working on two plans, one involving the slot money and one without.

Exactly.

Actually it's 3 options...

- one with the license
- one without the license, but licence holder funds arena
- one without slots money at all

All slots applications have to be in by Dec 28th.

So the pens will not own the new arena or get any revenue etc from the acts that come into the arena? If that's the case this team will still struggle with money.

The Pens would run, but not own, the arena, as I understand. They would get a cut of non-hockey related revenue.

Make no mistake, they'll definitely be a lot better off financially than they are under their Mellon Arena lease.

Do you really think they'd draw this up without allowing for themselves to make more money? I mean, what would even be the point of building a new arena if it still means struggling financially?

Mellon Arena fails to bring sponsors, since the majority of companies take their money to PNC Park or Heinz Field.

Those are some pretty cool designs. I love that the arena is going to have the pens pictures all over it, kind of like maplelaff gardens used to. Unlike our arena here which has some crappy NBA team that can't even sell out until they reach the playoffs.

By the way is that arena drawing in the location that Mellon arena is currently in? Because I saw a shot of the arena live and it looked like there was NOTHING surrounding it.

They did it in D.C. (twice...redskins & wiz/caps) and is workin out quite well for em. Personally one name pops immediatly to mind when thinkin of a Pit sale...Paul Allen. It'd really be a shame for such a good fan base and a big rival of my Caps to get moved (especially with the future they look to have), but if it happens my $'s on them winding up in Portland....and I'm pretty sure he's got the $ to handle an arena.

I really hope this is all just some pressure bein put on by Lemuix.
The Avs ownership (over a couple regimes) did it with the Pepsi Center as well.

I think the news of a new arena for Pittsburgh is AWESOME! I desperately want the Jets to return to Winnipeg, but not at the expense of a franchise with the history of the Penguins.

I think its just a matter of time for Winnipeg to be in the NHL again, but I'm hoping it'll be a team like Atlanta, Florida, or what would be sweet revenge would be the Coyotes returning!

As for the 'Jets' name... the city of Winnipeg was given the rights to that name and logo when the team left... so that isn't an issue

GOOD LUCK PITTSBURGH!

Basically, the Civic Arena (now Mellon Arena) was the start of the downfall of that area (known as the Hill District). The Arena basically cut off that area from the downtown area and it has gone downhill since then.

I've seen the transformation of the area around the Columbus arena and if they can do that here, I would be very pleased.

Don't put too much hope into these plans coming through Pens fans. Spendell, I mean Rendell has already made sure that the Station Square group get the slot license thanks to their generous bride, I mean donation, to the Rendell campaign. Rendell doesn't care about Pittsburgh, he cares about himself and Philadelphia. I don't know why people in western PA voted for such a crooked governer.

This is my hope...

If the Penguins/Isle of Capri bid is so far superior in returns to the community than the competitors (which is expected), it will be hard for Rendell to give the license to his campaign contributors without risking an investigation and possible indictment (possibly spearheaded by the Allegheny DAs office or better yet the US Attorney's Office for W.Pa - based in Pittsburgh). That is why it is so important for us to keep the pressure on that corrupt pig - try to get some national attention focused on it as well.

Casino contender calls property owners

By Andrew Conte
TRIBUNE-REVIEW
Wednesday, December 28, 2005

Even though it has to compete with four other applicants for a slots license in Pittsburgh, Isle of Capri Casinos has started contacting property owners in the Lower Hill District about assembling land for a casino.

The proposed casino would be built east of the proposed arena, stretching across the block between Centre and Fifth avenues.

the arena district in columbus was not a "ghetto" nationwide arena was built where the old ohio penn stood till it was tore down for the arena to be built. it had some older warehouses and old carriage factories which stood near there which have been renovated for office space. also its across the street for the world headquarters of nationwide inc.

Don't act like there have never been any Canadian NHL teams in financial trouble. :biglaugh:

Bettman already saved canadian teams by getting a cap. Get off his *** already.

Just Canadian teams? He didn't save Toronto or Vancouver thats for sure. The only teams that were doing ok in the US was the Rangers, Red Wings, Aves, etc. Don't make it sound like the US teams were making millions of dollars while Canadian teams were falling apart at seam. Besides as I notice your US economy is falling apart at seam...similar to your US dollar.

Atlanta??? Yeah you seem to forget even when their team is crap they still outdraw whatever winnipeg used to. Not to mention that the city is far more attractive for Ratings, Corporate sponsors etc. Aint going to happen. Phoenix just got a brand new arena (wayyyyyy better than the small MTS centre) with a sweet deal.. so cross them off too. Florida I have no idea what's going on with florida, but I haven't heard of them moving. If they do move I garuntee you it wouldn't be to winnipeg.

Another competitor quits slots license race

"MTR Gaming yesterday removed itself from the race to build a casino in Pittsburgh, skipping the deadline by which slot machine license applications were to have been submitted to the state.

MTR is the second would-be casino owner to drop out of the bidding for the one slots license available in Pittsburgh. Beaver County developer Charles Betters, who is planning to locate a thoroughbred track in the city's Hays section, backed out of the casino competition on Monday."
