Both sides have too much to lose and nothing to gain by waiting untill next January to start up serious negotiations again. And don't kid yourself into thinking Goodenow would ever even consider negotiating before a drop dead date because he wouldn't know how. There will be zero reason to negotiate seriously in August or September or November with a guy like Goodenow. The more I read about Goodenow, the more I despise him. He's a deadline hunter whos only tactic is to push the industry to the point of no return and then call the owners bluff. Thats been his MO all along, he has no plan B. Its what he did as a management representative when he waited out the workers for 11 months while they all went broke and were forced to come back to work.
If the owners would be willing to cancel this season (which I personally don't believe to be the case) then I take them at their word that the industry is sick beyond belief. If we were dealing with 2 rational and logical parties here, then I would be 100% certain of a season starting up shortly. For some reason though, everyone involved in hockey, owners and players, are some of the most stubborn and inept businessmen/entertainers on the face of the earth. Its for this reason that they may defy logic and scrap the season. I'm thinking its 50/50 at this point. If they do, they all deserve what they are going to get. Which is 1/2 the revenue and 1/2 the salaries.
