Excuse my ignorance... can someone please explain to me the meaning of "bird in the hand or two in the bush" that Sekeres keeps referring to?

Bird in hand = Something you already have and know
2 in bush = Something that you don't have but might be even better than what you are holding but you don't know for sure

He's referring to upside versus safety. Shinkaruk had a higher upside, but the Canucks feel Granlund is a safer bet to have some type of NHL career, though he has a lower ceiling.

McCann and Hamhuis for Drouin
Higgins to Washington for a 7th
Burrows to Montreal for a 3rd
Hansen to Chicago for a 1st

That would be a successful TDL

This is just what I don't understand if we don't trade Hamhuis....

  1. The market for defensemen this year is hot
  2. There are very few other quality blueliners available
  3. Yandle is likely off the market
  4. Polak just got traded for a 2nd
  5. Hamhuis is likely the best rental defenseman available
  6. Canucks are NOT in or close to a playoff position

The conditions are all prime for the Canucks to get a LOT more for Hamhuis this year (if he agrees to waive) than we would in likely any other year. Why the hell won't we take advantage of the situation?

It's no secret that contenders like Tampa, Chicago, Dallas, Washington, LA all want a defenseman and they're competing for a very limited market. For god's sake I know we want to make the playoffs but sometimes you have to pull your head out of the sand and leverage the situation you're actually in and not the one you want to be in.

It's also called thinking inside the box..the problem is Benning's box is a small one that contains a flea circus.

I wouldn't even use 80% for Granlund. He's not a good NHL hockey player.

Yeah, everyone keeps saying Granlund is a "serviceable" NHL player, but I don't see any evidence that's the case. He was scratched six of the past ten games leading into the trade, and the Calgary media seemed to think he'd have been sent down to the AHL if Hartley didn't have some Desjardins/Vey thing going on with him.

Yes! Price is going into the Weisbrod problem.

Sekeres hit the nail on the head with his Welcome Matt bit. Gambling in trades is fine once in a while, but that's all it should be, once in a while. Most of Benning's trades have been gambles with very few actually being ones where you take advantage of other teams' positions, selling aging rentals, etc.

It's like going to the casino and playing poker vs. roulette. In poker, you know your own hand and can position yourself to achieve the best outcome a majority of the time based on the actions of others. In roulette, you're just spinning the wheel and hoping you get lucky with no skill, analysis, or anything else involved.

Sure you can get lucky, but eventually, you'll get bit and get bit hard.

Especially playing inside. It's like Benning keeps hoping red 14 will hit.

Couple things i have come to realize.

1. Hamhuis wont be moved
2. We wont be acquiring any additional picks let alone a 1st

Why? Because jim benning.

JB had done nothing in the past or said anything to indicate he is trying to acquire additional draft picks.

He still thinks this is a playoff team. If you are expecting him to acquire a 1st you are kidding yourself. He is clearly targeting other players /prospects.

Depends on the player/prospect we're getting.

If it's someone like Baertschi, then I wouldn't mind.

If a player can't make the lineup for a bottom 5 team, chances are said player is not a very good player.

It's definitely becoming a problem.. Bob McKenzie has even said it seems Weisbrod is the common factor of the 2 Calgary trades. It makes me and probably others think Weisbrod has Benning wrapped around his finger.

I was gonna mention this earlier, but did it bother anyone how Benning said "When we saw this player was available (referring to Granlund) we made the trade" It makes me think that they didn't take any time to think about it and were just like "Shinkaruk, take him"."
