I know not all of these names are comparable in position/ skill/ impact/ timing or circumstance when signing their contracts, but if there are guys like Tavares, Bobrovsky, Jones, Skinner all making $9-11M... There's no way I'm settling for something like high 8s or in the 9s if I'm Nathan. It has to be something like $11M or so, because he deserves higher than that, he is one of the best players in the league, and signing for something like $11 or $11.5M is leaving money on the table. This way the team has an extra couple million in cap space while he is still a ~top 5 paid player.

If Panarin, Tavares, Doughty, Karlsson are making $11M+, I don't see how you get MacKinnon under $12M. Obviously he could give them a straight up discount but that would be a gift from him to the team.
