It is too early for a poll, since the OUA and AUS still have loads of exhibition games to play. However, the CW starts its regular season on September 25th and its pre-season is done. So here's all the scores to Sunday, September 21, 2014, and the CW rankings.

As I did in the early going last season, I added a second row beneath each team to show their records against level of opponent. Not included were the games against NHL or European teams. UBC, Calgary, and Alberta all beat each other. Alberta, though, lost to Augustana and two wins were in OT. Even though pre-season, this ranking is funny-looking. I suspect major shifts, hence no new letter grades for the teams.

MRU's quick start cannot be written off any more. They swept Calgary, who themselves swept Manitoba. Manitoba's 6-0 against B level teams gives them an edge over Alberta. Sask has to get 2nd but I am not completely convinced. Regina will have a tough time staying at B level. The top 6 should remain the top 6 all season.

I beg to differ!
Have you witnessed ANY STU GAMES this year?

Their 1-5-0 record is deceiving.
I travelled to Montreal last weekend to witnesse a VASTLY improved Tommies rendition play.last years CIS #3 ranked team and this.years #8 ranked McGill.Redmen .

Game one, a 4-3 loss in O/T, decided by a kicked in goal.was evenly contested with.many scoring chances on.both sides

The Tommies had just got off a 10 hour.bus bus ride.

Having been "in".the rink I can attest to the TOMMIES having launched their return to prominence a special thanks 15 rookies + returnees deported themselves well.

Should be noted that McGill sports two former AHL goaltenders who in period 2 of one of the games being outshot by Tommies 17-6.held the fort.

Sooooooo,BEG TO DIFFER, Tommies are an improved bunch.

Note that there is a second row beneath each team to show their pre-season records against each level of opponent. Not included were the games against NHL or European teams. The ACAC teams are either C or D level.

The funny thing so far is the lack of teams that have really impressed with a hot pre-season and early season. The only A teams all have an A-, meaning that they could easily be demoted. There is very little to choose between the A- and B+ teams.

In the CW, I am not sold on MRU but the ranking is results-based, hence no argument. In fact, a case could be made that they are the only team worthy of a position in the A level. Alberta is 4-4-0 in games not involving Lethbridge and Regina, and have yet to face any of last season's top 5 CW teams. Calgary looked incredible in the series against Manitoba but were swept by MRU. Arguably, those three A teams have really done no better than Manitoba and Sask. UBC may be only 2-2-2, but they have yet to play Regina or Lethbridge. There would be some major shockwaves across the country if Alberta was to fall into 6th place.

It is harder than usual to rate the AUS. First, they started late and, in fact, have only played 3 regular season games thus far. They had no interlocking games with the CW, and went 2-5-1 against the OUA. Now, if UPEI looked like they were going to be a cellar-dweller then this record could be overlooked. But they took UNB to OT. Basically, Acadia and UNB are in A level for the same reason as Alberta and Calgary. With UPEI, STU, and Dalhousie in the C level, the AUS has a downward skew for probably the first time since these ratings started.

The wins for the OUA against the AUS were registered by teams from the OUA East (Carleton, Queen's, McGill, and UQTR). The OUA West went 0-5-0 against the CW. Lakehead, Guelph, and Toronto all exit the B level. I don't believe that Lakehead has previously been a C level team. UQTR is very close to a promotion to A level. In the end, I kept them at B+ because their highlight result so far is a 6-4 win over Carleton, a team with a wobbly start.

One final word: In the early season one good or bad weekend could greatly alter a team's outlook.

Good idea on keeping UQTR in the B's. They haven't bonded together this year yet and I haven't been overly impressed. Doesn't mean the talent isn't there, but it's lacking chemistry.

 

[RED ARMY EAST]

UPEI, is not a C level team.
They may not have set the world on fire during the pre-season, but have recruited Darcy Ashley and Marcus Power from the Q, Power had over 100 points in his last year of junior.
They have lost two close games to UNB and Acadia to start the season, but will again be a tough team to play in an ultra- competitive league.
Once again, STU and Dal (AUS) are not easy to play, but are at a different level than the top 6.
Mount Royal has been a great addition to the CIS and CW! Their results thus far are impressive!

No teams were shifted a letter grade, though many gained or lost a + or a -.

In the CW, Alberta had a convincing sweep of Saskatchewan, but have yet to play their top 3 opponents within the conference. The big tumbles go to Sask, St. FX, and McGill. UBC edges past the other B grade teams. Although they lost 0-1-1 to Sask head-to-head, their 2-1-1 against A teams gives them credibility. Lakehead look ready to return to their usual home in the B level. We'll see how they fare with one more week of results.

Due to time constraints I did not explore the merits of category shifts. MRU were swept by Alberta, but they are still 2-2-0 against A level teams, so they remain in A level for another week. St. Mary's and Laurentian could be deserving of promotions. Let's see how they do this weekend. This week there were a few shifts within the categories, and Lethbridge was the big gainer.

Saint Mary's and Windsor made the jump into the A level, whlist Acadia and Mount Royal barely hang on. Alberta becomes the first full-fledged A team, the rest being A-. At the other end, York finally fell from B to C. Laurentian was getting close to a promotion but two losses kept them at C level.

It is funny how the OUA has had so few series between B level teams. Especially in the OUA East where Carleton, UQTR, and McGill have played 10, 11, and 12 games against C level teams.

The OUA West also has way more than the usual amount of C level teams. Guelph, Toronto, and York are all sub-.500 against C teams. Brock, Lakehead, and Laurier all range from 0-4 to 1-4 against B teams. That leaves just Windsor, Ryerson, Western Ontario, and Waterloo in the A and B levels. And Waterloo is teetering.

The funny thing is that Nipissing and Laurentian (from the OUA East) are the best-positioned OUA teams to get a boost to the B level.

Maybe it is time for the Q & O to split again. But even so the schedule quirks could remain. The problem this year is that there have been so many B v C games and not enough B v B games so that we could gauge how good the B teams might be in comparison to teams from the CW and AUS.

Not enough teams in Quebec for its own conference. Unless Montreal gets a men's team or like in women's hockey have Carleton or Ottawa in the RSEQ, that won;t happen
