Ah, man. That's not news I wanted to hear. Always loved Mean Gene. Played his role so well and I felt like his absence in WWF was always noticeable after he left for WCW in the 90's.

RIP Mean Gene

Damn, I always enjoyed Mean Gene. This one sucks...

Was he ill? I always thought he was in fairly decent shape.

Was always one of my favourite non-wrestlers growing up watching wrestling.

RIP Mean Gene

RIP to a legendary host and announcer and have always enjoyed his demeanor.

His reports for the big PPVs back in the day hyped them like no other today.

Sucks that we're not even 48 hours into the year and another one from the golden era is gone :(

Really sad to hear this news, he was a legend.

I grew up in Winnipeg watching AWA Wrestling and Mean Gene was the best!

I actually remember watching this promo with my uncle.

He may be an apprentice carpenter, but I guarantee you he is a seasoned ring veteran!

damn, thats a pretty big piece of my childhood gone.

remember being a little kid and watching Saturday AM wrestling like Superstars. Squash matches and multiple taped promos/interviews all featuring Mean Gene.

His smirks and comments when things went awry in those taped promos were gold

Sad day for all wrestling fans. RIP, legend.

I wanted to know the back story on his moniker....I mean, for a man as beloved as "Mean" Gene Okerlund was, I don't remember there ever being anything remotely mean about him.

Apparently Jesse Ventura gave it to him and it just stuck, I guess.

In his AWA days, Okerlund was given the nickname "Mean Gene" by Jesse "The Body" Ventura – an irony, considering that throughout the years many wrestlers and promotion staff considered Okerlund the friendliest person in the game. Okerlund was close friends with the late Bobby Heenan, Hulk Hogan and The Iron Sheik. Okerlund served as best man at the Iron Sheik's wedding.

Speaking of the Sheik, didn't he use to twist it around and call him "Gene Mean"?

The Sheik absolutely did that, now that you mention it, hahahaha.
