It’s like some people are livid that this trade is a win-win.
This is a solid trade so can't imagine why anyone can complain. GMs are not really interested in fleecing each other. You want last in the business screwing folks in your circle of friends.

3rd pick for a solid second liner on an ok contract - Smith turns into Barbashev. win win

Trade fits Dubas MO to a tee, trading draft capital in this case a 3rd rd pick to take on 5M in cap space. While other GM's are getting draft picks for taking on 5M in salary in a cap strapped league.
As a general rule, this hasn't been true.
Chicago didn't receive anything for taking on $6M Taylor Hall for two years.
Colorado didn't receive anything for taking on $4M Ryan Johansen for two years.
St. Louis traded a 6th to take on $3.571M Kevin Hayes for three years.
Arizona traded a 2nd to take on $1.7M Sean Durzi.
New Jersey traded a 3rd (and an RFA) to take on $4.25M Tyler Toffoli.
The only recent case where a GM received a pick to take on salary was Chicago when they took on $5M Brock Nelson for a year. Who, they intend to buy out.

Good pickup for the Pens. At 5mil for two years, Smith is a very versatile winger who can still play solid in the middle six and is an underrated forechecker and pk guy.

We got a guy who put up 56 points and is a good player for a future 3rd. Please let me know what better play could've been had for that price?
Could’ve potentially gotten a better or similar player in UFA without giving up any assets. Or spent a bit more in a trade for a guy who won’t be 33-34 years old for the next 2 playoffs.
