After you've experienced the darkness of Northern European winter, you'll realize that it's not the cold that sucks.

Cold's actually very welcome to me. In those cases the snow is mostly dry.

The worst winter is +2-+4c or so when it's extremely dark and raining so that the snow becomes a wet mess. Then the next night when it's cold again the entire thing freezes and then you're stuck trying to ice skate with your shoes. Good luck driving a car, too. Going uphill was a ton of fun when the entire thing was frozen, as well. Had to go off the road and essentially hop from tree to tree.

I'd much rather have a real winter with -20c and lots of snow. It's really dark if you don't have some snow to reflect the light, too.

-20 where I am here in Saskatchewan. Wind is at 40 km/hr feels like -30. Give me slushy snow any day over this. The nice thing about this is the city should be flooding the rinks soon. My community has about 15 outdoor rinks so lots of places to play. Nothing like playing hockey in a snow suit.

So that's 14 goals in 14 home games.

But the real challenge comes next when he plays the top team in the League. It's one thing to score against teams like Edmonton, Dallas and Detroit. But it remains to be seen if Laine can manage to score against the New York Rangers and top golie Lundqvist.

Been there done that. Get with the program.

Jets still having, quickly calc. 27 home games left.. Laine would still get 44 goals if only scoring 1 goal in every home game :yo:

Here I am just thinking what the hell happened after the Jets training camp since he was struggling there and then scored in his first NHL game and hasn't shown any signs of slowing down.

I actually think Jets schedule may have hurt Laine's production a little. There were some games where the Jets were understandably lethargic. I don't know how the schedule makers decided the vast majority of teams have only 24-25 games thus far, and just a few at 29. Seems peculiar to me.

I agree. He seems to struggle the most in the second game of back to backs and the schedule has been brutal. I see some people saying he'd better have more goals than any other rookie since he's played more games when in reality he's been doing awesome despite the tough schedule.

Kyle Connor was killing it in the practice and Laine was struggling. Jets preseason taught me to not give a **** about a preseason ever again.

Cool. Although honestly I see these so call "advanced" stats as quite a load of BS in general. After all the most important stats are wins, team points, goals, assists and player points. Also +- is a relatively good statistic, as it really tells how efficient your team has been when you are on the ice. But +- is especially a stat that tells anything about a player only in the long run, as it is with all stats, it just emphasizes even more with the +-.

But the overly on going puck possession admiration in hockey is quite a lot of mumbojumbo. A team can play very well without having a lot of puck possession. It is all about smarts and having talent for scoring goals and preventing them. Nothing else matters in the long run...

Don't want to rehash this fun debate, but....yes, wins matter for past performance. If you want to have a deeper understanding of underlying performance though, possession stats have proven to be (and will continue to prove to be) a very effective way of measuring if the won/loss record is sustainable.

Regarding Laine, he's certainly putting up incredible goal and point totals so far, both at PP and ES. But is it sustainable? Someone posted a chart above showing the goal chart for Laine and the distance from which he's scoring. The point being made was how it impressive it was. I think I saw a stat that he's 209 out of 216 NHL players in average shot distance. I'd argue that shooting 21% from that far away is unsustainable.

Now, if he continues to improve (and he should), I'm sure his underlying numbers will as well.

I'd argue that shooting 21% from that far away is unsustainable.

That is unsustainable for almost everyone, but we do not know if it is unsustainable for Laine. By any logic, he should get better at shooting. And when your starting point is that you're the best shooter in the game (maybe ever) at 18 years old, you're going to set new benchmarks for shooting in hockey. And percentage is just one of those things that he could and should push the boundaries of.

Averages tell a story of what is sustainable for average. Laine is far from average.

Probably a little early to call him the best ever, but we'll see.

And where do you derive the lack of longevity?

He's almost in his 20s dude. Chances are he will start regressing next year, you can already see the wrinkles in his face and bags under his eyes. Right after his 100th career goal.

For me, fatigue is real for any young player not used to the grind of a 82 game schedule. I am glad his mother is living with him this year so he doesn't have to worry much of the home stuff, and eating well. But I have seen young players hit a wall in the 2nd half of the season.

For Laine, it is especially interesting, as I think he will get better with each game he plays. But also you have to factor in the fatigue factor.

So part of me says he will be better in the new year, and part of me says be weary of the fatigue factor the NHL presents.

Well, according to "math"
48.05 goals.

So GPG plus couple extras in one game for the third hatty for the 18 y.o. bragging rights.

I could see this math thing catch on. What fun!

If he does this and wins the Rocket Richard trophy, i would say that his rookie season is comparable to Teemu's. He is after all 4 years younger than Teemu was and back then scoring was much more easier.

I agree, Selanne scored 76 goals which tied Mogilny that year. It was a crazy time. There were 14 players that scored 50+ goals that season. Times have changed.
