At age 28 with the season he has had surprised he opted not to go to free agency. He should still get a contract. Should have been worth the risk.

But, to each their own.

Maybe he does... but what happens if he doesn't? You're talking about turning down a contract that will quadruple your net worth on a chance he gets what... the same thing? Something marginally better? Something worse? He could take that chance, and very easily be left holding his ball, and being forced to accept a much smaller contract. Remember Vokoun when he was looking for his big home run contract back in what... 2010? Didn't get it and ended up signing a 1 yr 1.5m deal with Washington. And Vokoun prior to that had earned millions (~25/30m?). Dell doesn't have that luxury to fall back on.

After this contract... yeah I could see him being pickier about where he signs and what his chances are with whomever he signs in regards to a shot at a starter role (or at least challenging for said spot). But right now? Financially it makes much more sense to grab that guaranteed money and run all the way to the bank.

He should have waited until summer to at least get a 3-4 year term. Great job by Dougie Wilson though.

And what happens if he doesn't get that, and SJ finds another backup? Lots of HF posters talk about "maxing out their value" without recognizing the substantial risk that comes with it. This isn't Thornton, Marleau, Shattenkirk or even Schultz who've all made millions of dollars and would be in high demand... this is player who's over the course of his pro career has made maybe 1m - most of that this season. Taking a contract that guaranteed him at least 3.2m, and almost certainly the full 3.8m was the right move. In 2 years, he can afford to be a little pickier about trying to find the best situation. At least then he'll have a few million in the bank to fall back on.

Especially with the volatility and the generally flooded market that is goaltending. There's only 62 NHL jobs for that position and there are more than 62 players that could fill one of those spots.

Dell explains his rationale for staying here:

Aaron Dell signs a two-year contract extension with Sharks

Makes sense for sure. I'd have to think even with his numbers tailing off a bit that a few teams would've at least kicked the tires on him had he elected to become a free agent, but there's a lot of goalies out there (and only a limited number of opportunities)... It makes sense for him to want security. Like he said in that article, this is his first one-way contract. And he's not old in goalie terms.

Let's not forget that this is a sizeable raise, that he has gotten to play quite a bit this year (and with a strong team)
