The problem isn't McDonagh. When you put that much onus on the point man to create everything from up high with a PKer on him, Jesus Christ can't make it work. If we put Karlsson in McDonagh's position with our PP, he would look above average at best.

mcdonagh doesnt have the offensive ability that a pp point man needs.
he skates beautifully, carries the mail, and he's smart, but his offense isnt instinctive. he doesn't make the right reads, passes, take the right shots, heck he's rarely ever in the right place most of the time.
his shot is average at best or below, he's not the most skilled at taking one timers and prefers to tee the puck up and he still misses the net after taking way too much time to deliver.
as long as 27 is the pp point man, the pp will suck. period.
