We really need to sign this kid.

Benning is a complete disaster, but you have to give credit when it's due. His drafting outside of the 1st round has been good

You know, this is what convinces me that when it comes to the running of the Canucks, there has to be somebody else pulling the marionette strings besides Benning.

The guy has been money with later round picks, yet has traded away a bushel full of 'em in a vain attempt to acquire early-20 buts like Etem, Vey and Pedan; and flawed veterans like, Dorsett, Prust, Sutter and Gudbranson.

Jimbo says he 'hates' trading picks, but does it anyway....who's to say how many Gaudettes, Tryamkins, Demko's, Brisebois' or Lockwoods he might have uncovered, if he'd just held on to all those picks.

After all, the Canucks today are a 28th place team as they were last season, and all those blown picks haven't made one iota of difference anyway.

Our drafting from the US has been great under multiple regimes now, from Nonis to Gillis to Benning.

Our Euro drafting has been hit and miss but Gradin has found some gems before.

Our drafting from Canada, particularly western Canada, has not been good and Benning has not seemed to have improved that one iota thus far. If anything, Benning has given our West. Canada scouts more picks than did Gillis who seemed to have given up on them.

This is not a video game where one guy at the controller makes all the picks. There is a massive group of people involved in drafting. Benning is responsible for forming that group and providing the direction but it will take years to determine if he did well or not.

Saying he picked Forsling or he picked Stewart is just overly simplistic and not likely to yield any relevant evaluation of anything.

Canucks are most likely going to be a 28th place team..but there is a difference from last year..There are players like Stecher,Try,and Horvat on the ascendant of great things..Instead of replacement players like Bartkowski, who we had last year.

Great drafting from U.S. under Gillis? Not sure Getting Hutton over 6 years of drafts equals great? What other prospects Kevin C or Shroeder? Nonis had some great early success then two horrendous drafts.

Since 2003 here are the players who have at least become fringe players and where they are drafted from

Kesler (NCAA)
Schneider (NCAA)
Edler (Sweden)
Brown (NCAA)
Hansen (Sweden)
Raymond (AJHL)
Grabner (WHL)
Hodgson (OHL)
Schroeder (NCAA)
Connauton (NCAA)
Hutton (NCAA)
Horvat (OHL)
Gaunce (OHL)

... and then the recent guys who are too fresh.

Maybe I shouldn't have said it's been "great" but it's clearly been an organizational strength relative to other leagues. Guys like Connauton and Schroeder are at least borderline NHLers and Mike Brown has quietly had a solid career. There's also McNally who is a late bloomer and looking okay in the AHL this year.

If you go back even further, the only players taken from 2000-2002 who had a career were both from the US: Umberger and Bieksa. The only player from 2002 to play any NHL games at all was Brett Skinner, also from the USHL.

I hate the overly simplistic way that posters attribute drafts to GM's. As I said it's clear that we've been better at scouting from the USA then other countries for some time now. And now we have Demko, Gaudette, Lockwood, Boeser to add to that list.

Our scouting from the WHL continues to be a joke but notice how under Gillis we pretty much just ignored that region whereas Benning has tried to give those scouts a voice again.

2008: Rai
2009: 0 WHL picks
2010: 0 WHL picks
2011: 0 WHL picks
2012: 0 WHL picks
2013: Shinkaruk
2014: Virtanen, Stewart
2015: Olson
2016: Stukel, Abols

We'll see how it goes.

Tanev was pretty much a Gagner suggestion and Gagner was a Gillis signing so he gets full credit.

If I remember correctly, Gagner saw his name on a roster and told them to go scout him. They sent some guys out to see him, and then made the suggestion to Gillis. Obviously Gagner got the ball rolling, and likely had a hand in convincing Tanev to sign with the Canucks, but it's unlikely they sign him just based on Gagner having coached him in Peewee or Bantam or whatever.

McGuire: Boeser ready to step in, Gaudette might be steal of 2015 draft

Pierre McGuire has high praise for Brock Boeser and Adam Gaudette, suggesting Boeser is ready to score 15-20 goals next year and Gaudette may be the steal of the 2015 draft. McGuire is excited by Gaudette’s ability to explode with the puck and attack the net, and Boeser has similar skills. Pierre still thinks Gaudette needs another year of college hockey

Seriously? You're arguing with me over Gagner's role in the Tanev signing? Gagner could have been his coach for 10 years and be the Canucks' assistant GM and you can make the same arguments.

Gagner highly recommended Tanev. He got Smyl and the scouts to check Tanev out and saw why Gagner was so high on him. They brought tape back to Gillis to watch and he saw why Gagner was so high on him. But ya it's unlikely they sign Tanev just based on Gagner's recommendation alone.

One last faceoff after time-out. Nothing doing. Boston University wins. Northeastern's season is over. The Zach Aston-Reese sweepstakes are on.

I'd like him to sign. Would love the Utica team to make a run next year or even a Cinderella run this year.

There was a recent interview linked somewhere on here where him and Canucks management agreed that he needs another year in college before he's physically ready to turn pro so he'll be back at Northeastern for his Jr season.
