Scottsdale, AZ.

They can`t fire Chayka because his replacement would cost more than the entry level salary AB is paying the boy wunderkind. Similar to the roster the GM is on an ELC as well. Remember, the overriding theme in the Barroway ownership is spend as little money as possible in all facets of the organization. This includes paying your coach and GM as little as possible. Say what you want, there can be a relationship between payroll/admin and winning. Is there one here? I believe it is part of the issue, yet, it is not spoken of, maybe it should be?

I saw Glendale is one of the 238 cities/regions that bid for Amazon's HQ2. I'm curious if Glendale was to win (and to be clear I think the chances are slim and none and slim just left town) would that make the Coyotes want to stay in Glendale with 50K jobs drop on their doorstep.

No, it really wouldnt matter at all. The bridges burned, foundations blown up.

I don't think the Yotes are long for AZ but on the 1 in 1,000,000 chance Amazon picked Glendale I think that would be a game changer.

Why? The only possible outcome is Amazon being a corporate sponsor somehow, or possibly having a suite or seats for the season. This is why the team being in Glendale is terrible. The corporate dollars are not in Glendale and out west for 41 games a year. It happens, sure. I got lucky being my brother in law worked for a company that had season tickets for clients, and I was fortunate to use those tickets ever so often. But the fact of the matter is, it's much easier since hockey season coincides with basketball season to cater to a client downtown than going out to Glendale.

I'm able to admit the only reason the Coyotes are in AZ still is because Glendale gave up $25M per year to the league. That's why I don't understand why fans hate the COG for cutting off the Coyotes. But the fact of the matter is, the team is still in AZ. Could be because there is no arena of NHL value available. This thread(and many others), centers around too much information that doesn't matter to the current state of the Coyotes.

AW:
Sorry for you fans there. Awful start to the year, for sure.
True about this thread: Llama especially likes to post anything here that is 'news' about anything Phoenix sports related, whether that 'news' has any direct bearing or not.

However, it does seem there are things that are important....For example:

* The slow start is not going to help any efforts to increase the STH base, nor to convince local fans to come, even for a game or two.
* The same slow start will generally take the Phoenix Metro area's mind off of hockey, because few are interested in a team at the bottom of the standings, with little playoff chance. (And, this is too bad, because the Suns are a wreck right now, too, so it should be a time of opportunity).
* The effect of the 2 things above will not help any desire in the public for a new arena.

Of course, the real issue with the team's future is....
*How great really are the losses?
*Who is really covering them?
*How long can they afford to do so?

And, none of us really know the truth about that.

I'm a season ticket holder. The same start could be said about any franchise.

Y0u ask the right questions, and those can't be answered. That's been the questions every time a new owner has been put in place for the Coyotes. It used to be the COG, but now who knows. What can Barroway cover? It's laughable at these threads that the real questions aren't addressed.

But all the same, still curious how Amazon could be a game changer.

But all the same, still curious how Amazon could be a game changer.

Its not, wouldnt be. Beyond a stretch to even imagine it would be and weve been down this road a thousand times... how once the economy picked up & if the Bidwells had proceeded with Sportsmans Park.... how once the vacant office & light industrial spaces started filling up & business relo's actually tracked here for a time, Luke AFB with its F-35 contracts, with big boxes moving into Westgate, with the Casino & Spa opening up, housing starts up & on & on & on that all of that & more, that all of these things combined would all be game changers & they were/are but it doesnt matter, does not matter a whit.

The NHL & Andrew Barroway have declared that playing out of GRA indefinitely is a non-starter, doomed, taking their game elsewhere and if not the East Valley or Phoenix then out of State. It wouldnt matter if Amazon, google, Apple & Microsoft all decided to open up branch offices in Glendale collectively employing 100,000+ people. Moot. Whats done is done. What is the COG supposed to do? Get down on their bended hands & knee's & beg the NHL & ownership for forgiveness, break their contract with AEG & once again start paying Barroway a $15M + Management Fee? How does Bettman walk back his words that "after 15yrs & many attempts to make it work in Glendale it clearly wont, location an insurmountable obstacle" (?) ... Its over. Done. There is now only one way out. Out of state. The only question is when & where.

I was looking for the original claim to be backed up....

Seems pretty straightforward..... that is merely the posters (aqib's) opinion, belief..... Thats what we do here, every other thread, every other board on hf awfulwaffle; "express opinions, beliefs". Your choice as to whether or not you agree, disagree or dont care either way. Problem with that? Then you have a problem with this site & chat boards in general. People here are totally free to hypothesize & voice their opinions.

The facts are Glendale has as much chance to land the Amazon HQ as the Coyotes will make the playoff this season. ;) Despite the fact they have three fulfillment warehouses located in southwest Phoenix and are about to build a fourth.

This issue was a non-starter to begin with and use an oft-referred to term in this thread..... to bring it up in this thread was a "moon shot" in itself. Kudos to Glendale at least trying but there are just too many other options more lucrative to Amazon.... including a couple elsewhere in Phoenix Metro.

The reason I think it would be so dramatic is, from all that we've read is that Glendale doesn't work because all the money is on the other side of the Valley. Drop 50K people making on average $100K a year in Glendale and suddenly there is a lot of money on THIS side of the Valley. Again, I don't think AZ has any real shot at it but the effect would be interesting to watch.

There in lies the issue. Glendale doesn’t have enough of the type of housing and amenities those $100k employees would want. Most would end up in northern Peoria, Surprise or as far out as Verrado to find what they were looking for. Then you end up with the same situation of families ferrying themselves out then back into Glendale on game nights.

Now if Westgate had matured into the complex it was originally designed to be you’d have a different situation completely. It would have provided everything those $100k would want. And that was the vision the city’s mayor at the time pushed for. The economy just dropped a bomb on it all.

Kypreos on HNIC: People questioning barroways sustainability. He’s suffered “what has been described to me as massive losses”. “People questioning if he can even finish the season as the sole owner.” “NHL still committed to Barroway... but it doesn’t look good”

Huh. Wonder how solid Nick Kypreos's sources are.... No question the franchises is hemorrhaging money and to top that all off Barroway has some serious debt service fee's to be covering. None of that's exactly "new news" but unable to finish the season? Maybe not on his dime but if that happens I'm sure the NHL will come to the rescue insuring payroll & expenses are covered, continuing to keep them on life-support & keep this thing off the front pages... still, a rather dramatic pronouncement.

Barroway when he bought out the farmers dozen of minority shareholders that comprised IceArizona stated in several interviews that he intended to move forward as sole proprietor, majority owner, preferred things that way, wasnt interested in bringing in any partners, giving off the impression that he was safe as houses albeit temporarily as the pendulum thats the arena situation draws ever more critically lower & closer to home. That if that didnt get sorted out & soon, it would prove fatal. No timeline given beyond "soon", Bettman vaguely stating "within a few years"... And now here we are, barely into the season and Kypreos with this bit of scary news already so soon? Crazy if true. This is like mesas's theory of "done by Christmas" coming true (or by Easter, whatever the case may be) if its true.

Appreciate the recap. Tuned in when they said 'comitted to Barroway.'

We're not even at the end of October and people are already questioning if he can finish the season as sole owner.

He tried to bring in investors when buying out IA but was unsuccessful so what happens when he really can't go at it alone anymore?

Perhaps an auto-renewal at year's end is not so much a sure thing anymore.

Ive assumed since he bought out LeBlanc & the rest of them that he in conjunction with Gary Bettman had a "Master Plan" of sorts, Plan A, Plan B etc, that they were working together, the NHL had his back & he had theirs. I have not seriously considered the possibility that he's "on his own", that the NHL would have essentially strung him up, left him entirely to his own devices sink or swim.

That they'd prop him up for this season & next, total long-shot but see if any appetite at the State or Municipal levels to be forking out & while he's doing that along with looking for investors the NHL closely following developments in Seattle & Houston. That if losses in Glendale became totally unmanageable & neither one of the preferred US destinations ready well, they can always play the Quebec card.

But this? To just throw Barroway into the deep end?.... I never seriously thought they'd have done that, no way. The very thought of it is so reckless, so ludicrous in & of itself given everything thats happened that sorry..... but I just find myself giggling almost uncontrollably as it simply has to be one of the most either beyond stupid & incompetent moves ever in the history of sport or one of the most fiendishly diabolical that Ive ever heard of. Mindblowing. If this is true.... Bettman needs to walk the plank. Resign. Retire.

Surely between what little they do take in, uncapped RS Proceeds, Development Funds, Central Revenues & whatever Barroway has on-hand or available through various LOC facilities it cant be that bad. Because if it is, what on earth was Bettman & the BOG's doing in ever approving this transaction in the first place?

The Kypreos comments came up on our GDT tonight and figured I’d mosey over here. ;)

Can’t confirm it but there is a strong rumor of a suitor. Whether it be a minority investor or more than that. But the person recently moved to the Phoenix area and has money.

YMMV.

@Killion
Buying out Tippett put a $10 million hit on the franchise out of the box.

I read that comment on the GDT as well. I took that comment as more of a tongue in cheek comment..the ying to Kypreos yang. It certainly did not have any more substance than Kypreos and at least Kyps comments come from a guy with some NHL connections as opposed to a firefighter. Maybe, as a moderator, you have more insight into the poster and his connections?

The poster knows a few people within the team. He’s not the type who would make up something.

But it’s like anything else. He’s heard something but doesn’t have any specifics. Therefore you have to believe there’s activity in the background and given how much Barroway committed to taking over the franchise versus his financial status it’s a plausible rumor.

Well as long as you are vouching for him;)...I won't dismiss the rumour completely. It just seems a little suspicious when someone states that...nothing confirmed..nothing concrete and won't offer any details..BUT trust me it is happening behind the scene. Why, no details? It is not like the potential buyer will vanish if the poster were to reveal some details on the HF boards. Maybe the Balkin has resurfaced from Atlanta?
Either way, I will mark it down on my calendar and await more details.
Who was it that tweeted early this summer to expect a joint NBA/NHL bid shortly after the tweet..convincing Sarver to give it all up to save the Coyotes in a joint venture? That one is on my calendar as well. but I forgot to mark down who said it.

Well if he is sick of having money, he should buy the coyotes...

This team has had/rumoured to have more parachutes drop on them than Normandy.

time for uncle Gary to spin his rolodex and bankrupt another sucker.

Was the $17 million in US expansion money from Vegas paid out in one year (or over a few years) to each team and if so was that last year or this year? Depending on the payout, it might help mitigate the Coyotes losses for 2017-18.

Imo, any chance for the playoffs is already over with yet another loss tonight. With an 0-10-1 record and probably a minimum of 90-92 points to qualify for the second wild card the Coyotes would need to achieve a record of 40-21 - 10 or thereabouts over their remaining 71 games to make the post season. I guess it's not impossible but it might as well be.

Even with the improvements to the lineup I was more than a little puzzled by proclamations of the Coyotes being a playoff contender this year. The team still lacks depth and are very young at many key positions. Young players make many mistakes especially when it comes to playing without the puck and at their end of the ice! A more realistic goal would be fake .500 around 80-82 points. A nice bump from last year and still achievable even with the slow start. Get Raanta back and hopefully the youngsters slowly but surely start getting comfortable in their roles and contributing to the team and we see progress in the final 3/4s of the season.

The bad news is with the playoffs all but unachievable at this point it will be that much more difficult to sell single game tickets for most of the remaining schedule. As if that wasn't a herculean task already!

Well, in the light of a near historic bad start to the season, now there's a rumour coming out of another potential buyer for the franchise? One with 'lots of money' and one 'moving to the Phoenix area'

So another rich buyer that didn't exists when:

  • The team was in BK protection and later league control for nearly 4 years and at a much lower price than today
  • Had one of the most lucrative area deals for a while and could have bought in when IA needed some help.
  • Couldn't partner with Barroway or just buy the team outright once the IA guys couldn't afford their share anymore after the arena deal in the legislature fell last year.
Now in the mention that Barroway may not be able to finsih the season playing in an arena location that he said is not viable long term and backed by Bettman now all of the sudden talk of another white knight, with no citation or details but many coyote fans are comfortable with this?

These are truly dark days, not only are fans giving up on the season...and probably for good reason....but it appears they are also giving up on Barroway.
