Just to go over the 10 players who had the "surprise" 50 goal seasons and why they happened:

Jacques Richard: High-scoring junior star who ran into drug and alcohol problems when he turned. That one big year in Quebec was apparently the result of him actually making an effort to go clean; unfortunately it didn`t last.

Wayne Babych: Was plagued by injuries after his 80-81 season; he may have had more 50 goal seasons otherwise. Give Bernie Federko a little credit as well.

Gary Leeman: Leeman scored 50, but was invisible without the puck. Toronto`s strategy that season was to go all offence/no defence. As a result they ended up at .500. They realized they had to improve defensively to get better, Leeman didn`t fit in with that plan.

Danny Grant: As mentioned, injuries hurt him after that season, as well as losing Marcel Dionne to L.A.

Adam Graves: Any Ranger fans here that can explain this one?

Guy Chounaird: He and Bob MacMillan both had monster starts for Atlanta that season, but slowly went downhill in the second half. Could`ve been due to defences no longer being surprised by them.

Vic Hadfield: With all due respect to Hadfield, he was very fortunate to be on the line he was. Ratelle and Gilbert made the plays happen, Hadfield got to finish them.

Gary Roberts: He didn`t dramatically improve that season, he just finally got a chance. In the years before, Roberts always produced at even-strength, but with Calgary having Nieuwendyk, Fleury, Gilmour, Makarov etc. he rarely got to play on the power-play. That year, they gave him the chance.

Rick Kehoe: Just speculating, but his goal/assist ratio (55/33) indicates he may have been a designated garbageman that year. That season another Pen, Randy Carlyle, blossomed into a Norris winner. Must have killed Toronto fans to see the two ex-Leafs doing so well while the Buds had nothing to show for the two trades.

Hakan Loob: The year after his 50 goal campaign, the Calgary fans and media really gave him a hard time when his numbers dropped the next year. `88-`89 was a magical season for the Flames, yet there was Loob, seemingly the lone underachiever on the team. I wonder if that had anything to do with his decision to go back to Europe.

Nice work, HO, and good article, LL.

Just to expand on some of reckoning's takes:

*Only injuries kept Roberts from having several more 50-goal seasons. Was on pace for 55 goals and 100-plus points in 1992-93 when he suffered a near career-ending blood clot. Scored at nearly a 50-goal clip in 1993-94. Dominant after returning from the neck/shoulder injury in 1995-96. While not as hard-done-by as Neely with injuries (or as dominant as Neely in his prime), injuries did hamper Roberts' career.
*Funny thing about the Leafs in 1989-90: that was their best season in about a decade. They were swept in the first round by St. Louis, but they had a young core (Leeman, Damphousse, Olzyck, Marois and Iafrate) and everyone expected them to get better. They put a little more emphasis on defence at the start of 1990-91, but had a horrible start, traded Olzyck to Winnipeg, and fired the coach. The new coach really clamped down on the creativity. Leeman got hurt, never recovered. As quickly as Leeman went downhill, Daniel Marois plumetted even further.
*Anyone who watched Loob could tell you that his 50-goal season wasn't a surprise. One of the hardest-shooting Swedes ever. Had he stayed in North America, there's no telling the damage he could have done.

Adam Graves never was a real goal scorer: he had a very heavy (but not accurate) wrist shot and never used a slapper. Check his shooting %, I don't think he had a season above 14. As far as his goal explosion, he had something like 21 PPGs in 1994, in large part of having Leetch and Zubov blasting away from the point with him parked in front. But was never a "scorer" really.

Loob and Roberts scoring 50 goals each wasn't a huge surprise, particularly Loob with all his skill. What was likely more surprising from a Cagary POV was Niewendyk scoring 50 goals in his rookie season - I must say I wasn't expecting that, even though I thought he was a great prospect.

IMO bigger surprises than some of those (Hadfield was on the GAG line, Grant got to play with Dionne) was Dennis Maruk exploding for 110 goals in back-to-back seasons in Wash. and Blaine Stoughton netting 56 upon his return to the NHL (another Leaf castoff).

Maruk was a decent scorer with the Seals, but when he popped 50 goals and then a whopping 60 goals when he moved to the Caps, I was quite surprised. Maruk might have been all of 5-5, and he wasn't the fastest guy in the league, but he certainly showed in those two seasons that he could bury the puck. He never scored more than 36 goals in any other season. Stoughton scored 19 and 18 goals in his last two WHA seasons, being traded twice because of his lack of productivity after one big season with Cincinatti. He goes back to the NHL and notches 56 goals on the Whalers, despite never having scored more than 23 goals in his previous three NHL seasons. That one took me and a lot of people by surprise, but he folowed it up with 140 goals over his next three seasons.

Bernie Nicholls scoring 70 goals in 1989 shocked me, because he was his team's second-line center. Yes he got to play with Gretz on the PP, but it's not like they spent the entire season on the power play. His total of 70 was 24 more than he scored in his second-best campaign.

Did he not get onto a line with a Gretzky that year? Albeit a 37 year old Gretzky but he is called The Great One for a reason.

No. He nearly hit 40 goals playing with Gretzky in Gretz's final year in 1998-99. His 52-goal year came in 1993-94, playing on a line with Mark Messier.

    One-time-only 50 goal scorers - commentary

These guys are not 50-goal scorers except for one remarkable season but would still be known as goal scorers if they hadn't ever reached the symbolic mark.

Right player at the right time on lines that clicked. Good for them!

Every dog has his day. :biglaugh: And I say that as a fan of one of those two blueliners, but not for his scoring.

I wanted these guys to have more topend seasons. Oh well...

    Never liked these guys.

I'm drawing a complete blank. Are you kidding me? But then again, I was ten years old and it was the joke known as the Atlanta Flames.

I never had the pleasure! Sometimes I wish there were more historical documentaries about hockey.

Just to point out a few things:
*Craig Simpson was a two-time Stanley Cup champion who also tied for the scoring lead in the 1990 playoffs. Back injuries ended his career far too soon. He was also one of those special players who always saved his best for the post-season. Had he stayed healthy, he would have had more 50-goal seasons.
*Danny Gare actually had two 50-goal seasons. He also likely would have reached the 50 mark the year after his 56-goal campaign if not for injury. Tied for the goal scoring lead the year he had 56.
*Loob may be the most gifted goal scorer to ever come out of Sweden. I think he would have had a couple more 50 goal seasons if he would have stayed in North America.
*Sheppard did score at a 50-goal clip during the lockout year, so his 1993-94 season wasn't a total fluke. A great scorer in tight.
*Richer also had a second 50-goal season. He was wildly inconsistent, but when he was on, he could dominate.
*Hatfield's big year came on the Rangers GAG line (goal-a-game) with HHOFers Ratelle and Gilbert. Outside of that, he was a good, but not a dominant, goal scorer.
*Like Craig Simpson, Redmond had a couple years of high-end play, but his prime was cut short by injury.
*Hodge's big year came with Esposito and Wayne Cashman in Boston.

Gare was actually an outstanding player IMO. He had his 50's while playing on the checking line and I'm pretty sure that he led the league the year he had 56.
