Apparently they did something right with the junior programs here in Finland a few (or maybe ten?) years ago. It seems crazy how much talent there seems to be coming every year, compared to early 2000's.

Have you seen Tolvanen live? Curious as to what your thoughts are. I have only seen him play in international competitions and he looked like a total stud.

I've never seen him. And actually I think it's almost 15 years since I last went to watch a game live

I live maybe 1km from the local arena (Liiga team JYP) but I've pretty much lost all interest at Liiga, though I've been thinking about going to a game for a while now.

With all the Finnish talent that's been coming into the NHL, you need to eyes our ears over there. We can't always trust Button

I've seen Tolvanen a couple of times. Looked like a stud to me too. That shot is deadly, and he has an edge too, although he's small.

If we only think about talent (hockey IQ, puckhandling skills, shot etc.), he's at the same group with Barkov and Laine (not saying that he's equally good 2way player as Barkov or equally good goalscorer as Laine, but the whole skill package convinces). Right now I see him as the best Finnish player in 2017 draft before Vesalainen.

When I saw a couple of games he played at the U18's, I was like who the hell is this kid? I thought he was draft eligible this year and I started wondering why he wasn't on anyone's draft lists.

And yeah, I like the edge he plays with. He kinda reminds me of Max Domi actually.

What is it outside of Tolvanens shooting ability do you guys think makes him elite? Like a potential top 5 draft pick caliber.

I haven't been able to find much footage on him besides highlight reals which consist of 97% of him taking shots. I need to see more than just an elite shot to determine if someone is an elite prospect, so if anyone has any good videos please share them.

A lot. He's a player that you notice and someone who is fun to watch. He's not scared to throw his body around, he's got some wheels, and you can tell that he's got all the offensive tools that you would expect from a top draft pick.

He's fast and highly skilled. His shot is definitely his strength.

Dont see him going before Foote, Liljegrin or Patrick as they are more complete players at more important positions. Even Comtois who I haven't seen play but apparently is kinda like Dubois, does everything well and cores.

Eeli Tolvanen's scouting report https://prospectshockey.wordpress.com/2016/06/27/chl-import-draft-prospects-part-4/
Eeli Tolvanen is a speedy offensive minded winger with impressive hockey sense and a strong compete level. Committed to Boston College for the 2017-2018 season Eeli Tolvanen boasts a skill set indicative of a pure offensive threat, however the speed Finn also displays an impressive developing two-way game and strong play away from the puck. With elite puck skills and a shoot first nature to his game, it’s no coincidence that Tolvanen’s best offensive attribute is his shot. With a true nose for the net, Tolvanen displays a quick release and a shot with impressive accuracy and strong velocity. Tolvanen has quick strike ability as he can get his shot off mid-stride and will shoot from all over the ice. A player who hunts the puck offensively, Tolvanen shows a tenaciousness in puck pursuit and can force turnovers in multiple ways as he aggressively attacks the puck carrier or simply anticipates a developing play to near perfection. A smooth and agile skater with above average speed, Tolvanen plays with impressive pace and does everything he does well at his top speed. While Tolvanen does possess developing playmaking skills, he can be a bit one dimensional in the offensive zone despite showing intriguing vision and creativity. A player who competes hard and works on the back check, Tolvanen could certainly stand to add some strength to his frame along with more of a willingness to inject physically, at least in puck battles.

I think this draft has the potential to be better than many may have thought at first.

This happens literally almost every year

That Elias Pettersen kid is a PPG in the Alsvenskan which is teir two pro hockey in Sweden. Pretty impressive for a 17 year old kid. He's ranked 12/13. Guarantee that goes up realllllly quick.

It's a down year at the top end from what we've seen the last couple years, but there are still plenty of good players and I feel like it's a bit of an exaggeration when people categorize the whole draft as weak - while true for the top end - I think there are many worthwhile players. I've been paying more attention to this years draft than usual since I have more time on my hands.

We're sucking right now, but you know we'll have a great midseason stretch, suck again, then win some meaningless games & get some valuable winning experience :sarcasm:
No way we finish bottom 3-5.
It's all good cause it should put us right around Cal Foote.

I wonder who will be this years Colborne and go HAM the last 6 weeks of the year, put up 2 points a game and worsen our draft odds?

I'll go with Frolik and Backlund, they'll do it together.

But seriously, **** this season. 16 games in and the season is already lost. We'd need to rattle off a 5 game win streak just to get to faux .500 (10-10-1). And I have no faith in that happening. However, I also can't see Monahan keeping the same pace he's at and putting up 33 points on the year. Nor can I see Bennett or Gaudreau keeping their crap (relative to what they can do) pace either. On the third hand though our defensive zone structure is abysmal and has been for years and I don't see it improving over night with the same group of players we have.

Only consolidation I see is that our farm team is being carried by our prospects this year opposed to years past where a lot of goals were coming from AHL lifers. Janko, Klimchuk, Mangiapane, Poirer, Pribyl, Kylington, Andersson all having good years.
