We use Kadri for that role, and that isn't Vilardi's game at all. He's a poor-man's Matthews or Tavares who doesn't have the skating to play center most likely. He's also not really a shut down guy. His game is built around great hands and strength on the puck which allows him to be strong along the boards and drive the net.
The best defense is the best offense. Vilardi isn't couturier, but he definitely plays in all three zones. When Couts was drafted I wasn't exactly thinking he would be a selke quality defensive forward, but Vilardi could end up being a guy like that. If he ends up at the wing he could become a poor mans Marian Hossa. That would also be quite the addition to the Leafs.
