So, who should we trade and who should we keep for next year? What can we expect to get in return? In the poll I didn't list guys who are part of the core (Duchene, Stone, Chabot, etc.), are hard to trade (Phaneuf, Ryan, Burrows) or who won't get us much in return (Dido, Dumont), but you can make a case for them in the comments!

Here's the return I'm aiming for :

- Pageau: a 2nd round pick
- Smith: a 3rd round pick
- Oduya: a 4th or 5th round pick
- Thompson: a 5th round pick (in retrospect I'm not sure he's going to get traded)

Am I off base? Overly optimistic or pessimistic?

Pageau can net you a first rounder easily

All I know is that I'll be furious if we trade Hoffman. Ya he's kinda lazy on the backcheck but dat shot is such a rare thing.

I love Smith... but he can go.
Oduy-obviously.
Torn on Pager. I'd keep him if possible.
Trade Phaneuf to LA for (insert literally anything here).

Of that list: Smith, Oduya, Thompson. I see everyone else as being part of the future, or too expensive to replace.

- Oduya is as good as gone. Should get a 4th-to-6th round pick in return for him.

- Burrows is gone for any expiring contract or conditional 7th round pick if you can find someone who wants to make that swap.

- Smith, as much as I love the guy's heart and dedication, is expendable. Don't trade him if there is no market for him, but definitely consider moving him out if you can get value back.

- Pageau can go if the deal is HELLA sweet. I wouldn't be shopping him around necessarily, but I'm listening to offers.

- Phaneuf, as long as we don't get stuck with an equally terrible or worse contract on a worse player with equal term (ie: trading him for Gaborik is counter-productive, short-sighted and stupid... not because Phaneuf is a great player or anything, but more because Gaborik is objectively terrible on a contract just as bad as Phaneuf's), or have to retain anything more than a small token percent of that contract, can go.

- Thompson, whatever. He can go. Stay. Don't really care. I'd rather give an older guy 4th line garbage minutes with defensive specialists than see a younger guy with potential waste away in that spot.

Shoot, forgot to put Brassard in the poll. I keep forgetting he's on our team.

edit: added him to the poll. If we can fetch a 1st rounder for him I'll take it and run.

I would not trade Hoffman. You can't find a 25-30 goal scorer for 5 or less. It would be more expensive to replace him on the open market. We'd have to pay 6-7 million to replace his production.

Definitely Smith, Oduya, Burrows (less likely)... Phaneuf and Ryan if we're living in lala-land. Maybe one of Claesson or Harpur added in a package to get something better. Would free up some space for other guys on D.

I would sell high on Pageau if the price is right. Trade Brass if the price is good, if not wait till next deadline.

We're in a bit of a funny situation because the worse we do this year, the more important it is to keep Hoffman for the optics of not giving up a high lottery pick next year.

I might move everyone else besides Karlsson.

Realistically:

Smith - mid tier propsect + pick (check what hanzal got last deadline)
pageau - 1st + good prospect or goalie prospect + 2nd
oduya - 6th
brassard - milano + 1st
ceci - no clue what you would get for the guy but take that deal

The only people I would keep are Stone, Erik (maybe, depends on contract ask), Chabot and the new guys obviously. I'd like to keep Duchene, but not at more than 5.0, not convinced on him.

For Erik I'd want the full buffet package. Say Tampa Bay wans him, Brayden Point, Sergachev, 1st in 2018, 1st in 2019, something along those lines.
For detritus like Burrows, anything.
For Borowiecki, I'd honestly take an end table and some free meals at the receiving team's decent eateries, just get him off the team so I don't have to hear from or see him again.
For Hoffman, I'd need a very high end prospect (Marner, Zadina, lower than Laine) and a pick.

Essentially, all I want is draft picks, futures, etc. If I can trade Phaneuf or Ryan, I'd ask The Euge if we can retain 3.0-4.0 on them, reminding him that we're getting young people that won't be paid much for a while.
Trade anyone that is older or unskilled for anything you can get, rebuild on the fly, sort of, and go from there.

Safe to say he can be written out of your lineup if that's your offer.

Voted for Smith, Oduya,, Pageau, Ceci, Thompson because I think they all have value without retention.

I'd also ship Ryan, Phaneuf, Burrows, Condon, and Anderson off for a bag of pucks, but I don't think any are movable.

And then th Sens tank next season and give Colorado a lottery pick?

Why would they do this?

Smith - prospect +pick
Oduya - 5th round pick
Thompson - late 2nd or 3rd round pick
Ceci - prospect with top 6 F or top 4 D upside + 2nd round pick
Brassard - Jarry + Sprong + 2nd round pick

Extra: Trade Anderson at the deadline to a contender who loses their starter or really needs help. Get back a 2nd round pick.

Start next year with:

Hoffman - Duchene - Ryan
Dzingel - Brown - Stone
Chlapik - Pageau - White
Pyatt - Paul - Sprong
McCormick

Chabot - Karlsson
Phaneuf - Jaros
Claesson/Boro - Wideman
Boro/Claesson

Jarry
Condon

Go with a young, fast roster. If Sprong looks ready to contribute move Ryan (with salary retained if necessary) and move White into his spot and move Sprong up to the Pageau line.
