Flyers fan here - What are the Preds' needs?
Saw a post earlier around an Ellis for Sanheim deal, and a rumor earlier about Arvidsson, and thought of a potential shake up deal for Philly but still beneficial but not entirely sure if it fits Nashville.
To Phi:
Ellis - $6.75M x 6 years - 30 years old
Arvidsson - 4.25M x 3 years - 27 years old
To Nsh:
Voracek - 8.25M x 3 years - 30 years old
Sanheim - 3.25M x 1 year (RFA) - 25 years old. Probably hasn't earned much of a raise (maybe around $4M) but has top pair upside.
Adjust with picks and lower tiered assets.
The Flyers reasons for trading the above two: Shake-up trade (Voracek is a leader and still a productive, puck possession monster who has lapses defensively that enough of the team has). Has 29 points in 33 games. Sanheim hasn't quite put it together yet, but is a tall, lanky, fluid skating defenseman that can play both sides but is prone to soft play. Ghost has played better this year as well and is a smaller but similar in a role compared to Sanheim.
The Flyers needs for acquiring the above two: They need a leader type top pair, RH shot D-man to play with Provorov, and a shoot-first winger. Flyers have several "pass first players" (Couts, Giroux, Hayes, Patrick) and they simply don't shoot enough. Arvidsson has regressed but hopefully we can pick it up with the number of playmakers on the team. This also saves the Flyers from their expansion problem because they would just protect Myers, Provorov and Ellis, and leave Ghost exposed as normal.
Here's my attempt at Nashville rationale, but I don't know the team well so feel free to educate me.
Nashville reasons for trading the two: Shake up deal with the d-corp. I feel Ellis is the most expendable, and the team can push for more offensive help. Team can build around Josi and Ekholm, and have a potential replacement in Sanheim at a lower cost who can grow.
Nashville reasons for acquiring the above two: Voracek is a consistent .8-.9 PPG player and would excel with a player like Forsberg. He can hit PPG in the right chemistry, and is a puck carrier and protector and line driver and can perhaps re-vitalize one of Duchene or Johanssen with his great passing ability. Sanheim isn't as good as Ellis, but can serve in a top4 role for now but has top pair potential. Good, solid asset.
Salaries match out. Top line winger for top pair defenseman, with the upside assets tilted in benefit of the winger versus the d-man (i.e., Sanheim > Arvidsson, Ellis > Voracek). Pure hockey trade if the value can be aligned.
