Well, a little later than predicted, that's for sure.

HBM2 is just too darn expensive.

I have to admit, I'm a bit worried about Radeon. Hopefully they come back next time with a bang.

They don't have to compete with NVIDIA at the ultra high end, but I do think they need to compete at the low and mid tiers. We need them to compete.

I really hope that GDDR6 is all that it's hyped up to be and be the exact alternative we need to HBM2 in terms of cost and performance. If it can harness that kind of performance (if not better) and be cheaper, I'm all for killing off HBM2, even though I like the tech.

Dumb question: What are cards better than, say, a 1080ti for? Are they just stupid expensive so they aren't even considered "gamers" or are they used to process like massive matrix/algorithms and, therefore, the tech isn't especially useful for gaming?

I mean I guess you could try to push 4K gaming at better than 60fps. I just dont see the point though. in gaming I think it comes down to

GTX1060 - 1080p/60hz(+)
GTX1070 - 1080p/144hz or 1440p/60hz
GTX1080 - 1440p 60hz-144hz or limited 4k/60hz
GTX1080ti - 1440p/144hz or 4K/60fps

theres some give or take there but I feel its mostly accurate for well optimized titles. anything better than a 1080ti is just e-peen or some kind of workstation use

The latter is mostly correct.

The "Titan" for example is still somewhat marketed as a "gamer" card, but NVIDIA technically classifies it as a "Deep Learning" card.

Essentially, you can buy a titan and get a bit more gaming performance out of it, but at that point you're burning money...but hey, some people have money to spend and just the one hobby to spend it on, so what the heck?

Personally, I've always been a ~$600-$700 (CAD) graphics card kind of guy. In 2011, that bought me a GTX 590. In 2015, a 980 Ti. In 2017, a 1080. In 2018/19, it'd probably get me an 1170.

Personally, I'd opt for the ASUS.

As a former owner of a ROG Swift PG278Q and a current owner of an Acer Predator X34, the Acer product doesn't exactly scream build quality.

Fantastic display, but it's the poor attention to detail that makes me nervous.

You'd be better off buying it from a US site and paying the Canada shipping.

My monitor is a 9 year old 1080p monitor. I clearly want something better .

You would think that, until they stop it at the border and charge you an obscene border tax to get it across.....:(

While I truly want a 4K monitor, I'm wondering if it's just a better idea to get a 1440p monitor instead. Much better prices.

Is this probably the best 1440p G-sync monitor? Acer Predator XB271HU 27" WQHD IPS NVIDIA G-Sync Black/Red Gaming Monitor, 2560 x 1440 (2K), 144 Hz w/ Overclocking to 165 Hz, Tilt/Swivel/Pivot/Height Adjustable, Build in Speakers - Newegg.com

I'd say that the ASUS PG279Q takes the cake just due to likely build quality, but it's going to be hard to beat the price of the Acer. They are basically the same display, just ASUS usually is a little more detail oriented and takes a little more care with their products.

Or if you want something a little bigger, the LG 32 incher is a popular choice:

LG 32GK850G Black 31.5" QHD 1440p 5ms 144Hz NVIDIA G-Sync Gaming Monitor, 350nits(typ), HDMI, Display Port, USB3.0, Tilt, Swivel, Pivot, Height Adjustable - Newegg.com

Unfortunately, if you want a reasonably priced HDR compatible monitor with adaptive sync, you'll probably be waiting for a reasonably priced high end Radeon GPU for some time because they are mostly FreeSync.

You could always go for my overpriced baby:

Acer Predator X34 bmiphz Black 34" IPS 4ms (GTG) 60Hz/100Hz, 3440 x 1440 21:9, NVIDIA G-SYNC Ultra-wide Curved Gaming Monitor, ZeroFrame Design, Predator GameView Technology, VESA Mountable, Tilt/Height Adjustable, 2 x 7w Speakers - Newegg.com

I'd rate it as a very good, albeit very expensive product. I had a few issues with mine as I mentioned earlier: backlight bleed is quite high (not unexpected for an IPS panel but still noticeable), my unit came with one defective light on the underlighting bar, and it also occassionally makes snapping noises as if the plastic is expanding just enough to shift it (hoping it's nothing electrical, but it has been working for quite a while).

The gaming experience is a mixed bag thanks to a lot of games (mostly from a few years ago or older) not supporting the format, but when it supports it (and most do nowadays), it's absolutely incredible. The most common scenario with the unsupported games is black bars on the side of your screen, which isn't horrible.

What is horrible is the monitor menu. I don't think they could've designed a worse one if they tried.

I find it incredibly useful for gaming in windowed mode while watching something on the other side of my monitor. The extra space is nice.

In short, fantastic gaming experience, but don't pay $1,500 for it like I did.

If you want to go cheaper, I think HP Omen X makes a 35 incher that isn't quite as good but still pretty awesome.

EDIT: HP Omen X 35" 4ms (GTG) 100 Hz G-Sync Ultra WQHD Curved LED Backlight Monitor, 3440 × 1440, 2500:1, 300 cd/m2, HDMI, USB, Tilt, Height, VESA Mountable - Newegg.com

There's also quite a few that are great 21:9 from LG, but they are FreeSync rather than G-Sync. I'd take them if Radeon would come out with an attainable high end GPU.

I think I just want something that is at least 1440p, G-sync, high quality and has a high refresh rate. But I'm still so f***ing nervous about the quality control of these monitors.
