Before becoming a rising star in the coaching industry, Slowik cut his teeth in Washington as a defensive assistant from 2011 to 2013 and was part of a star-studded coaching staff under former head coach Mike Shanahan that included four current head coaches: San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan, Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel, Green Bay Packers head coach Matt LaFleur and Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay.

Slowik returned to the NFL when Kyle went to San Francisco in 2017. He was a defensive quality control coach from 2017-2018 before going to the other side of the ball as an offensive assistant in 2019-2020. He was the offensive game passing game specialist in 2021 and the offensive passing game coordinator in 2022.

Slowik arrived in San Francisco alongside the Commanders new head of football operations, Adam Peters. That familiarity makes it easy to connect the dots and could give Washington a slight edge if Slowik has his options of where he'll become a head coach.

Along with Slowik's familiarity with Peters, the Commanders are armed with the No. 2 overall pick, one of their five picks in the top 100, and have the most cap space entering free agency. While the most important ingredient to Slowik's success, Stroud, wouldn't be able to follow him, the draft picks, cap space and an exec from his previous stop will give him the resources to build a team in the image he wants immediately.

Slowik, 36, followed Houston Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans and got his first shot at being an offensive coordinator this season. After Stroud's stellar rookie campaign, Slowik may have his name added to the list of Washington assistants who later became a head coach.

Washington requested to interview Slowik before hiring Peters on Friday. The Atlanta Falcons, Carolina Panthers and Tennessee Titans have also requested to interview the Texans offensive coordinator.
