A lot of Caps fans seem to think Trotz being a lame duck was never about the Caps management wanting to move on if they floundered again, but that he may want to retire from coaching to spend more time with his family.

That was Cage Helmet and his immature nicknames. To be a goofy, immature, 35 year old again! Like the Kremlin Kone days for me! At some point you get too old and you lose that creativity, which what happened to me in the last several years.Well it's his decision.
If he does, it would be one hell of a capper to his Coaching career after being mocked so many times by...well...US with the Second-Round Trotz(or whatever nickname we gave him).
But I think it depends on what the GM offers. If the money is right, I think he comes back for a couple of more years....
I’ll give it to you on Trotz. I don’t think he’s a bad coach, I never did, I just didn’t think he was this amazing and legendary head coach, either. He’s been talked about as a consensus top 3-5 head coach in the NHL for the last decade or more. I’ve never once thought Boudreau was anything greater than a median level HC in the league. Will do good, but not great with good teams and would probably do poor with teams below average. We have yet to see him coach a real below league median club at this level. Trotz never really coached stacked teams until Wash. Nash had some strong hockey clubs after the last lockout but probably not championship caliber and never had anywhere near an Ovechkin caliber phenom.Bylsma managed to take a roster that was stacked and make them look painfully average. I don't know how the hell he did it, but despite all their superstars, I was never afraid or feared the Penguins as a legitimate threat while he was there.
When I watch a Boudreau or Trotz coach team, I've more often than not seen a discipline, structured team who plays their asses off. Their losses always seemed more from ridiculous performances (Halak in 2010), being outmatched roster-wise (Nashville Trotz), or just a toss up series that didn't go their way.
I am allergic to any 'no way they are winning after g1 loss' predictions. The score was 5-4 before empty netter, anything can happen in this series.
Caps found a way to lit up Fleury, other teams didnt to a large extent. Jets were completely worn out in the series, physically exhausted - its the stanley cup final, both of the teams might be on paper identical to their regular season rosters of 1st round rosters, however its a completely new race in the SC finals.
Caps can take it in 5. Caps have the skill and physicality to do it. Unlikely? Yes. But ruling Caps out after g1 loss is not very smart.
I just wanted to point out it wouldnt be unfathomable. Ovie going on a hot streak, Holtby standing on his head.. Caps have the ingredients to take 4 in a row. They wont, but they could, just like Vegas could. The match-up is quite even imo.
Anybody making "no way" statements has apparently not been paying attention this season.
This is exactly what I’m talking about. There’s no evidence whatsoever thus far to suggest this matchup is “quite even”. If a Winnipeg or Nashville came into this series 12-3 and won game 1 no one would be hedging on them like people are doing with Vegas.
They “could” win, “it’s possible”, “if they can do x y and z”... you could fill in any team in those blanks.
I’ll be surprised if the Caps win two games. Trust me I want them to win this series now because Ovie deserves it but the likely reality is different.
Twas a great game yesterday, a lot of fun to watch.
Vegas is definitely winning the cup lol
Washington was already the underdog here...no way they are winning 4 of the next 6 against a Vegas team that is now 13-3 in the playoffs.
If you can find a way to score 4 on Fluery and still lose, you probably don't stand much of a chance.
I don't think the Caps can take it in 5, I really don't. They might be able to take it in 6 or 7, but I don't think they're winning 4 in a row. They also have more anchors than Vegas, see the GWG for reference.
I don't think Vegas is winning it in 5 either.
I would have lost a fortune if I bet money on this playoffs.* * *

The board never forgets
I think it's generally a fun observation that people that follow hockey as much as the posters here do have such broad range of opinions how the SCF will turn out. I am so glad this is not European soccer where you already know the champion before the season starts. NHL is so unpredictable, which is why it's so interesting.

he wasn't booed like he is in most cities after a cup win.
I think Trotz is probably close to HOF consideration for this cup win.
His longevity in Nashville, despite not much deep playoff success, is also probably worth a lot. Head coaches don't stay employed with one team for that long. It's not very common.
I think I saw it, too in the background while they were skating around....some players were immediately turning around and having a nice long "look".
OMG!!
HERE IT IS!!!
I won't post it 'cause it's NSFW so here's the image :

DAMN, SON!
(only in vegas)
“You have the cup, right?”
“No, I thought you had it”.
“Oh crap , we lost the cup”. ....... the day after
A shame it's probably all tourists in there, locals booing him out of the club would have made for a more entertaining video lol
Not all tourists.
Did you see how many Caps fans made it to Vegas? It was almost like clinching at home!
I'll bet Wash wish they woulda signed Hayes and Staff instead of DSP .
Woulda went 16-0
