You mean, when the Yotes are playing in Quebec?

Lol, while I am all for the Arizona hockey experiment being mercifully ended, based on reports of other posters, it sounds like Alex "Slim Shady" Meruelo and his dirtbag son are willing to toss some coin into the pot to keep the Yotes local and build an arena, casino and gambling empire.

I guess stranger things have happened.

Of course, I would be all for rounding up all of the scumbag pro team owners such as: the Meruelo's, Thomas Dundon (Carolina), Terry and Kim Pegula (Buffalo), Dan Snyder (Washington in the NFL), Jimmy and Dee Haslam (the Cleveland Browns), crackhead Jim Irsay of the Colts (who cost us the chance to watch Andrew Luck for another 10+ years), Stephen Ross (Miami Dolphins), all of the Dolans (both in NYC and Cleveland), Peter Angelos (Baltimore Orioles), Bob Nutting (Pittsburgh Pirates), Jerry Reinsdorf (Chicago Bulls and White Sox), etc.

Let's even toss the Wilpon's and Katz's in there for good measure (former Mets owners), and have them all tarred, feathered, drawn and quartered, then dragged through public squares.

I think Gov. Hochul is serious about this.:help:

I'll believe it when there are shovels in the ground.

Kathy Hochul is preparing to relocate Madison Square Garden (buffalochronicle.com)

There had been rumblings about this sort of thing for a bit if I recall correctly. Many people really don't want MSG where it currently is and I think they want it gone for the re-design of Penn Station. I've been gone so long I've stopped caring about it, but it'd be a huge undertaking and Dolan would need to be compensated to make it happen.

You are correct on both counts.

The only reason I don't dismiss this as rubbish entirely is that the story reports James Dolan may be on board with this. The way things are today with arenas anything that is 10 years old is middle aged. The current MSG renovation is already 8 years old if I'm not mistaken. The opportunity to have new gadgets and everything on the cutting edge in a new construction might be too enticing to let go by the boards.

I want to hear a direct quote from James Dolan on this. DeWitt Clinton Park is on the far west side in Hell's Kitchen. That's a long way from any public trnsportation.

Wasn’t he garden just renovated? With all the issues in the city it’s hard to believe that sinking at least $800 million into another sports arena would be a priority.
Like I said to @PK Cronin the renovation is from 2013. By the time this gets off the ground the renovation would be considered middle aged.

I could see him being on board too, because he knows he's going to get a sweetheart deal from NYS if it does happen or he'll be a gigantic pain in the ass to move out. It wouldn't be the first time MSG moved, wouldn't be the last either.

The far West Side had been opened up. Between the Extension of the 7 train to Javits Center and Hudson Yards, a lot of outside the box thinking has already occurred. The opportunity to put a new arena construction in Hell's Kitchen might look very appealing to Dolan.

what even is the nearest MTA line for DeWitt? Seems less practical to just have them play there instead of where the garden already is. and I hate that this also should've been a place for the jets stadium but never happened because of bloomberg, but it would've never happened anyways because of traffic

Been in the works for years prolly. I actually hate this a ton because the garden is still an iconic venue.
Nothing lasts forever. The Canadiens moved out of The Forum. The Maple Leafs moved out of Maple Leaf Gardens. Arenas and stadiums are practically disposable these days.

Besides this is MSG 2. The footprint still dates back to 1967. The same meh sightlines still exist, and the re-scaling of the seats into 2 levels gave the 200 level seating worse legroom than before.

oh that's so bad. C/E lines are so dingy. at least barclays wasn't that bad since you had like a ton of trains to come in from, and same with MSG. This new MSG proposal really could be bad for commuting fans in general.

Do it, get some air for Penn Station.

He'll get his pound of flesh for collaborating, even though I say don't get him a cent ever again. He's had enough of a windfall.

Meanwhile, sitting atop the now-buried train station is one of the state's biggest poster children for corporate tax giveaways: Madison Square Garden, which thanks to a state law passed at the behest of then-mayor Ed Koch in 1982 has now gone 37 consecutive years without paying property taxes. The total cost in lost revenue to the city over that time period is now $555 million, according to the latest calculations by the city's Independent Budget Office. If current property value trends continue, MSG's total tax break could clear $1 billion by 2030.

Madison Square Garden Hasn’t Paid NY Property Taxes In 37 Years. Will Cuomo Make It Permanent?

New construction gives the opportunity to take something already dingy and upgrade it, especially if it can be privately funded.

The story also mentions the possibility of taking a sparsely used railroad line on the far west side that connects to Penn Station and building a station near the new site. I think that's the line that Amtrak uses to route trains from Penn Station to Albany. Doesn't see a lot of daily train traffic.

Again, I still see this as far fetched. Nobody gives up a site above Penn Station to move someplace inaccessible. But New York City is in the middle of a building boom. Things are being put up in places I never imagined. So it's possible to make things like a new MSG for the next 40 years work.
