Detroit is mediocre. They should be worse next season. Sabres didn't improve much but they might if Levi is decent. Ottawa was terrible but with the right coach and a decent performance from their goaltender could challenge for a playoff spot. Bruins should fade as should Tampa. Habs should be close to a playoff spot but a lot of things have to go right for them to make it.

The Habs core is too weak, and any improvement including a new player from the draft and or a signing won't be enough to crack the top four.

Seriously, if you look at the division, the Habs are at bottom of the division without much potential improvement over what the others in the division have now and who will also have improvement. Look at this year, Ottawa improved, Detroit improved, Buffalo improved, yet neither of any of them could crack the top four. Next year, the Habs will have some improvements but it is doubtful they will even make a wild card playoff spot.
We'll see. Summer moves from everyone in the division will affect how things look by Sept.

But imo it's pretty clear Mtl is in a far better spot than Toronto going forward... Laffs have a bare prospect group & 4 picks (2*1st, 1*3rd, 1*4th) in the first 4 rounds in the next 3 yrs... They are on the brink of being screwed for a long time.

If they were smart, they'd sell Marner & Tavares for as many futures as they can, and hope the cap room allows them to plug holes via UFA to stay in the POs while they retool on the fly around Matthews/Nylander/Reilly.

They won't. They'll go all in again this summer. And push that much closer to the cliff just as we start ascending the mountain.

Future is bright 😎

Get rid of Matthews also. He has a huge contract and is a no-show. Actually, let them keep all three! lol

He can't score when they need him. That is an issue!

You may be right, but I think he gives a lot more than Marner. If I were the Leafs I would have dropped Marner first.

Even if Marner waived his NMC, if asked, which team is gonna trade the needed assets to acquire him and then likely have to pay him probably 12m longterm to just have him pretty much disappear in the playoffs.

Maybe if he was surrounded by different players on another team he'd play better in the playoffs but I wouldn't count on it. He did though look very good in round 1 vs Tampa last season with 11 points in 6 games but that Tampa team was pretty much cooked.

I'll be surprised if Marner moves but it's probably for the best for everyone involved if he did get the hell out of there.

Bare prospect group? You might want to relook at that. They also have Easton Cowan coming up. "Toronto Maple Leafs prospect Easton Cowan was awarded the Red Tilson Trophy as the OHL's most outstanding player on Thursday. The London Knights forward finished with 34 goals, 62 assists and 96 points in 54 games in his sophomore season."

That's all Sportsnet can come up with after their darlings lose yet another series? Two hosts that sound like they are describing a funeral and Kipper from his hotel room?

RDS would have a three hours special l'antichambre with all their big shots and that's even if tva spawr had the game.
