Man, the Kazakhs might not be that great at hockey but they're nasty at shootouts.

just wow. Some really questionable coaching decisions before and during this game.

Hlavaj getting a back-to-back when we have a completely viable option of Skorvanek
Chromiak benched
Cacho and Lantosi playing in OT instead of guys who can actually score

This is Eye of Ra “is Sweden worse than Uganda now” level of misses from you
It's the first time ever Kazakhstan has defeated Slovakia in the IIHF World Championship.. they're like the 20th strongest hockey country. Belarus worked them in the pre-tournament. The overall tournament implications make it that much worse for Slovakia.

It's the same Slovakia that beat Latvia head-to-head in regulation and took Canada to OT. You are playing 3D chess. They are still huge favorites in their 2 remaining games.

I definitely wouldn’t consider it our worse loss in history, not even close. Kazakhstan has pulled off upsets even in the past few tournaments, in 2021 they beat both Finland and Latvia in the preliminary round. This isn’t like losing to Great Britain or something, this is a legit team of KHL players. We only beat them by 1 goal last year.

Cehlarik, our best offensive player is out injured and missed the game. Not to mention all the other roster selections, and all the missing forwards and dmen based in Europe alone. Not to mention the NHL guys.

Again, it’s a bad loss but to say it’s the worse loss in history is clearly a massive overreaction. Even for me, probably the most critical slovak on this site

Huh? Latvia still needs to either get a point against Swiss or hope Slovakia losses some more.
If Latvia beats the Kazakhstan in regulation, Slovakia can't catch them. Unless Norway finds another gear, 11 points will be enough to get through.

If Latvia wins they will have 11 points, assuming they don’t get any points vs Swiss. If Slovakia wins against slovenia and Norway they will have 11 points. Slovakia advances because of the tie breaker.

HF boards is so cooked. :help:

No. If Slovakia beats Norway and Slovenia, they will end ahead of Latvia unless Latvia gets something vs. the Swiss.

worst loss in Slovakian hockey history... heads need to roll

it's not "clinched" but if you look at it mathematically, Latvia is extremely likely to advance
If they manage to gain at least one point in the game vs. Switzerland.

Never mind. Lost to Kazakhstan today, not Latvia.

Kazakhs were spectacular in that shootout. Or maybe Hlavaj was weak. I can't tell. But it was nice seeing them win I guess. I am a sucker for the underdog, always.

Oh well, gotta hope the Swiss play at least as well against Latvia as they did vs us now.

Good on Kazakhstan, their team is much more likeable now that they've purged all the NA imports. Actually representative of the country now and good to see a nation be competitive outside of NA/Europe.

Latvia needs points vs. the Swiss if Slovakia wins outright the two remaining games.
Kazakhstan will be guaranteed to stay up next year unless Slovenia can take a point from Slovakia.

59% chance Slovakia beats both Norway and Slovenia in regulation.

75% chance Latvia beats Kazakhstan in regulation.

If both of these scenarios happen (44% likelihood), Latvia needs to get at least a point off of Switzerland (34% chance).

Combined, the odds are almost 50/50 between Slovakia and Latvia right now. If Latvia beats Kazakhstan in regulation tomorrow, they become the favorites to qualify.

This is going to be a very close one.
