All in all I don't hate the Islanders. I like that they were able to move onwards and upwards after they lost JT -- they didn't feel sorry for themselves and burn it down and try to rebuild again and I give them credit for that. And they provide a lot of entertainment value with their undying hatred of Tommy Tommy Wilson. That said, I will root for them to lose strictly because this place is awful and unreadable when debating Trotz and I'd have to delete my account if he won a Cup with the Islanders.
The team I can't stand the most is the Hurricanes. Really has nothing to do with the players on the team or their fans but before we moved to DC 25+ years ago we lived outside of Hartford and my family had season tickets to the Whalers. The Whalers were my first love and the only pro sports team in Connecticut -- though you would think that UConn Hoops was a pro entity given their legion of diehard fans and the media coverage they got -- and I will forever hate Peter Karmanos (former owner) for moving the team. I mean, what kind of total asshole gets sued by his own sons? I also feel irrational rage when I see them wearing the Whalers jerseys and I wish them nothing but failure and misery for as long as they exist.
Of all our traditional rivals, I don't hate the Isles. When I started watching hockey after the 1980 Winter Olympics as a young child, they were the premiere team in the NHL. I remember watching those games and HOF players. The fans on the other hand can be really irritating including some of my close friends when it comes to Islander hockey. I chose the Caps as my team and the Islanders just happened to be there as a thorn. I can't forget the 1987 playoffs either or 93's Ferraro ticking me off.
I understand you about the Whalers/Canes. It's hard to see a team you like relocate, especially with evil ownership or stupid reasons for moving. Hartford had some good years and always seemed to get in bloody battles playing the Bruins. They had a small loyal following too. To think two of those WHL teams relocated .
