Also, and not to sound like a broker record, teams are just capped out. Even if Shattenkirk is statistically worth $3.325 when compared to what other defensemen are making, if teams don't have the space, it doesn't really mean anything.

As we've seen recently, you don't need to be a top pairing player to get paid 7M in the NHL anymore.

I'm fully expecting Vatanen to get 6M or more as a UFA this summer, and I'm pretty confident Butcher will be a better player in three years.

He's a defenseman that scores a lot of points, that immediately puts him on every team's radar. There will be a lot of GMs eager to overpay him.

Still needs to be sheltered a bit (was the Devs #5/6 last year in ES TOI/G and zero SH) but definitely has improved at ES in the last year so I expect that should tick up a bit these next couple of years.

The key is the Devils know how to utilize him to maximize his game. Protect him at 5v5 and let him play to his strengths with tons of PP time. Adding Subban should only strengthen his ability to produce.

Definitely a fair deal for a guy poised to put up lots of points.
