As well they should; barring injury or being saddled with absolute trash like Anderson, who suppresses the production of everyone with whom he plays, Monahan has always looked fantastic.
Monahan is 50 point, face off artist. Good fit on Toronto's 3rd line. Worth a first everyday of week. Savard has already returned a first in past so his value has already been established.

Toronto will likely have interest in Savard and Monahan but Cowan will not be included in this. He’s the top prospect.

Jeff Carter has been traded - twice - for a 1st round pick, so his value is already established.

Teams should be lining up to give the Penguins a 1st rounder, right?

That's pretty steep price if you ask me. Coming from a Habs fan. Could see a 1st and maybe a 4th rounder if T.O was willing give that up. Otherwise look else where.

Monahan isn't worth that, and Savard is a negative asset to any other team.

Retaining half on both/either and/or including a later pick might get you a first from someone desperate, but there are a lot of forwards of all stripes that would fetch less and contribute more. Better defensemen have gotten very little the last little while too, and the market is equally saturated there with Columbus, Calgary, Edmonton, Boston and other teams that have defenders for the bottom pairing and up available, by hook or by crook.

And this is coming from someone who would have a long, hard laugh if Toronto actually made a trade like what was proposed.

You don't have much else to offer. Savard has a ring, right shot, signed to cheap contract. Exact fit for Toronto. Monahan improves Leafs third line.

You offer your '26 #1 instead of Cowan?

Montreal offers David Savard and Monahan for Cowan and Leafs '25 #1 pick?
Habs fans... again... never change. Never try to make proposals that make an ounce of sense for the other team nor come remotely close to a fair value exchange.

This one falls right in line with the many other insane HF rip offs OPs from Hab fans that heavily favor your club.

This one is basically two 1st round picks for Savard (LOL) and Monahan (LOL).

Monahan has a -6 expected goals for vs against, one of the worst in the NHL for forwards. 2nd worst figure on the Habs behind the NHL's worst forward for the same stat. Josh Anderson at -10... man is Anderson having a horrible season.

The 33 year old David Savard has played in just 7 games this year since he's been dealing with a significant injury. And he's not even a UFA after this season so you have to acquire his bad contract that runs thru next season paying the oft injured RHD $3.5MM per.

Also somewhat hilariously... Branden Gallagher is a +3.5 expected goals for vs against. By quite a margin, the best on the Habs for a player with 20+ games played this year. Suzuki is the only other player on the Habs on the positive side of zero for this stat (at +0.2).

So I assume we'll start to see the Gallagher for Cowen + 2024 1st + Knies proposals pretty soon.

Looking at the return, I'm assuming there is also some negative value contracts with term going back to MTL that just were excluded in the OP.

This is an idiotic take.

Why on earth would David Savard be a negative asset?
His poor play, both defensively and offensively, already slow skating, all of this noticeably declining from where he is at too, even his shot blocking, his main selling feature in spite of everything else, is way down, and all this for a cap hit that could be used to cover someone useful. Two of the D around him on the Montreal depth chart are being valued very little by Habs fans themselves, and make less than a quarter of his cap hit for similar minutes and results, The guys cooked, overpriced and redundant.

Or do you think the OP is onto something for two such highly prized assets as Savard and Monahan?
