Pretty simple. If you were Glen Sather, do you let MSL walk, or try to re-sign him? Lets assume that he'll be fair about his contract, and won't ask for any more than 4 million (whether that'll be a bonus-ladden deal, or year by year, will not be known).

I let him walk. Glorified PP specialist at this point, but he's terrible in his own zone, and really detrimental to our possession game. I also feel like he doesn't fit in anywhere we play him.

If it comes down to two of Hags, MZA or MSL, I would keep Hags and MZA, if for no other reason than Hags and MZA are both much, much younger. We might get another 2 years out of MSL, they may even be very good years, but the other players will provide a longer term benefit.

If that isn't the way the Rangers go, then the most sensible plan would be to trade Hags and sign the other 2. Hags will be RFA, so he can easily be traded at the draft or in the summer, and he should garner a decent return. I like Hags and think we will miss his speed and PK ability, but from an asset management standpoint, trading him would make sense.

Total contract at $4m?

Re-sign in a ****ing heartbeat.

That "glorified PP specialist" is also 2nd on the team in even strength points with 21.

That might have been an exaggeration, but he's so bad in his own zone, and is prone to stupid offensive zone giveaways, he kills the play more than he keeps it going

I would resign him.

I want to see him come off the 1st line and be moved to the 3rd line, putting Stempniak or Miller on the 1st RW slot, which allows him to better exploit 3rd line matchups and cover any mistakes (if any) Hayes makes

I watch the games and he creates offense with little plays. MSL is a quick attack player. Always has been. He is a counter-attack, use his sped for a quick chance. Not a puck control, slow the game down ,etc. Just my take

I do too, and MSL gives the puck away a lot more than he drives the play. He's good for some great passes and shots, but he really needs his linemates to do all the work for him. He's a "quick counter player" in every sense of the word, and that's what I don't like about him.

I'd be totally okay with him being this kind of player if he didn't give the puck away so much.

You have to re-sign him, but I really, really hope he's going to be willing to play for a "token" contract for repeated chances to win the Cup in NYC. I'm talking a Paul Kariya in Colorado type contract. I have to believe that MSL is willing to take a major paycut to keep playing at "home" and for the team to remain competitive. It is not in his best interest, in any way, to force the team's hand wrt money moving forward.

I want to see him on the 3rd line with sheltered minutes and see how he does. Play him with Hayes and Hags/Stempniak, move Nash back to Stepan's wing, and promote Miller to Brassard's other wing. These lines don't drive possession enough, and are too one dimensional. I feel like it'll bite us sooner rather than later, we don't generate enough shots.

I mean, it's very hard to complain about, we have been winning plenty of games. But I feel like it's been masked by our explosive offense all year. Eventually you have games like the BOS one where your luck isn't there, and you aren't generating enough shot attempts.

The powerplay specialist is second on the team in even strength points (you can say third if you want since Stepan is way behind in games played) and the posession stuff is so incredibly overrated. It's really useful but it's always taken as being the only thing that matters. Misuse of a state is worse than ignorance of a stat by a huge margin. His relative corsi for the last five years has been -2.4, -1.3, 0.3, -2.0, -2.3. This is nothing new for him.

yes I would. Hes a leader on this team now. He likely will take a bonus deal to get all the others under contract.

I let him walk.

He is going to decline at some point, and I would prefer to stay ahead of the curve.

also, we have 2 young stud winger prospects in Duclair and Buch

The only way I would want him to stay is if he signs and EXTREMELY team friendly contract.

It depends, although I voted no

If the choice were under the cap they can only keep 2 of Zucc, MSL, Hagelin, I'd vote no to MSL but that too depends on what Zucc and to a lesser extent Hagelin really require to be re-signed.

Signing St. Louis to a one or two year deal leaves you options--you're not tied down to the player for long. Giving someone 5 years is a bit different. The money is locked up unless you move him and if it's another player coming back then some of the money is still locked up.

If I were to look at MSL on a 1 or 2 year for $4 mil per as compared to Zucc for 4 or 5 years at somewhere between $4.5-$5 mil per and knowing I have scoring wingers like Duclair and Buchnevich coming along I think I'd lean towards St. Louis. The way things are right now though I'm not moving either--I'm hoping the cap goes up enough--that St. Louis will be reasonable and somehow we'll find a way to fit everyone in.

I'm guessing that's not going to happen though and that we'll be left in the end choosing between MSL or MZA.

Hagelin should be coming back either way and the Rangers IMO can really not afford to lose him. His speed makes our third line a constant threat. Excellent penalty killer--great work ethic. IMO he's our best bottom line player. He shouldn't be that expensive either.

I don't know I am in between both camps. He is a good scorer but I see him give the puck away an awful lot lately. I don't think that's going to get better with age. I would wait and see if he would take a discount or what kind of contract he wants.

Edit: I think Hagelin is very underrated especially come playoff time and that the Rangers need to find a way to keep him. So I would be very careful with MSL's contract and who out of MSL, Hagelin and Zucc do you want to keep or more to the point, who can they keep.

What's amazing is no one here claimed it's the only thing that matters.

Since he's one of the most talented players in the NHL I'm more inclined to not care about his possession stats, but he gives the puck away so much in all three zones that it becomes a real problem.

He's on pace for 67 points and ~27 goals. That production is VERY hard to replace. He fits in well with pretty much any center, helps the PP (which was horrible for a long time) and he has a ton of experience. He isn't going to ask for the moon, why let him go?

I love MSL. I love that he's a leader. I love that he's clutch. And I love that he's 2nd on the team in points despite playing out of position and bad for the first month. That said I do not like his play much at all in the defensive zone. I know he can be better, we saw it last year. He's coasting quite a bit this season. I hope he elevates his game in the playoffs and helps us win.

I would absolutely take him back. I have a feeling he takes cheap 1 year deals until he retires.
