Many times we've seen people get "career" or "lifetime" awards for something even if they might not have deserved it that year and there was someone more deserving of the actual award. The Oscars are a prime example of this, but other award shows do it as well. So my question is should Ovechkin win the Hart trophy and/or Lindsey Award when he finally breaks Gretzky's goal record? Sure he might not be the best player that year, but it would be a nice way to celebrate his career and what he's been able to accomplish. And it would be a great pr move by the league and the players.

Yes, especially if the record setting goal is the only one he scores on the particular season. Throw in an honorary Maurice Richard trophy for that 1-0-1 statline in 2025-26.

Crosby got a career award in 2016 when he won the Conn Smythe over Phil Kessel. It does happen even in hockey...
And Ovi got one in 2018 over Kuz? If Ovi is top 3 when he breaks the record I could see the voters giving it to him, if he's nowhere near the top he's not getting it.

Crosby Kessel was 50/50 , you could argue either deserves it

No. Especially since the record has no great meaning. Ovechkin broke the record for shots attempted per game to reach Gretzky with an unimpressive percentage of success.

Ya man, goals are meaningless in hockey.
That's not what it means.

Ovechkin has already smashed the career shot record and already has more than 1,300 more shots than Gretzky.

Ovechkin is 12.9% career efficient. The Top 250 in history (with a significant number of shots) is beyond 14%. Draisaitl has 18.1%.

The record means nothing because many other players could have scored more goals than Ovechkin by taking more shots.

If his season is worthy of the awards and he's "in the mix" then sure it would be cool. But he's not going to put up a hart/lindsay worthy season again so no. Have to be earned, not given.

Getting sog isn't easy nor guaranteed. This isn't basketball where essentially every possession involves a shot and percentages matter, getting a higher volume of shots is a good thing.

It's probably one of the most impressive records of all time no matter how many shots it takes

Ovechkin is just waiting to be given the puck. He gets nothing by himself.

Record not impressive because if other players had limited themselves to the style of Ovechkin, they would have done much better.

If the 2018 campaign hadn't been a winning one, Ovechkin would never have reached the NHL top 4 with Washington in his 20-year career. His game was not really valuable.

What if he scores two goals that season (one tying, and one breaking the record)???
