I think the best stretches to compare the two goalies are

03-04 / 11-12 for Kiprusoff, age 27-35, 9 seasons
12-13 / 20-21 for Rask, age 25-33, 9 seasons

Those were the time frames both goalies were their teams starting goalies, went through a lockout, won the Vezina trophy and lost in the Stanley Cup Finals.

Rask benefited from less workload, as in total he played almost 100 fewer regular season games. His win % was 58.59, while Kiprusoff was at 54.89%, but the Bruins had the better teams finishing top 4 in the league 5 times, while Calgary never did. The Flames average finish was 13th.

In the playoffs Rask played almost double the games throughout their careers, but their numbers were similar.

Internationally both goalies had a single strong short tournament, Kipper in the World Cup and Rask in the Olympics, but neither goalie were able to bring home gold. They didn't play much for Finland in general.

Both guys came close to winning something big but just fell a little bit short. There's been times when I've felt they were overrated, and times when I think they're really really good. As a Finn overall they've felt close for me. Kipper is probably going to get the tiebreaker for a lot of people for having played on worse teams.

Rask did win the Cup as a backup, just not as a starting goaltender.

And played multiple seasons of 70+GP

precisely: 74,74,76,76,73,71,70...... from age 30-36

thats really insane

I wish there was a tool that measured GP adjusted Sv% and GAA. While Kipper did have some good to excellent seasons in those categories during those years, he did have a few seasons where his Sv% and GAA were poor.

2005-2006: Elite
2006-2007: Good
2007-2008: Below average
2008-2009: Poor
2009-2010: Good
2010-2011: Below average
2011-2012: Very good
2012-2013: Bad.

those Flames teams werent all that great, didnt help his SV%.

He was top 5 in Vezina voting 4 times.... Its not Lundqvist great, but he would be on par with a Price/Luongo/Rinne tier imo, but with a shorter career.

I mean fair, but nonetheless the truth is he had 3 seasons of below average to poor stats in those 7 seasons of 70+ GP. Only one season you can truly consider elite 2005-2006.

he had 2 seasons around 906 SV%, fine, but his four top 5 Vezina seasons were merited... eg. he was 3rd for Vezina in 06-07 with a .917 SV%, only Brodeur (.922) and Luongo (.921) where higher, Lundqvist was tied.

The thing is all 4 of these goalies posted insane 70+GP seasons, so their SV% was bound to dip.... 05-06 and 06-07 were higher scoring years too (because of PP hike)

Even this past season, Shesty had a phenomenal year, but still only played 53GP. No way hes above 930 if he played 15-20 more games... Saros has the most GP at 66 at had a 922 SV% in a high scoring season.

Went with Tukka for longevity but Kip was certainly the best goalie in the league for a stretch.

This is more absurd when you remember Kipper lost a year of his peak due to a lockout. Talking about another 40-45 wins in addition to the great numbers he put up.

2003-2004 is probably the one you're referring to? Yes he was technically elite that year, but the sample size is smaller, so I didn't include.

Still finished as the Vezina runner up and 4th in Hart voting though. And if you include playoffs, it was 64 games at the same level. Considering 05-06 was the next stretch of games we have from him, I think we can be fairly confident in his sustainability despite the sample size

Rask is a perfectly fine goalie but this poll is setting him up to fail.

Man, I miss watching exciting goalies in the league. Kipper was damn fun to watch. Goaltenders are so boring these days and the talent pool is the worst it's been in decades.

Kiprusoff had a great peak but was average outside of it. Rask was consistently great his entire career.

Rask is 4th all time in SV% (.921). Kipper is 40th (.912).

Rask is 15th all time in GSAA (150) in 564 games. Kipper is 50th (64) in 623 GP.

You can't really look at SV% at face value without context.. It is the same as for any advanced stats. That's the common mistake people do.

This is the same thing as how people used to look at +/-, for example

Kipper was one of the best goalies I’ve ever seen play. His athleticism was close to Hasek and he is the reason the flames were never able to rebuild because when he played for them he always stole them about 20-30 points a season

Do you know the D corps Boston had infront of Rask compared to what Kipper was carrying? Context is a lot here.

Rask and Rinne are both similar in that their stats are significantly inflated.
