Was at the game.

As pointed out, game was definitely sloppy but had its high points.

Guys that stood out that were unsurprising:
-Pinto
-JBD
-Soogard
-Greig

Surprises:
-Thomson
-Daoust
-Kastelic

I thought Thomson played a good game positionally, nothing fancy but his passes are super crisp, and his shot is NHL quality, even if I didn’t get to see a clap-bomb.

No idea why Thomson being decent is a surprise … wait to you see LT and JBD on the same ice.

For those who missed the game (from best to worst):

FORWARDS

1. Zack Ostapchuk
Great player. Big, fast, heavy shot with obvious scoring instincts yet, no cheating on the defensive end of the game. Speaking of which, he started out on the fourth line, then got elevated to the third, to finally be on the ice in the last minute of the final period. Strong Dubois/Hertl vibes here. A potential diamond in the rough.

2. Mark Kastelic
Big, strong as an ox & fast enough to keep up. Stellar defensive instincts, money in the faceoff dot and hands that can pot some goals. He could be an ideal bottom 6 player once the big team’s contention window opens in a few years.

3. Angus Crookshank
Ohh he’s a feisty one. Guaranteed NHL player here. You just have to wonder how effective he’ll be at the next level given his size, but everything else is absolutely there. The Brendan Gallagher comparisons are legitimate. Congratulations to Trent Mann and the amateur scouting staff (again).

4. Carson Latimer
Really, really like this player. By far my favorite pick from last year’s draft. The best thing for his game would probably be to slow down a little bit. He’s a Connor Brown on steroids, always going at 100 miles per hour. There is absolutely no cheating in his game. Very strong defensive instincts. He’s often the first forward back in his zone and he supports his defensemen like a center. While he doesn’t have elite offensive skills, he’s more than capable of scoring and/or setting up teammates. Just a tremendous two way player.

5. Cole Reinhardt
One of the most experienced players on the ice today and it showed. Very good outing for him.

6. Matthew Wedman
See above: Reinhardt, Cole.

7. Philippe Daoust
Clearly gifted when it comes to hands and vision. Just a tad slow and indecisive at 5 vs 5 for me.

8. Ridly Greig
Surprisingly timid throughout the game. He still looks a bit frail to effectively play the way he does at the professional level.

9. Roby Jarventie
A couple of flashes of the elite skills package he possesses, but the whole thing hasn’t come together yet.

10. Shane Pinto
Perhaps he didn't want to get injured and saved himself for the main camp, but today simply wasn’t it.

11. Egor Sokolov
Couldn’t keep pace. Expectations are sky high, so hopefully, this was just a one off for the big guy finding his legs.

12. Ben Allison
Just didn’t like his game today, but absolutely looking forward to see how he does Monday.

DEFENSEMEN

1. Maxence Guenette
Had to do a double take and rewind when he came flying in the neutral zone with the puck on his stick on his first shift. And that shift set the tone for the rest of the game. He was outstanding at both ends of the ice. The training regiment he followed this summer clearly worked cause at this point, his skating is a sight to behold and that skill allows him to be effective everywhere on the ice.

2. Ben Roger
First training camp? Check. Barely played a dozen of games last season? Check. Yet, you couldn’t tell watching him today. He looked like a 10 years vet in his own zone and surprised a few times by pinching beautifully and playing the puck deep in the opposition’s zone. Add a good, accurate shot to an already enticing package of size, skating and two way play and you’ve got an extremely, extremely interesting prospect.

3. JBD
He played great. Steady all evening long, calm as always under pressure and some gorgeous patience/toe drags at the offensive blueline. Two issues though: 1. he still gets down on his knees way too early and way too often while defending the crease. 2. He couldn’t settle/mesh with his partner at all despite being a veteran in this tournament (admittedly more on the partner than him, but still...).

4. Lassi Thomson
It almost feels wrong to have Lassi down here as the 4th best defender in the game because he was really good. One small mistake holding the offensive blueline here and another defending 1 vs 1 there, but really, that’s nitpicking. This is a player that has taken a massive step forward. Crisp passes, accurate shot, solid defending and it goes on. He can legitimately be looked at as an offensive minded, potential top 4 NHL defenseman again.

5. Xavier Bernard
Never heard of the guy before this game and he didn’t misrepresent himself at all. Thought he was good throughout the game. Nothing spectacular, just steady and solid all around.

6. Chandler Romeo
Started the game on the top pair alongside JBD and frankly looked out of place at this level. He got better as the game went on, but I counted zero tape to tape passes and several plays where he simply panicked under the slightest pressure. With that being said, it’s hard to hold anything against him in the first game of his first training camp. He’s extremely young and has nice tools (skating, size, reach), but will need to work hard to round out his game. Fun long term project for sure though!

I did miss the game, so thanks for this.

Really glad to hear good things about Greig, Guennette and Crookshank. I see those guys as legit NHL shots.

I thought JBD was the most NHL ready player for the Sens. So calm and cool with the puck.

Almost all of the other top ranked prospects had flashes of very good play, but didn’t have the “wow” factor for the entire game. No one really, truly disappointed though.

Overall I was happy with the Sens play, lots of good skating and puck movement.
