Gagner is the best bottom of the roster pto type of guy the oilers have gone for. He brings a lot to that lower end of a roster. He is not the same player he was when he first came here.

Not gonna lie... It would be a really cool story book ending if Gagner signed and gets a Stanley Cup ring here in Edmonton. I'll be rooting for him.

Not saying this would actually happen but how funny would it be if the Oilers got Hall back and have him and Ganger on the same team again. lol!

I agree with the second powerplay unit, just that we rarely use one
18EV 2PP 1shortie

Keeping in mind this is limited minutes which would be consistent with usage here. But I would put Ganger on 2nd unit PP once in awhile. The skill hasn't left him. He's just a player that needs some open ice to create.

I have a soft spot for Gagner. Early in his career he was my favourite player in the league.

I’m skeptical of his ability to contribute in a meaningful way at this stage of his career on this current team, but I’ll still pull for him.

Gagner is a guy that we know how he fits in the room and adds some skill to the bottom 6. I still want to see some beef added to the bottom 6 though. If we can sign him to a 1 way deal and if need be try to put him in Bako for a bit that would be fine by me.

Not sure there's cap space for Gags, but he would be an ideal fit as the 13th forward. Great in the room, and brings a nice degree of versatility, especially as it looks like he's added PK'ing to his resume in Detroit.

Plus there is a slight path from him here, as this team doesn't have much in the way of talented and proven RHS up front. Hyman and Brown are grinders first and foremost, Pederson's most likely a AAAA talent, and all of Lavoie, X, Tullio, and Petrov haven't played a single NHL game. I like Derek Ryan a lot, but he's not a high bar to beat.

There is cap space, but it would mean others like Holloway/Pederson starting in the AHL.

IDGAF what anyone says. Gagner is a great person, who loves the team and city, is a serviceable player, and would go through a brick wall if he thought it would help his team win. I hope they can find a way to keep him.
Id run into a brick wall just to get him to notice me. I’m a huge Sammy Snowpants Fanboy.

I think his spot is Ryan’s. If Ryan gets hurt I would have Gagner playing. But I don’t want to pull out Ryan for Gagner unless Ryan has become awful after one offseason..

Signing Snowpants is a bad karma move. He's always on losing clubs))
If Karma is real it only benefits people that cause harm to others, because good will come to the harm doer to cause balance.
Like Bedard and the Hawks etc. perhaps I’m biased because I’m from earth where great people die young/sick/poor while the rich and evil have fulfilling and fantastic lives.

Two interesting personal stories with the PTO offers. I'm intrigued by Brandon Sutter's attempt to come back after long covid and feel if he can there is a very good prospective right shot defensive specialist. Sam Gagner is like a good literary novel coming full circle to prospectively close out his NHL career where it began with so much promise. Incredible to think that he is a 1,000 game NHL player with only 11 career playoff games. No doubting his character but how is his foot speed, defensive play to cover the bet as an end of roster player.

Two high character, twilight veteran team guys. No harm to see if either have anything left in the tank to help this hopeful Cup challenger team. One thing I haven't really seen this summer though is the supposed NHLers wanting to play on a winner in Edmonton and willing to take a cut to do so.

9th in points, 6th in games played from that draft class
I think this team needs more character guys, not less. A Matty Hendricks or a Devin Shore. With Shore and Yams out, could probably go with another one, and Gagner has been and probably could be that player. Still think that the room missed him the year we went and got AA/Green instead.
Unbelievable if he could come in and contribute, but even as a plug and play 20 game forward, can't imagine he's worse than Pederson. It's not as if we're swimming in RH shots

Edit: Gagner numbers. I forgot that Brandon Sutter was also that draft class - 19th gp, 21st pts.

I like these PTOs even just to make training camp more competitive. That being said I don’t expect either to get contracts honestly. I hope Sutter has something left in the tank though because he’s the right type of player for the 4th line, assuming he can play still.
