Couldn't agree more. Last season, the OUA switched to a more balanced schedule (1 game vs each team in other conference, home-and-home inside conference), and it's not only killed rivalries, but it's costing teams much more in travel dollars and time.

In the old schedule (24 intraconference games, 4 interconference games), each west team only had 1-2 long overnight-type road trips a season. Now, a team could have as many as 4 or even 5. Obviously this is way more expensive, but these kids are also students - missing that much school is difficult.

Last season, Waterloo had to leave two regulars behind on an Ottawa-Montreal trip because of academic commitments.

When the OUA decided to switch to home and home within conference and 1 game against every other team from the other conference, I was excited. With a pre-existing 28 game season, the schedule fell perfectly into place, which seemed like a great coincidence. In addition, I would get to see every team in the league in a 2 year period, and it would help eliminate the "strength of schedule" calculation within each conference which could greatly affect regular season results (some years your crossover would be McGill/UQTR/Carleton, or from the East's perspective Western/Lakehead/Waterloo and others it would be the typically weaker teams. In addition, the 24 intraconference would see some years with 4 against say Western and other years with less). From the "fair" point of view, the schedule is a no-brainer.

However, as a fan, I can't help but agree with both posts above. With the close proximity of some of the teams, I remember years attending both home and some away games, and seeing say Guelph/Western 3-4 times in the regular season and 2-3 in the playoffs. With that many views, you actually know the opposing players, their top scorers, better defencemen etc. I can't imagine AUS fans would be as excited for a UNB/SMU game if SMU came to town once per year and then you waited until next October to see them again.

Your point about the additional travel costs, time from school etc. is well taken as well.

My guess is that the traditional top performing schools were behind the schedule change. Many may remember that back in the 16 team league when the teams were in the four divisions, there was no schedule interlock between the Far East and Far West divisions, but the two "mid" divisions played full interlock. What you might not remember is that when Carleton joined the league in 07 the OUA went to a schedule pretty much the same as it is today - at the time I recall Western's coach Clarke Singer being strongly behind the change because he felt more often than not that the OUA teams were not battle tested enough when they go to the Nationals. When there was no Far East / Far West interlock, for a few years the only really tough games Western and Lakehead played during the regular season were against each other (with sometimes Waterloo or Laurier in there too), yet they had really strong teams in McGill and UQTR (and sometimes Ottawa) in their conference and could only play them in meaningless exhibition games.

The next season in 2008 when UOIT joined the OUA, they changed the schedule to a version described in one of the posts above, which was primarily geographically focused with limited interlock. I remember Singer being quite critical about this switch.

There's no question there is more travel now for everyone, but the scheduling this year has had some real head-scratchers: McGill making trips to Sudbury/North Bay, Guelph/London, and Windsor (thanks to Ottawa)/Thunder Bay on 3 weekends in 4 week stretch; Western making trips to Montreal/Trois Rivieres and Thunder Bay on consecutive weekends; UQTR playing in Waterloo against Laurier on a Sunday night (I'm sure there are more than these). I'm guessing they try to get most of these long trips out of the way before the bad weather hits, but this is a lot to ask of student athletes.

At this stage of growth and development, I think the OUA could return to a non-crossover league where each division is a conference on it's own - with the stronger conference's runner-up getting the extra ticket to Nationals. They're large enough.

If you want a stronger schedule - play more exhibition games and push the other schools to get more competitive. More McGill vs UQTR vs Carleton and Western vs Windsor vs Wasterloo makes for great hockey - that's your 'strength of schedule'

UNB, for example, got to see SMU & Acadia one weekend, then they go on the road to play those teams and fans are like 'what will happen this time, how will 'x' play, 'they need to battle', etc). Then a few weeks later there back in Fredericton for a rematch and everyone is keen to see it how it goes.

Should Western/McGill have a record against an "A" level team? I think they have both played Windsor.

Partly right. When I upgraded Windsor I missed a couple games from their opponents' schedules. McGill and Guelph get an upgrade (Guelph played them twice but I ony missed once). Western Ontario plays Windsor on Wednesday and then in late January. The next listing will reflect this.

Other than McGill making trips to Sudbury/North Bay (both are in the East conference, so these trips have to happen), couldn't agree more! With RMC in January, we play an up and back with North Bay (6 hours there and back), then the next weekend is Western/Guelph (London is 5 hours from Kingston) and then a midweek game in Sudbury (At least 7 hours from Kingston) and then we have to go to West Point a week after that which is another 6 hours. PLUS, RMC has done Windsor/Lakehead/Windsor trips 3 years in a row and Queen's hasn't played in either city in years.

Manitoba's shortest trip is 6 hours!

Maybe a CW-style schedule with weekend double-headers.

To me, it's more about growing the product than it is about travel time. If you build rivalries and intense games, more people will come to the games, and that can only help the wheel to start turning. It's not like it's a new recipe, that's basic sports marketing.

I think it's time to go back to a non interlocking schedule and have the best teams play more games against the tougher teams and vice versa. They do it in football, why not in hockey.

Yes, the McGills facing the Westerns will help the team get ready for the Nationals, but then again, so will the Redmen facing the Patriotes two or three more times, same for Western facing Windsor more often.

Plus, for the weak teams, playing against weaker teams might help to get some more wins per year, which can only be good for business and recruiting.

I heard former McGill coach Martin Raymond say a couple of weeks ago that the problem with CIS hockey is that the universities don't spend enough in marketing, which is why crowds don't show up. Well, that schedule change can be done for absolutely no cost and would boost crowds. Hell, with the money the teams will save in hotels and gas money, that could end up in marketing and publicity. Basic logic.

I totally agree with what Marty said, but a lot of schools play where there a bigger teams and bigger draws. Like UQTR is a great team, but more people go to the LNAH games than the CIS games. Kingston is the same issue as Queen's and RMC have to battle with the OHL's Frontenacs on friday nights for attendance. But in the East, where UNB, STU, Acadia are the top teams in town, they have great attendance cause they don't have to compete with the CJHL or CHL

Fully agree with that. Doesn't mean you have to make that a permanent situation like so many universities have made it, saying: Meh, it will never work.

Double-headers won't really solve the problem - the only situation where they really make sense are in the geogrphically isloated cities, which are Thunder Bay and Windsor. All of Lakehead's home series are double-headers, as are their East divison crossovers, and Windsor plays double-headers with all of their East division crossovers. In all other cases, there are pairs of teams that are geographically close who become scheduling partners, so it makes sense to play two different teams if you're making the road trip (the exception, this year, as stated in another post, is McGill who lost Ottawa as their scheduling partner). There may be a case for having UOIT and UQTR playing some double-headers as they are situated on the outskirts within the East division like Windsor is in the West division.

I do think some of travel problems have been compounded with odd scheduling this year - like why on earth is RMC going to Sudbury mid-week, and why on earth are they not going to Sudbury and North Bay on the same trip?

I like the idea of going back to no crossovers and playing all games with opponents in your own division.

Laurentian had to move the game on us because they couldn't play us in our original game date which i forget which was. Probably the 2nd of January cause we have Nipissing on the 3rd in North Bay. We weren't happy about the change!

I think you are probably right - just looked at the schedule and Queen's is at Nippissing on the 2nd and has a trip up to Laurentian at the end of January with no other stop along the way (at least for them it's on a Saturday), so they probably got moved too. This really is unfair to both RMC and Queen's. In cases like this, if a team that's 7 hours away requests a schedule change that results in a second trip for their oppoonent, they should give up the home date and come to you.

Mid-term report: CWUAA

CW-condensed.jpg
CANADA WEST MID-TERM REPORT: DECEMBER 2014

With no games to watch, it is necessary to do something. Hence, I usually issue conference mid-term reports. So, here we are with a look back at the first half of the CWUAA men's hockey season.

Actually, 64% of the regular season is now completed. Two weekends of activity which would normally have fallen at the end of the schedule have been bumped up so as to allow the Canada West all-stars to travel to the Universiade in February. There will therefore be a gap of two bye weeks between the regualr season and the quarter-finals. The 1st and 2nd place teams will face a 3 week layoff before hosting their semi-finals. IMO this somewhat enhances the chances for upsets in the semi-final round.

When play resumes on January 3rd and 4th (each series is using a Saturday-Sunday format due to coming off holidays) a first place showdown between the Saudi Alberta Evil Monkeys and Bedrock U Dinos will be featured. The other series will be UBC-Manitoba, Lethbridge-Sask, and Cougars-Cougars.

Here are the OHT36 rankings for the CW teams:

The Monkeys have a high-powered offensive team. They have 7 of the top 20 scorers in the conference. They are led by the league's #1 (Jordan Hickmott, 29 points) and #3 (T.J. Foster, 27 points) scorers. Their 78 goals scored are miles ahead of the next best team (MRU with 57). In almost every game (even losses) the Monkeys enjoy a substantial lead over their opponents on the shot clock.

Yet for all the positives, the Monkeys do have an achilles heel, or two. They started the season with a very wobbly record, including exhibition losses to Augustana and UBC. All seemed to be sorted as they climbed the standings. After another early season loss to UBC, they won 12 straight conference games and easily dispatched a couple of teams from the Ivy League in non-conference action. In that stretch, their only close shaves were a pair of tight wins over Manitoba. Then they were swept in a home-and-home against Bedrock U and suddenly there was a semblance of arace for first place. In all those games the shot clock indicated a one-sided game, but the scoreboard said different. This recurrent theme must be troubling.

The other potential dark cloud on the horizon is in goal. Kurtis Mucha is at .911 and Luke Siemens at .888 in save percentage. Those numbers make them vulnerable. Still, every team in the CIS would gladly trade places with them.

When it appeared that the Boys from the Stone Age could aspire to no more than a race with crosstown rivals MRU for second place, along came a sweep of the Monkeys and new-found hope for a race to the top. Then they barely scraped a home oce split against UBC to end the semester.

Although the Dinos have good scoring (they rank 3rd with 54 goals) it is their goaltending which is their strength. They have two veterans, Kris Lazaruk and Jacob DeSerres, sitting at #1 and #2 in GAA and #1 and tied for #4 in save percentage. While they have several offensive weapons, it is a bit of a surprise that their scoring is led by 2nd year Elgin Pearce (who had 5 points last year, and 20 already this year) and defenceman Kodie Curran (7th in conference scoring with 18 points).

The New-Kittens-on-the-Block are having somewhat of a breakthrough season. They have operated somewhat under-the-radar on the national scene. I, however, have enjoyed their games with the Bisons. Those games have been tougher and rougher than typical CW games. However, I am not completely sold on them as an A level team. Though they have a great chance to hang onto 3rd place, I believe that the 6th place team would stand an excellent chance to beat them in the quarter-finals. Then again, they would stand a very good chance of beating Bedrock U in a semi-final, should they get that far.

Their scoring is somewhat top-heavy. Cody Cartier (2nd with 28 points) and Tyler Fiddler (4th with 24 points) are high-end scorers, then not much after that. They key to their start was goaltender Dalyn Flette and his .934 save percentage. He was hurt and under-study Cam Lanigan posted a .915 in capable relief.

The Tweety-Birds are tough to figure. For years they acquired highly touted recruits who take them precisely nowhere. After a couple of seasons of being nosed out by Calgary for 4th, they actually went into reverse last year. A late-season collapse by Regina allowed UBC to squeak into the playoffs. On the positive side, they managed to win their quarter-final series against Saskatchewan. This was a significant win. UBC qualified for the 1977 University Cup as the CWUAA runner-up (back when it was a 4-team conference). Since then they ony made the playoffs when the league used a 6-team format, and often still missed as often as they qualified. And their only series wins were over Lethbridge, both in sub-.500 seasons. I believe they only had two winning seasons in this period as well. So knocking off Saskatchewan was indeed a big deal.

So where do they fit in this year? Well, the Birds and Bisons have parallel schedules. Both sides are finished with Calgary and Alberta. I suspect that the winner of their new year's series will have the inside track on 4th place, and that the two teams are likely to face one another in the quarter-final round. Neither side can take for granted the other teams.

The British Californians have only one player in the top 20 scorers, Anthony Bardaro, who has 4 goals and 9 assists for 13 points. In goal, rookie Eric Williams (at .924) has moved ahead of Mark Hewitt (at .894) as the starting goaltender. As I look over their stats and results I just find myself saying “average” a whole lot. Nobody is really scared of them, but nobody can take them lightly, either.

This Bison team has been almost completely rebuilt over the past two years. The team has added a lot of Junior A role-players who have largely exceeded expectations in 4th line roles. Two productive forward lines have evolved and it seems the team has an endless supply of quality defencemen coming their way. I will have more to say once the weekend previews begin again.

The keys for the second semester will be whether the depth forwards can produce enough and if Deven Dubyk maintains his exceptional goaltending performance. His .929 save percentage is tied for 4th best in the league. One question is whether veteran Brenden Rowinski and rookie Rene Hunter will be able to return to action in the new year. Both have major junior experience and could make the team that much better.

As mentioned in the UBC segment, the Bisons are done with Calgary and Alberta. The first time around against their remaining opponents they went 7-3-0, and that includes two losses to Lethbridge. They ought to be able to duplicate that record, in which case they would likely finish 4th.

The end of the first semester for the Banjo-Mutts brings forth good news and bad news. The good news is, first, that their semester-ending sweep against MRU ends that season series and, second, they open the second semester at home against Lethbridge. The bad news is that they will end the season with four series in which they are the under-mutts. They are at home with Calgary and Alberta and on the road against UBC and Manitoba. Against those four teams they went a cumulative 2-6-0 in the first semester.

Now the question is whether the defending national finalists can rally so as to find some pride in the doghouse. The team lacks the scoring depth of previous teams. They have two top 20 scorers (Craig MacCallum and Josh Roach, sitting at #11 and #12 respectively). In goal they are solid. Instead of Ryan Holfeld starting very game, he is in a platoon with rookie Jordon Cooke. Their stats are similar (.929 for Holfeld and .930 for Cooke).

All-in-all, Sask's numbers scream out “average”, placing them in a lump with UBC and Manitoba. All things being equal, one would expect Sask to be a quarter-final road team for the first time barring a fairly significant second semester boost.

The Banjo-Cats dug themselves into some deep kitty litter early in the season and will likely have a hard time digging themselves out. After losing 9 straight games to start the season, they managed a split with UBC then followed with splits against Lethbridge, Saskatchewan, and MRU. In a key semester-ending showdown with Lethbridge they managed a sweep to bring some new year's hope to the land of tractors. On the downside, they cannot make up any ground head-to-head against Saskatchewan. And they play the top 5 CW teams in the OHT36 rankings. In the first semester, they went 2-8-0 against those teams. Yikes!

A statistical run-down goes a ways to explaining the plight of the Kittens. They have no scorers in the league's top 20. Their top scorer (Cody Fowlie) has 11 points, which is only one point away. On offence, they have scored fewer goals than everybody but Lethbridge. On defence, they have surrendered more goals than everybody but Lethbridge. They did start the season with some skaky goaltending performances. However, the veteran tandem of Lucas Gore and Mitch Kilgore have both risen to a below-average-but-not-horrible .906 save percentage. Another veteran, Andrew Hayes, has yet to play this year.

Last year the Kittens collapsed and missed the playoffs. They would have to produce a 180° turn-around from last year to become the team that surged to a playoff berth.

The H0rny Ones look destined to have yet another disappointing season. They started the season with 8 straight losses. However, they only had two home games in that stretch. One was a 2-0 loss to MRU and the other a 3-2 loss to Calgary. After a sweep of Manitoba and a win over Regina, it looked like this was a team to reckon with, at least on home ice. However, that home loss to Regina in game 2 of their series was the turning point for the Horns. A win could have provided them with a “faint hope” at least. Instead, the loss was the start of a 7 game losing skid that has knocked them out of contention.

The stats are bad. The team is last in GF (but only 2 behind Regina) and GA (an incredible 28 worse than second-worst Regina). They have no top 20 scorers. Nobody is a “+” in the plus-minus. (Defenceman Cason Machachek is a “0”, which in this context is a compliment.) They have gone through 4 goaltenders, although one (Alex Sirard) has played only 17 minutes. The other three have seen more rubber than Lindsay Lohan. Damien Ketlo, with a .900 save percentage and 4.12 GAA, has the best stats. Warren Shymko and Dylan Tait have also seen considerable minutes.

When I have seen this team the last couple of seasons they have always put in an effort and played a gritty game. They just don't have the talent of the other teams. That said, they have been consistently tough on home ice. They should be able to find a win there somewhere in the new year.

Mid-term report: OUA West

OUA-2014-50x50-1.jpg
OUA WEST MID-TERM REPORT: DECEMBER 2014

So far the OUA East is +4 in the interlock with the OUA West. And that includes the 6 losses racked up by RMC. So the OUA West is -10 against the rest of the OUA East. The OUA West teams were also 0-4-1 against the Canada West. The result is that one would have to consider this the weakest division in the CIS. Even so, there are a lot of usually decent teams having what seem like below-average seasons.

The Lancers had a sparse and winless pre-season but then went on an 11 game wining streak to start conference play. On the downside, they lost both games against A level opponents (both by just one goal). They have also had nothing but one goal games in their three match-ups against B level teams. The second half will tell us whether this team can burst forth as a contender on the national stage. They are by any measure a .500 team against A and B level opposition and once the games get serious their ability to dominate C level teams will become quite unimportant.

The Urban Cowboys finished the 1st semester 8-0-1, and the last 6 of those games were played on the road. They were off to a wonky start and appeared to be just another face in the crowd of OUAW teams. They have wins over Windsor, McGill, and UQTR.

Ry High (as those in The Big Lemon call it) emerged as a solid opponent last year after years as a doormat. Thus far they a prototypical B team. The one oddity is their lack of games against fellow B teams. So far, just one game! They managed to draw an interlock schedule of Laurentian, Nipissing, UOIT, and Queen's (all C teams).

Waterloo was looking like a potential A level team until a 0-5-1 skid in the middle of the 1st semester. Their solid 4-2-0 record against A and B teams is offset by a mediocre 6-4-1 against C and D teams. This all makes a cogent analysis of this team very difficult.

The Badgers are often an odd team, and a difficult team to rank. Not so this year. They are definitely below the A and B teams in their division, yet ahead of the mass of C teams. The way they were crushed by McGill and Carleton I don't see them as a team ready to make a jump.

The unique aspect of Lakehead is that they are the only team in the division to have played a majority of their schedule (9 games) against A and B level opposition. They have not been without their hopes against A and B teams. However, that 4-4-0 mark against C teams makes it hard to be optimistic about a rapid return to the A level.

The Blahs are definitely a C team. They are .500 against the C teams and have been thoroughly beaten by the A teams. Not to mention a combined 8-0 whitewashing by Manitoba in non-conference play. They are basically in a dead heat with Lakehead in the OHT36 rankings.

The Yorkies have had some decent results against B teams so far but their losing record to the C teams is a bad omen. And how did they give up 8 goals against Concordia? They will be in a tough battle to finish in the top 8 and get a playoff berth.

Goof was once a national power. Now look where they are. They had a decent pre-season record and seemed to be well on their way to be part of the mass of so-so in this division. Now a playoff berth might be wishful thinking.

OUA EAST MID-TERM REPORT: DECEMBER 2014

When introducing the OUA West I pointed out the East being +4 against the West so far, and +10 when one excludes RMC. The East was also 6-2 against the AUS (the losses were by STU and UPEI, but still). The odd thing here is that the upper crest of the division have not played very often against A and B teams, which makes them difficult to evaluate. One thing to keep an eye on in the 2nd half is whether Laurentian and/or Nipissing can move up from C+ and whether UQTR can move up from B+.

So here's the odd thing. McGill has only played 4 games against A and B level teams, and 3 of those were from the OUA West. They ended the first semester by trouncing Carleton and have yet to play UQTR. I would like to see McGill play a lot more games against tough teams. They do try to boost their schedule. They brought in STU for some AUS games. But STU is last, and McGill still had a tough time.

UQTR had a fabulous start but are now winless against A and B teams in their last 3 tries.``They still have their two games with McGill to be played. Other than that they just have Ryerson and a lot of C teams. They have been racking up the goals (at 72 they lead the division and are 4th in the CIS). While they have a good record, it is hard to rank them as an A team given their record against A and B teams so far.

Carleton could also use some tougher opponents. They have only 1 loss against C teams, and only 1 win against B teams. Their record at least shows consistency. But the unfortunate extrapolation is that this is a team unable to do well against the good teams. They only have two games left against good OUA teams (McGill and UWO). Those are “must win†if they want a big rankings bump.

It is good to see a revived program like Laurentian do well. A boost into the B level is possible. Of note, they start the 2nd semester with a double-header against Windsor. They also have two games remaining against division rivals Carleton and Nipissing. Good performances in those games could see another B team in the OUAE.

The Nippers are very close to Laurentian and a move to B level in their own right is possible. Those 4 losses to C teams are a bit of a millstone. They have a tough closing schedule, with two games against Carleton, one against UQTR, and two more against Laurentian. This presents both a risk and an opportunity.

UOIT often has a confounding record. Not only have they split their 4 games against A level teams, their losses have been tight games. Then against B level teams they have been less competitive than a fly against a windshield, being outscored 28-6. They have even split their games against Laurentian and Nipissing. Yet they are only 3-2 against the remaining C opponents.

The Bees are clearly worthy of the 8th ranking in this division. Just enough wins to avoid a D but no hope for a B. Since the OUA gives 8 playoff berths per division, the Bees are in a great place, having a 10 point bulge over RMC.

The only ray of sunshine in a terrible season is that the Paladins have at least earned a bonus point in their last two games of 2014. There was actually some basis for hope in the pre-season. They have lost 9 games by at least 4 goals.

Mid-term report: AUS

aus-2012-50x50.jpg
AUS MID-TERM REPORT: DECEMBER 2014

Is the AUS still the strongest conference in the CIS? Acadia had a poor tournament at last year's University Cup. However, it is often unfair to rank a conference by the performance of only one team in one tournament. And in 2013-14 the AUS was granted just one berth in that tournament. In non-conference play this year the AUS only played teams from the OUA East. New Brunswick beat Nipissing 11-1. St. Thomas also beat Nipissing, by 5-2. The rest were losses. St. Thomas lost twice to McGill and UPEI lost twice to Carleton and once to Queen's. Now, even if the conferences were even strength those match-ups favoured the OUAE by a 5-2 margin, and that's what happened. But UPEI's 3 loss tour was a disappointment. After 8-3-1 against the OUA last year I will need more than a bad tour from UPEI to give the conference a downgrade. But a bad U-Cup when they are hosting could alter perceptions of the conference.

The Squirrels are ranked #2 in the country. However, to sustain such a ranking they will have to improve their record against A level teams. They are one program to measure success by national titles, and to achieve that you have to beat strong teams, not just the pretty good B teams out there.

The SMUskies are doing well against the big teams, in fact they have beaten UNB twice in three games and swept Acadia. The top 3 teams in the AUS are all compiling impressive records. It is hard to believe that a team may have to run the table against B and C teams down the stretch to stay in contention for 1st place.

The Cajuns are even with the SMUskies and are only rated behind them because SMU has more games against A level teams. So, the Cajuns are #3 in the AUS ranking. So will the AUS have 3 of the top 4 in the CIS? I would doubt it because somebody should falter a bit against the good B teams, and an A level opponent is never too far away.

St. F-X has probably shifted categories more often than anybody in the OHT36 rankings over the years, always between A and B. And here they are yet again teetering on the brink between the two levels. It would be no great shock to see them lose more than they win against B teams, nor would it surprise that much if they were to win more than they lose against A teams. That's the way it is for the Jeremies.

The Pampers somewhat soiled the image of the AUS in the pre-season. But they have closed the 1st semester with 3 straight wins and a respectable record. Should #5 in the AUS be #15 in the CIS? Usually some teams from the horde in the OUA establish themselves as they play more games, so I would think to hold UPEI will need a few results against the A teams as well.

To an extant I believe The Eggs always have an expectation of returning to the upper echelons of the CIS. It seemed they were well on their way, but they are now a sub-.500 team with a precarious hold on the B level.

A cloud was hanging over Dal-lousy for a couple of years now. Heading into the season I never heard much optimism about them. They are not in any danger of a playoff berth but they are a solid opponent. And, they have had a better season that STU.

The STU Pids ran up a lot of name-brand recruits in the off-season and generated loads of optimism. But if there is one thing blatantly obvious, it is that they are the #8 team in the AUS. They have given up 90 goals. Next worse is Dalhousie at 63. In fact, in whole CIS theu have the 2nd worst GAA at 5.39. RMC is last at 6.76. To move from 34th to 33rd (Lethbridge) they need to improve their GAA by 0.75. Wow. If they need 6 goals for a win, they'll be lucky to get even one more.

The Windsor Lancers were banged up when they came to Fredericton, so the game scores against UNB may not be predictive. Both teams were sloppy in the 6-5 V-Reds win on Saturday (and UNB's goaltending was average at best) and Sunday the Lancers team defence went missing, as UNB scored two quick goals and never looked back.

Windsor left two of their ex-OHL defenceman at home to heal up, and a third turned pro on Boxing Day. They also have an injured ex-OHL forward. They had at least one player making is CIS debut against UNB, and the roster featured a lot of depth players.

They are hoping to have all three injured players back this weekend.

It was the opposite situation for UNB, who welcomed back three players who have missed a lot of time with injuries, especially defenceman Alex Wall, who was injured in the first game of this season against his former team UPEI.

Both B+ teams scored wins over A teams. However, with this being a sparse week out east, no teams are changing levels. Some teams have gained or lost a “+†or a “-â€, but that's it for now.

The teams to be promoted a level are UQTR (going from B to A) and Laurentian (going from C to B). The remaining C+ teams (Regina and Nipissing) lose the + and join the plain old C teams. St. Thomas also gets shoved to the D level. They are just losing too often and by such large margins, also. Also on the downside, Saskatchewan and Ryerson now have a – in the newly reintroduced B- category.

For future movement, there could be mobility between MRU and McGill (currently in A-) and St. FX and Carleton (currently in B+).

# indicates tie game included

soap.gif

McGill was teetering on the brink of the A level but their win over Carleton keeps them up there. Ryerson should really be dropped. But they have one more shot to stay in the B level with a game against Waterloo. The AUS has really become a two tiered league this year. Moncton has to be on a relegation alert.

The B level underwent a major transition. St. FX and Carleton got promoted to the A level and Ryerson and Moncton went down to the C level. Meanwhile, Nipissing got a boost, largely on the strength of their head-to-head win over northern rival Laurentian. This leaves UPEI as the only B team in the AUS. This is unusual, but so are the AUS standings. I could see UPEI, Saskatchewan, and Nipissing moving down to C, and Moncron and Ryerson going back to B. There have been some A teams on wobbly ground but it is hard to see any moving down. That said, the OUA teams generally have a lot of games remaining against C teams, hence a losing streak could greatly affect things. The whittling of the B level is perplexing. The CWUAA has a normal skew of records, but the others have a dwindling middle class.

St. FX is always a confounding team. Even though the former A- teams have vamoosed to the new and improved B level, there is a chance they could move down. Hard to see any movement between the C levels. [/b][/FONT]

In the end, the four categories are clearly needed this year. And UQTR and St.F-X are moved down from A to B. The B+ is a very large group, with 7 teams. In the end McGill, Carleton, UQTR, Windsor, and Western Ontario all belong in the same group. St. F-X and Mount Royal belong with them. So if all move to A, there would be 12 A teams, and only 3 B teams.
