This was a glaring problem coming into this season and they ignored it(or just didn't want to spend any more on D). I doubt they'll do anything about it going into the next one.
Many want us to sign De Haan. Other than that it could be our 1st round pick or we trade for one. The 1st round pick would be 2-3 years away from NHL though.

Then you have to address a few forward spots because we need more skill up there as well.

That's great and all, but the team doesn't even have the space to fit Stone and Ceci's new contracts in under their budget let alone raises for Duchene and Karlsson. There's no way you sign a De Haan caliber D without moving out Karlsson or Hoffman's salary in trades or (super unlikely) dumping Ryan or Smith AND Burrows.

Burrows is seemingly getting a lot of ice time...

We have $16.5M in cap space next year, if we wanted to spend close to the cap like we did starting this season. Stone and Ceci would cost $10-11m, hopefully less than $5m for De Haan, then worry about Karlsson and Duchene after next season.

But if we can't get De Haan then who else is there. 2 year rebuild :(

At this point I'm starting to wonder if Claesson gets a contract for next season.
He had an excellent opportunity to step up this year and did not take advantage. He has not proven himself to be better than a #6 and there are a lot of D with likely more upside to compete with at that spot. He has done nothing to separate himself

I personally would not offer him a 1-way. He's not an NHL d man imo

Yep. If he's not willing to take a 2-way deal, I'm 100% fine letting him walk.

If he takes a 2-way deal from us, then he is cheap injury insurance we can stash in Belleville. If he walks, we really haven't lost anything of value.

Claesson just doesn't do any one thing well enough to make up for his complete lack of ability to read the game at the NHL level. He's just not worth a 1-way roster spot/ contract.

Claesson is odd. He showed some really nice flashes of ability last season, and had some good games. Seems like that Claesson was abducted by aliens and replaced by a pod.
