This reminds me of the Habs/Bolts weekend from a few weeks ago. Want to win this game comfortably so Allen doesn't have much of a workload. Then a game which has a bigger impact on the playoff race.

What makes this tricky is the Leafs on Tuesday. We may go with Kahkonen regardless of the outcome today. I don't see us rolling Allen in three of four days. Although if he is up for the challenge, I wouldn't be opposed.

Devils should call up Daws for this game or tomorrow to give Allen some rest. Daws is better than Kahkonen and too good for the AHL at this point.

Accountability means that Smith taking bad penalties or having a crazy defensive choice that led to a goal must be punished.

So he has to play today instead of getting a paid day off.

Our PK has been doing really well lately and that’s with Smith playing way way more minutes on it than any other defenseman with Siegenthaler and Marino out.

Hatakka doesn’t PK much and has the worst underlying numbers on the PK in the recent games.

Now this isn’t going to help us in the future, maybe if/when we’re completely out of playoff bubble later they should sit him and let younger guys get more PK work.

But Green is trying to win games here and the PK is part of the game.

I'm as annoyed about Carolina shitting the bed as you, but we have to win these games regardless. We can't lose to these inferior teams and we need to try to win 3 of 5 against the Leafs, Rags and Preds.

I don’t think Smith is playing particularly better than other defenseman on the PK.

I checked out some numbers since Feb 1 and he doesn’t stand out as being particularly great on the PK. I don’t think he has that reputation for his career. I think he’s living off a really good stretch early in the season.

Not that’s he’s playing badly on the PK but he’s not showing great ability the other defenseman aren’t similarly showing.

So to get decent PK minutes from 1 defenseman slot, the Devils have to eat bad 5 on 5 and penalty taking? Poor trade.

It’s the same story every time, but yes, Smith gets extra slack on his leash for his PK work.

If it’s me, I’m playing him at 4th like wing and sitting MacDermid.

I don't think the decision is as clear cut as we may think

If Allen faces less than 25 shots, I think you have to consider it. We need to win as many games as possible, especially the easier ones and games with higher playoff implications, and I think he still gives us the best chance.

I'd rather be on a 4 game winning streak and facing Toronto with Kahk/less rested Allen then to lose a stinker against NYI and still have to then face Toronto on the road.

Even with a rested Allen, that Toronto game will be very difficult. I'd take my chances with the team playing with confidence on a four game heater vs how they approach that game if they were to lose to the Isles.

Back in the day, we had a guy who was a huge Brett Seney fan. That guy was odd as nobody thought Seney had any potential outside of him.

At least Nico Daws still has some potential. Although I think Fitz may have thrown him into the fire too quickly. He may be a solid backup next year, but it seems clear that the Devils want to use Allen in the backup role and hunt for a starting goalie next year. I'm not sure if Fitz still sees a future in Daws with the Devils. I think Fitz feels some heat and knows he must act on goalie as soon a possible.
