrivens

It's not what I want to see; but I think it's roughly how it will play out. I would like to see Kadri crack the roster.

To me Bozak and CMac have to go so one of Connolly or Kadri can take the top center spot, the other the third line wing. Those two and a 2nd for Luongo solves everything.

Lupul -Kadri - Kessel
JVR -Grabo- Frattin
Conn -McCl- Kule
Komaro -Steck- Brown

Spares: Lombo, Colborne

Gardiner can't be ready for the season, I think Franson resigned for the chance to be playing quality minutes.

Lupul - Bozak - Kessel
JVR - Grabo - Mac
Komarov - Connolly - Kulemin
Brown - McClement - Frattin

Phaneuf - Gunnarson
Liles - Franson
Holzer - Komisarek

Either switch komarov and Frattin or put Frattin in the minors and call somebody else up and I'll probably agree... Although I really really want Kadri up and I think he'll finally get his chance this year!

EDIT: Connoly will actually probably be the 3rd line RW, RC seemed to like him in the limited time last year in a shut-down role
