I remember when Mersch came up for the first time, it took him at least around the same amount of time to get going and put himself in the mixer. Mersch and Brodzinski are different kinds of players obviously, but both came out of college and struggled in the first few games in the AHL and then found their games later on in the season. So I do think there is some merit to that idea about their first 20 games as a pro.

Watson has always been a boom/bust type. He's got a wicked shot, but it is a lot harder to get it off against bigger and quicker competition. If he wants to make it in the pros he's going to have to play as fearless as he did in juniors, which is easy to say, but far more difficult to do. I remember when Weal went to Manchester and couldn't cut it, then put up 100+ points back in Juniors. For guys that size, it's a mental thing. I think he's getting an eye opener right now, we will see how he handles it.

If it wasnt for the Kings, Spencer Watson would not have been drafted at all. All that with 68 points and 33 goals. Kings had the final two picks that draft.

He has grown a few inches but he's a long shot. Lets not forget.

No doubt. He doesn't have the frame where it looks like he is going to grow much if any. The problem is I don't think he will be able to overcome is his skating since he is just not fast enough for his size. He is a big long shot as far as the NHL, but I'm hoping he can at least pan out to be a solid AHL player. He'll make some progress, how much is yet to be determined. He'll certainly be an excellent shootout specialist and maybe effective OT and PP player. Still early.

I agree.

He wasnt an overager and like I pointed out, he was over a PPG player with 33 goals and Kings could grab him in the 7th round. That says something. Those skating issues were already there.

About his size, he was around 5''9 back than and probably done growing now.

Watson seemed like a kid destined to play in Europe ala Justin Azevedo and Brandon Kozun. Big goal numbers in the O and even decent AHL numbers. But neither were above ave skaters and smaller sized.
I too, hope he can contribute like both of those players did in the AHL. 7th round guys are long shots despite LA's success with getting some to the NHL.

All of them.. Clague and Moverare are eligible as they are in juniors. Kubalik we found has an out clause that kicks in next year. Derg's KHL contract is up after this year.

Thats awesome news, it gives us more youth, talent and trade bait... hopefully we finally get to see what Prokhorkin has, but thats 2 years away.. he seems to be just coasting by in the KHL...

I'm concerned about Moverare's skating. We'll get a real good look when he comes over to play in the A for a few years to see if he has what it takes. Supposed to have real high hockey IQ. For Clague, it will be all about his strength and to answer the question if he can play defense in the pros. It's pretty clear he has some high upside as a D puck mover. The European/Russian players are a huge IF at this point. If they do come over, Kubalik if real interesting.

In last weekend’s game in San Diego, it particularly struck me that not only was Auger slow, but in that game, he was playing a foot shorter than his size. Much smaller Gulls were regularly stopping him in his tracks and getting the better of board hits with him. I like the kid as a person, but unless he finds something, he’s already past his peak, sadly.

I was under the impression that both Kubalik and Dergachyov are in the Kings plans and both are leaning towards coming over.... Kubalik this season, Alexander the next....
Either way, next season's Reign team will have some upgraded talent...

Practice Notes: Reign Review Finer Points, Wagner Improving and Sutter Joins Coaching Staff - LA Kings Insider

ORI
: Austin Wagner had an active role on the ice today. I know he’s on a rehab assignment, but in your position of development, how has he progressed?
Stothers: He’s still wearing a special jersey that indicates that he should not have contact. Now, it’s a red jersey and it’s much the same as stop signs. Some people roll right through those. (laughing) You can’t just tap the breaks once and roll right through. There is the fear one of our guys will do a “rolling stop sign,” so we are cautious and guarded of that. We want to get him skating. He will have probably about two weeks where he will mirror some players and drills to get his legs underneath him and then we hope he will have about two weeks of gradual contact if not full contact. Then the decision will be made if he will go back to juniors or stay with us. He’s been feeling good on the ice which is encouraging. He has something that we do not have an abundance of, which is speed. He is lighting on skates. We don’t want to rush the process and he will have as much time as he needs.

You can see why Kempe struggled in the AHL. The game is so much slower, his game just didn't translate.

I can probably go to both games, but the Kings are playing at the exact same time on the 18th so I'll probably stay home for that one. But I'll most likely go to the game on the 19th as that game starts before the Kings.

The math does not compute. Good job whoever wrote the article for NHL.com

Better play last few weeks.

Really young team, they will need time to mesh and play consistent.

Stuts has done a great job getting these guys to mesh and play better. Points in 5 straight games now, albeit against not great teams. Except for the Reign goaltending which is very solid, this team is likely not a playoff team. It's funny how San Diego and San Jose, along with the Reign have been depleted by doing their job, developing players to play in the NHL. They are at the bottom of the barrel this year after being at the top of the barrel last year.
