Guys I know winning will cure some of the attendance and how it will take time. I'm not saying that I expected last night to be a sell out or anything. What I was trying to say was we had freaking 7,900 people attend a game, that's pathetic.... Some AHL teams draw better than that! That number should of been at least 11K, which is still bad, but at least you're hitting your last years average. Okay you're gonna tell me it's a Tuesday night vs the Blue Jackets, we have sucked the last the 10 years. You're right attendance won't be amazing. But your marketing department knows that.... So guess what, do something about it to put a few thousand more butts in seats!!

Here comes my remarkable marketing suggestion! Thank me later. How about some freaking $3 beer nights or maybe at least half price beer nights for the boyssss?!?! That'd surely put some butts in seats. Have them on Tuesday night games when you're only expecting 7,900 people. Guarantee you do that you just sold an extra 2K+ tickets.

If you want a Canes example on how marketing can work. Last year the Canes did Star Wars night on a weekend game vs the Islanders. Our normal Saturday game we'd hit around 13K, that night they hit 16.6K. Why not do more things like this??

Sorry I'm ranting on this a lot but I truly do believe marketing the team plays slightly into our abysmal attendance. There's surely a way to reach more people.

Guys I once took a sports marketing class my junior year of high school and got an A, I totally know what it takes to market an NHL franchise because of that. JK

I don’t disagree that 7900 is really bad (hopefully rock bottom) but at the same time, I have to ask why you would expect them to hit last year’s average in a game like that one? By definition, you’re going to be below average half the time, and I would definitely consider a Tuesday game in October against Columbus to be a below-a average draw.

I honestly think the team sees a handful of games that are throwaway games. Games that they know will be poorly attended, therefore do nothing to boost it because it will be a lost cause regardless.

This game was one of them. An October Tuesday against an opponent with no moxie.

Bump marketing efforts up for the games where they have a chance of succeeding.

Is Justin Williams and Scott Darling really a “super exciting offseason”?

I can’t speak for anyone else, but personally I had no desire to see this game in person. Literally the ONLY thing going for it was that we haven’t lost hope in the season. Otherwise... it’s the second Tuesday in October, it’s 87 degrees outside, I’m already watching 2-3 football games a week, and I have other things happening after work than Blue Jackets vs Hurricanes. So I swapped out my tickets to get extras for other games, and watched like 10 total minutes of this one on TV. Hell, I watched more of the Vegas game than the Canes game tonight.

I mean I’m as hopeful about this team’s direction as the next guy, but they do still have quite a ways to go before they hit “must see” territory. In the meantime, Blue Jackets @ Canes remains one of the coldest tickets in major pro sports.

Well regarding the off-season, for starters signing Williams was actually a great move. It was a breath of fresh air compared to the years when we were used to having plugs who really had no shot at an NHL roster but were needed to fill the holes, and unlike previous former Canes signing here again, this one makes all kinds of sense. Francis also locked down Pesce and Slavin who are both worlds better than the Bobby Sanguinettis and the Brett Bellemores of the world. We witnessed an awesome rookie in Sebastain Aho who is clearly different than the Zach Boychuks and the Drayson Bowmans of years past. There was the news that a new owner w/ somewhat local ties is interested in buying the team and keeping it here.

Again, I can understand this game not selling out. But to not even crack 8k is not good.

I mean, I'm all in favor of the Williams signing. But he was 109th in scoring last year, as a winger. Buying tickets to go see Justin Williams is like buying tickets to go see Gustav Nyqvist or Kevin Hayes. Contract extensions for defensive defensemen... behind-closed-doors intrigues by a potential owner... those are summertime HFCanes headlines, not regular-people headlines.

8K isn't good but it really shouldn't be surprising. Look at the fact that this team has been at 11K-12K average for the past three seasons, the fact that they missed the playoffs AGAIN, the fact that they haven't added anyone whose level of play has been relevant this decade, and the fact that they are still owned by the same guy as last year. Add a Tuesday game in October against Columbus, on the same week as a HUGE Wolfpack football game and the incoming State Fair which sucks the energy out of everything else. Nothing about the situation suggested anything other than very-low attendance would be the outcome.

You're not wrong here. What gets me right now is that we have this problem of terrible attendance, and we have a front office that isn't really doing anything tangible to address it. And I'm not talking about half price tickets or dollar beer specials or anything like that. Just a simple promotion or giveaway strategically placed on the nights you know crowds would generally lag to encourage a larger crowd. You look around pro sports, and this is pretty much industry standard lately, and yet we only do a hat on opening night and..... ?

The Homegrown Series is great, but we need something else. We need our marketing department to get legitimately creative and do something fun and kitschy that gets people back in the arena. Call it a small bribe, whatever, but do something that would bring those fans on the fence back into the fold. We used to do bobbleheads, and those nights were packed at the arena. Why can't we do that again?

Yeah, but those bobbleheads were sponsored by a corporate partner. There's a reason that hasn't happened in years.

I will say, the Star Wars thing is a relatively easy and creative sort of thing, so hopefully they will continue doing stuff like that. I just wouldn't expect to see it at this time of year, or for just any random low-attendance game. There's only so many of those in the hopper each season.

The bobbleheads themselves was just an example. The problem is that they're not really doing anything to get fans in the door. I have less an issue with the specifics about what exactly happened last night or anything like that, and an more concerned with the much larger picture in that I'm just not seeing the dedicated and strategic push from the franchise to get people in the door this year. We have 8 Tuesday night home games this year, and the last thing I want is to see this kind of poor crowd attending each.

I mean, attendance sucks because the team has sucked for the longest time. It's not rocket science. And yes, those that are paying attention know that the team is on the rise, but that doesn't mean we're suddenly going to bring 3k more people to the games every night.

It's going to be a process to bring back the casual fan. One that's probably going to take a number of years of actual competitive play, not the moral victory bull that we've been trying to feast on in recent years.

So we're going to have poor attendance this year. We'll probably have poor attendance next year as well, even if we do manage to sneak into a WC spot. A good year or two isn't going to make up for 10 years of crap.
