Fair deal imo, but how far off is Shattenkirk from Butcher these days that this is a good deal (all RFA years) but no one apparently wants Shattenkirk at 50% retention (3.325m x 2)?

Isn't it possible that he has offers but wants to see if he can somehow return to the Leafs?

It is, yup. Still seems kinda weird to have a dman with that production sitting unsigned a month after free agency started.

Shat has dealt with some pretty major injuries and is turning 31 this season.

That's a pretty incredible deal considering that forwards with around the same production are getting $3.4m

good stuff

only issue here is that Hugues and Butcher will need to be renewed at the same time

Subban's money comes off the books.

There's a minute chance Hughes will cost more than 9 million in 3 years unless he wins the calder + has a few 30 goal seasons.

As we've seen recently, you don't need to be a top pairing player to get paid 7M in the NHL anymore.

I'm fully expecting Vatanen to get 6M or more as a UFA this summer, and I'm pretty confident Butcher will be a better player in three years.

He's a defenseman that scores a lot of points, that immediately puts him on every team's radar. There will be a lot of GMs eager to overpay him.

Just like everyone said Gardner was gonna get 7+?

The signing doesn't move me one way or another but can he just start going by Bill the Butcher already?

Still needs to be sheltered a bit (was the Devs #5/6 last year in ES TOI/G and zero SH) but definitely has improved at ES in the last year so I expect that should tick up a bit these next couple of years.

The key is the Devils know how to utilize him to maximize his game. Protect him at 5v5 and let him play to his strengths with tons of PP time. Adding Subban should only strengthen his ability to produce.

Definitely a fair deal for a guy poised to put up lots of points.

Decent deal. He regressed last season should have asked for more term. Gambling on his future to reach UFA sooner.
