U.S. team would be interesting to project as there are several guys between the ages of 28-32 that would still be a possibility. Here's my stab (no really pairings or lines):

Goaltenders (x3):

Jonathan Quick
Cory Schneider
John Gibson

Defensemen (x8):

Ryan Suter/Justin Faulk
Ryan McDonagh/Cam Fowler
Erik Johnson/Seth Jones
John Carlson/Kevin Shattenkirk

Forwards (x14):

Kane-Stepan-Saad
Parise-Galchenyuk-Ryan
Kessel-Backes-JVR
Callahan-Pavelski-Oshie
Pacioretty-Bjugstad

It's a long shot.. Vrbata and Erat will be 36 by that time. Hemský is injury-prone, Fleischmann will have a hard time being in this years olympics (actually we can say the same about all of these players, except for Hudler I guess).
Anyway I hope JaÅ¡kin, Pastrňák, Vrána and other prospects will pan out so we won't need them :)

If the NHL players participate:

bolded the players I believe would be there for sure.

MacKinnon - Crosby - Stamkos
Duchene - McDavid - Tavares
Benn - Nugent-Hopkins - Drouin
Hall - Toews - Giroux
Eberle
Reinhart

Seguin, Huberdeau, Toffoli, Couture, Getzlaf, O'Reilly, Monahan, Hodgson, E.Staal, R.Johansen ....

Subban - Pietrangelo
Keith - Doughty
Rielly - Weber
Letang
Murray, Vlasic, Alzner, Hamilton, M.Staal, Hamonic, Murphy, Ouellet, Schultz, Herrington ...

Bernier, Price, Fleury (he might finally win the SC again with fantastic numbers ;)), Holtby, Crawford, M.Subban, Smith, ... goaltending is hard, everything may change in 4 years. But I believe that Price and Bernier should be good enough by the time.

Coaching stuff: Roy, Babcock, Queneville, Julien

I can't really disagree except to say Charlie Coyle, Jake Trouba and maybe, just possibly, Chris Kreider.

I have a strong feeling we're going to laugh at these lineups in 4 years:laugh: So many young guys coming up, Kylington should have a couple of seasons in the NHL by then, ridiculous talent.

Keith Doughty
Vlasic Pietrangelo
Alzner Subban
Hamonic Rielly

Price
Bernier
Holtby

Hard team to predict, as the days of the 2003 draft players should be passed by 2014. The forward group should be extremely fast and will probably be missing out on some veteran experience, but there is an inevitable passing of the guard. Hard to project guys like Drouin or McDavid before they really play in the NHL, and you have to remember that by the 2018 Olympics McDavid will only be halfway through his second NHL season. I see Canada rolling four lines and outskating teams. Also, it seems like a much more balanced forward group in that many of the players will ave had a fair amount of experience on the wing.

Defence is hard to predict outside of Keith, Doughty and Pietrangelo. I expect Vlasic to make it in 2014, and no reason to think he won't be a better player in 2018. Subban makes it, and after that it's difficult to project. I like Alzner's game, and just took random guesses on Hamonic (physical defensive role) and Rielly. I don't like Weber's game for the big ice once he moves into his thirties.

Goaltending is obviously Price plus some other guys. Why not Bernier and Holtby...

Teräväinen-Barkov-Armia
Granlund-Saarela(?)-Lehkonen
Filppula-M.Koivu-Hartikainen
Grinder with size and speed times three

Ristolainen-Määttä
Vatanen-Pokka
Pitkänen-Hakanpää

Three best goalies in the world.

At least the first line would be able to score 5 goals per night any time of the year. Finland will be much better on paper in 2018 than in Sotschi.

It'll be far more likely we see more 80-borns than just Koivu and Filppula (like J.Jokinen, Kontiola, Korpikoski and Ruutu) rather than have every potential 90-born in there. They'll be only around 35, after all.

My lineup above has Selänne as an obvious joke - but if you replace him with, say, J.Jokinen, I believe it'll be pretty close to the mark.

We're getting gradually better, but trusting that every top prospect hits the cap of their potential is veering on the side of unwarranted optimism. Some will be busts, and some of them will get there, but it's going to take a while longer.

A case in point: Take a gander at similar predictions made in 2009-2010 concerning the Sochi squad. Most of us had Pulkkinen and Rajala in there.

At the moment I would have Korpikoski and perhaps Ruutu as possible options for bottom 6 roles. Perhaps Komarov could still be a very good 4th liner.

Frankly we are getting more of our 90-generetion players to Sotschi than for example I predicted. Barkov and Granlund are or at least should be locks for the forward squad and Vatanen and Määttä should be in the team too. If the Olympics were played in 2015 then Armia and Teräväinen would have all the chances already that soon. The change has been fast.
