Oh I see why you are so confused. Dubas fixed nothing.

Let me give you an example - sign RFA Marner to $11M contract . Fix? Left organization. We can go on and talk about other mistakes. His fix is always the same, he run away.

Please stop with this cringe narrative. Dubas overpaid for Marner, JT, Nylander. Dubas traded away picks for nothing. Dubas is the sole reason we have depth issues.

Dubas is the reason why we have no picks and no cap space.

Dubas is the reason why Tre or any other GM can't fix our depth issues. You need cap space and/or picks to address it.

Kyle fked us, left us with overpaid players and no picks.

It doesn't matter who the GM is for the next 5 years. He/she can only wait for picks and ludicrous contracts to expire. 0 wiggle room left by Kyle Dubas.

Edit: He can fix one mistake and trade for Marner. That would help a lot !

You say this as if Treliving didn’t sign Huberdeau for 10.5 million, that’s far worse than any long term contract Dubas gave out. Same with the Kadri deal. He also had over 15 million in cap space to work with and didn’t really do so well with it did he. It’s a complete myth that there isn’t enough cap space to fill out our roster and also the cap was expected to rise more than it did before COVID when he first made those deals. If he had’ve actually signed players that were worth close to 15 million in cap instead of utter garbage then this team would arguably be the best in the league. People think Marner is overpaid at 11 million and Treliving signed Kampf and Reaves long term for 4 million combined. We’re just lucky every other player he signed was only a 1 year deal and Reaves can be buried but so far he has shown he has no idea what he’s doing and that goes back to the last few deals he made in Calgary.

Tre discussions/evaluations are premature.

I don't really care what he did in a completely different situation. Why would anyone care ? Or do you think Calgary = Toronto with Matthews on ELC , Marner on ELC, Kadri, draft picks and cap space.

Even if I wanted to pretend it's comparable (and I really don't want to), I'd have to say s*cks for Calgary, glad he learned elsewhere instead of getting expensive experience and sporting fake glasses here.

Why are people still hung up with Dubas? He is gone. He is also someone who got us 1 Playoffs series WIN in the past 5 yrs as GM. Despite having Hart and Rocket winner on the team. One might argue highest IQ player in the League. The biggest UFA signing in the Cap area.

There is only so many ways to say this: The Leafs don't have any 'awful' contracts in their top 4, but they don't have any great ones either. That just about guarantees them to be 'good' but makes it very hard to be great.

The current top 5 teams in the league:

Boston: Top 4 scorers have scored 89 goals, get paid $24.9m, leaving about 70 percent of the cap for "depth"

Vancouver: Top 4 scorers have 92 goals, make $23.1m, leaving about 72 percent for depth.

Winnipeg: Top 4 scorers only have 62 goals, get paid $21.1 leaving almost 74 percent for depth.

Colorado: Top 4 scorers have 94 goals, making about $28m, leaving about 66 percent of the cap for depth.

Florida: Top 4 scorers have 88 goals, make about $24.7m, leaving about 70 percent of the cap for further depth.

The Leafs? Top 4 guys have 97 goals (more but not a LOT more than all the above teams except for Winnipeg. But, make $40.4m (next year $46.7m) leaving only about 51 percent of the cap for depth. (next year they will have less than 50 percent for depth likely).

You spend 50 percent of the cap on 4 forwards, they need to be blowing away the rest of the league in terms of goals. an extra goal every 4 games compared to some of the production of the other top teams doesn't cut it, when you are paying so much more.
