Gotta weigh the risks. Considering Rielly was injured for most of last year, I see no reason to bring him to the NHL. This year is his 1st full year playing as a #1 D in the WHL. Lets weigh the pros and cons
Pros:
- Umm. Literally can't think of any. Will it help his development? I think at best it would be neutral towards his development. Will he single handedly make this team a playoff team? No.
Cons:
- It can ruin his confidence
- It can prevent him from polishing off his game. He some some defensive liabilities. It would be MUCH easier for him to adjust and fix that at the Junior level, then to try and adjust on the fly in the best league in the world. Why not let him improve and prove himself at Junior before rushing him to the NHL?
- It burns a year off his ELC during a shortened season and also while the team isn't good and won't win anything
Would bringing him up 100% for sure ruin him? No, not at all. But there is risk to it. There's no risk to leaving him in junior for the year.
Carlyle sounds like he's been reading Burke's sound bites.

They are in the entertainment industry. Is there anybody in any kind of sports or entertainment industriy that doesn't make statements like that about fans?

-We are where we are.
-Same level of game but higher accountability and higher conditioning left and that's how we ended our season for the future
-Mental part will be a bit different, nothing like getting out there and getting a high level, no matter what happens in practice and scrimmage.
-under 30 players for the camp, who knows might be 40?
-Guys in toronto marlies have been kept a good look for, possibility even if its a 6-7 day look.
-ranger is on an AHL contract so we can't access him yet, but he might have potential?
-doesn't have to answer to 50 cameras in anaheim, prolly around 4 there, and therefore much more scrutiny over here than there.
-short season so impact must be made early as possible.
-backs up the goalies, believing their are NHL capable, and can help them if we implement a good defensive system.
-haven't had a chance to meet the coaching staff but will do so in the afternoon, will discuss for our direction.
-conditioning was the main thing that was told at the end of last season and hopefully we'll find out as soon as possible who's ready and who's not.
-rielly is an elite junior player but it depends on what happens, isn't afraid to put an 18 year in the team but will check out which best represents the toronto maple leafs
-gards has off-ice workouts and will re-evaluate later on for on-ice workouts.
-hasn't seen the marlies in the last 2 weeks, was out for the xmas break. sees a lot of positives. eakins has done a good job to get them to the point where it is.
-expects the team to play a high pace, high tempo and make it intense as possible, not a stanley cup team tempo but the best they can do.
-we'll do as much as possible to keep a healthy hockey club and conditioning will help us with that, if there is such a problem then we will make sure our staffs gets them extra time and workout.
-both mcleements and komarov are steady players and glad euro playing north american game.
-the coaches will try to formulate soon after they meet up.
-JVR will start out on the wing, doesn't know how long he'll be there. However sees a possibility to play him in the center if we need him there.
-there is always a pressure for a coach to make the playoffs, no matter what and lots of pressure applied in the NHL. as well in our organization.
-we are going try to provide an environment so we can compete for the stanley cup playoffs.
-we'll have most our players in town by wednesday if they aren't here.
-conversation between the management, coach and players has been none due to the lockout.
-dunno when it will be lifted however our players are already in the mastercard center still playing together and renting the place out, it could be possibly lifted during this conference itself.
-coaches expect to get in shooting lanes, going to make it as difficult for the opposition to get shots and put our players in the shot blocking lanes
-would be foolish to state lupul and kessel won't be playing together, that's etched in stone only.
-would be wise to have extra players early, incase of the injury.
-fans have been patient here and they were losing patience. expect us to perform at the highest level and if we perform then we will win our fans back.

It wasn't a criticism, just an observation.
Watch the press conference; it certainly seems like Carlyle has been to the Brian Burke School of Public Relations.

I'd like to see him get a few games in the NHL before he goes back to junior, I think it'll be good for him get a taste of what the pace is like in the NHL.
An NHL camp and a game or two would be a good experience for him, and if his play at this level is strong enough, then he stays.
Yeah, I still have it going on wondering if someone else is going to come to talk. Everyone taking their microphone should be a clue for me though....

How's Cam Fowlers defensive play? Might have been better if he'd had another year to hone that part of his game in Junior.

Lol @ Carlyle's comments about player conditioning.
I'm not saying that he's lying, because maybe it is actually true, and they had poor conditioning under Wilson... But I seem to recall Maurice saying that when he took over from Quinn, and Wilson saying that when he took over from Maurice. Pretty sure most coaches say that when they come into a new team.
