This is where I am at. Trade the pick for someone 23-25 preferably a top 4 defender of a 2C

There are 13 Centers in the NHL between 23-25 with 0.5 pts/game or better:

1. Patrik LaineLogo of the Columbus Blue JacketsCBJ25C, RW, LWRight186390.50-10410.1515:13-----M-NTCUFA$8,700,000$9,100,000

I still think we buy out Skinner in 2025, and not 2024. But. If we do buyout this off season, it would be to free up money for a legit 3C/2C type.

Danault+Turcotte+4th for Krebs+Rosen+2nd

Kulich - TT - Tuch
Quinn - Cozens - Peterka
Benson - Danault - Savoie
Greenway - Tucotte - Boyd

I’ve always been a big Danault fan but I am not sure I would like to move Rosen for him. The upside is pretty high on Rosen and I would rather hold him and see what he turns into then trade him for Danault and his cap hit. We will have to pay Quinn, Peterka, and Byram before Danualts deal is up.

Turcotte just seems like another “meh hasn’t figured It out yet” player much like Krebs. I personally would not want him or Krebs in the lineup going forward as we would benefit from obtaining some most physical and defensive forwards on the 4th line to bring in a new energy in our forward group.

Fair points. Are you more bullish on Rosen or Kulich? I guess sinse Kulich is a possible center I'd rather he stick around as than Rosen. I think one of Quinn/Peterka/Benson/Savoie/Kulich has to go in order for Rosen to get a shot on the roster.

With Turcotte, he is a true center with talent, not overlooking his flaws. He's got a better head on his shoulders than Krebs, even with all the concussions.

I dont see any real-mccoys out there for the ideal 4Cs. Like Jack McBain. Why would Arizona trade him?

Would be willing to overpay to get two of these four from Philly
Cates/Foerster/Frost/Hathaway
But why would Philly trade any of them

Armia on a contract year as 4RW? Sure. Evans or Dvorak as 4C? Sure. Maybe. All overpaid. I like Kovacevic as a 7D option. Maybe there's a trade with MTL.

Girgensons as 4C? Travis Boyd is a decent option.

I don't see Adams buying out Skinner with one year left on his contract, and nor do I think we should do that, especially with our current cap situation (I also don't see Buffalo changing much in their policy regarding their internal budget).

I think Joki will be taking a short term deal this offseason, and I think he's gone by the time the 2025 season rolls around. I would expect Johnson to take Joki's spot in the lineup. With a budget like team, and the process that Adams seems to have with his roster, I would estimate that Krebs would be a mainstay as a 3rd line Center on the team. Krebs is younger than Danault, and most likely would be the cheaper option.

I could see Adams looking for guys LIKE Turcotte, younger, but still potential to try and build with, but not sure Turcotte would be a guy he likes.

Rosen I think would be at a point in 2025 season to be fighting for a top 6/9 spot and someone that you would want to pencil in for when one of Peterka/Quinn hopefully graduates to a top line role with Skinner gone. Kulich would be in the same boat as well. Savoie, he would be a guy that by 2025, I'd want him being the main guy for Rochester on their top line hoping to be the 1st call up option.

I could see Greenway leaving for free agency at the end of 2024 season, and I would hope one of Girgensons or Sabres moves on from one another.

Which of these are you going to get for the pick?
Its interesting how literal you take it. That you cant trade the pick for someone who is 26? Or add to the pick?
Here is a box! Make it fit!

Not that I want to trade for him but I don't see Zegras on your list? Does the player have to be on your list that I pick?

Also doesn't Laine play wing? You need a better list.

Also I said or a top 4 defender. Where is that list?

You built the box, don't complain about it, you want a different one build it.

Zegras isn't one the list because he's below 0.5 pts/game this year.

Laine was CBJ's 1C before he got hurt.

You know, for all those cavets you never actually said which of those players you think you could get for the pick.

Here's the defender list, I took a very broad view of what Top 4 D meant (0.3pt/g & 18+min/game). 15 Options:

To be fair you limited the field to players with your preferred attributes. Age, 23 -25, ppg etc. I think widening the age bracket to 29 and under is a more accurate look at what might be available. Fwiw, I do not believe mgmt alters course and trades the pick.

Man I'm not trying to be a jerk but I just disagree with some of the projections and then ultimately the decision making. I really think Savoie makes the team out of camp considering he looked like it he was going to last year.

I think the internal budget thing is overstated. They'll be pushing the cap and if they have success will continue to do so. Just my opinion but I think it's based more on not wanting to push the cap while the team is a basement dweller.

I do agree that it won't be kulich on the top line. A healthy Quinn is a much better option for the near future. Or it could be that I don't have a clue about any of this.

If you want to take it literally then where did I say it has to be a .5 point per game player? You just make that part up. So you need to post every single center in the NHL within that age bracket then get back to me. Also you are posting players who are on the sabres or who aren't centers. Laine was never a center, he plays left wing. How do you trade for a player already on Buffalo? Also where did I say he has to be a .5 player only this year? I never built that box you did.

You want to take my perimeters literally then do it right not add your own perimeters, players who aren't even centers and players who are already on the team.

Zegras is a perfect example that is rumored to be available who would be a capable 2C/3C yet he isn't even on your list because of the perimeters YOU ADDED.

If I would have posted trade the pick for a center PERIOD. then you would be ok with it? Just make the perimeters invisible or really broad next time for you? Will that work?

I would like to trade the 1st round pick + for a Center+

Let me know if that works? Then next time I post you will be happy with it.

Also am I allowed to revise my proposal or once its posted its fixed and thats it?

Let me know the rules of the game you are playing so next time you will be happy. Thanks!

I don't think you're coming off in anyway as a jerk. Nothing wrong with disagreeing.

I'm usually bad at this part of the whole who can be sent where contracts/restrictions, but I think Matt was looking at WHL or Sabres BECAUSE he couldn't be sent to the AHL (Please those with more knowledge correct me if I'm wrong). I think Benson showed a more readiness for the NHL game than Matt, and I still wanted Benson to still be in the juniors because I felt he wasn't playing at a level that should've kept him here (IMO).

I do think that there is an internal budget at hand, BECAUSE the rest of the organization that doesn't have limitations on what you can spend/invest into it, is handled with financial constraints it seems.

That's not to say that they won't make moves, but they will probably will not want to make decisions that have far reaching impacts, for example, like having any "dead" money on their books, like buying out Skinner in 2025 season. It's probably why they go for easily movable contracts, or contracts that don't have much restrictions to them (See NTC, or NMC contracts). I also think they are of the mindset of being as competitive as possible for as financially conservative as possible. I don't think that they will push to the cap, even at their highest competitive level.

I'm not sure where people are getting that Savoie was going to make the team this year. He only played in prospect tournament...and then was hurt.

To be fair you limited the field to players with your preferred attributes. Age, 23 -25, ppg etc. I think widening the age bracket to 29 and under is a more accurate look at what might be available. Fwiw, I do not believe mgmt alters course and trades the pick.

The original post specified age 23-25 & Top 4 D or 2C. 43 players 29 or younger 0.5ppg

That's fine if you don't like 0.5 ppg. What criteria did you intend 2C to convey?

There's a really broad level of effort between 'trade the pick for a center (or even 2C or 3C)' and going and seeing who actually exists in the league. Trading a top 10 pick for a 3C is a terrible idea which should be dismissed out of hand by the team and fans alike. Trading it for a 2C is a potentially good idea but again, you need to see who's out there.

I think it's obvious you need to revise your proposal.

There are 13 Centers in the NHL between 23-25 with 0.5 pts/game or better:

Which of these are you going to get for the pick?

Interesting list. Clearly some will not be available at all, one may never play again in Chytil, two have other injury issues in Norris and Laine, and two were just acquired in Newhook and Sharongoalvich (who has also done most of his damage on the wing). That brings it down to

Pinto - on a cheap deal, probably better value for the Sens than Norris who they would probably rather part with if they part with one.
Norris - bad shoulders and a high price tag. Buyer beware.
Geekie - a journeyman who found a home in the holes in the Bruins roster.
Frost - someone who was on the outs with the coach and may have been available a year ago.

Of them all in your list, Frost seems like the intersection of talent/production, age, and maybe availability. Now, would the Flyers do it or no? I would lean toward no.

Appreciate the effort in pulling the charts.

Go look at Point's accent to the NHL. Then compare to where Savoie it right now.

That isn't going to tell me anything either.

So far we have 3 minutes and change to tell us how far along he is in handling NHL competition and minutes.

Point's 3 post draft years:

2014-15
Syracuse Crunch AHL 9g 2-2-4
Moose Jaw Warriors WHL 60g 38-49-87
Canada U20 WJC-20 7 2 2 4 6 4 |

2015-16
Moose Jaw Warriors WHL 48g 35-53-88
Canada U20 WJC-20 5g 1-4-5

2016-17 Logo of the
Tampa Bay Lightning NHL 68g 18-22-40

Savoie's 2 post-draft years:

2022-23
Winnipeg Ice WHL 62g 38-57-95 | PLAYOFFS 19g 11-18-29

2023-24
Rochester Americans AHL 6g 2-3-5
Wenatchee Wild WHL 11g 11-13-24
Moose Jaw Warriors WHL 23g 19-28-47 | PLAYOFFS 2g 2-1-3
Canada U20 WJC-20 4g 0-1-1

Savoie almost made the team out of camp, but got hurt. He didn't get sent down because he wasn't ready, but because he didn't really have a great spot of the Sabres for development. He'll be on the roster next season.
