While he may not be the best at running the PP, over the last 5 years Morgan Rielly has averaged the 22nd most minutes on a PP in the NHL for a defenseman, while scoring the 15th highest number of points for a dman during that time. While averaging 2:45 TOI/PP/G he's nearly 30 seconds shy of the average number of minutes/PP/G that the 14 players who have scored more points than he has get/G. On average, Rielly scores .24 points/g on the PP. By comparison, Chris Letang (12th in scoring by a defenseman over the last 5 years) averages .266 points/g on the PP while averaging 37 seconds more PP time/g. Roman Josi, 4th overall: .3 points/g on the PP while averaging 28 seconds more per night.

The real standouts are: Makar (.43 points/g, 1:07 more time), Q. Hughes (.38 and 51 seconds more time), and old man Hedman (.4/game with 36 seconds more...also number 1 during that 5 year period).

Pietrangelo, Suter, Theodore, Chabot, Morrisey, Werenski, Ekblad, Hamilton and Jones: all have fewer points during this time frame, all with a comparable number of games played, all within 20 seconds of TOI (+ or -) save Morrisey who is averaging 29 seconds less/game, having played 9 fewer games than Mo, and sits 17 points behind him @ .19 points/game.

This suggests that the margins are pretty thin unless you've got a real talent on your team. Part of the Morgan Rielly can't contribute on a PP syndrome, is, I believe, largely based on familiarity with the player and hoping for more. As it stands by points and minutes, he's doing pretty darned well in comparison to many in the league.
Good post.
I've never understood the criticism of Mo on the PP. Mostly it seems like he doesn't have a big slapper so there must be a better option. Then you watch many of the d-men with the boomer from the point and notice they're not doing the other things at Rielly's level. That's not to say there aren't better PP QB's but there aren't that many around the league and there are zero on this team.

A couple of notes...

Denis Malgin has been on the ice for ZERO goals against, 5v5.
Giordano has been on the ice for ONE goal against 5v5.

Robertson has been on the ice for a team high 4.0 GF/60 5v5, while also have the THIRD lowest GA/60 at 1.6 (For forwards with three or more games)

Our team is now 8th in GA/60 in the league. PP is 8th in the league. PK is only 23rd, GF/60 22nd.

It would have been hard to predict, that we'd be a top 10 team in GA/60, while bottom 10 in GF/60... If we can continue our strong defensive play, and improve our output, that would be great.

8th is one better than the defensively sound and solid Hurricanes who are 9th GA/G.

We need to score more goals at 5on5. We put on more offensive pressure, and everything else works out if we maintain our play. PK had a couple of bad games but they are playing much better than the numbers show (top 5 in xGA/60).

Agreed

Having a big clapper isn’t always a good thing. Like you said Rielly has many underrated skills. For example, he is very good at keeping pucks in the zone.

You'd think but I saw something that could've passed for, if not a hit than at least a pretty stern glare!
For sure, we won't win every game. The chronic complainers are just waiting to pounce.
Bunch of shameless whiners
Time for the media to eat crow. Nope, just mock the fans.
Cmon AL there's a faction of this fanbase that deserves not only mocking but some serious denigrating.
Two really good games in a row. I guess our four eyed young inexperienced GM who doesn't understand the game gets to keep his another job for another few days. Sorry for y'all who wanted us to keep losing so we could get a new GM, you're just gonna have to do a little waiting I guess. :)
3 really! The Philly game was pretty much a complete showing for 56 of the 60 minutes, marred only of course by the "incident."

Creepy crawly creeepy crawly

Nice and thanks. How did Lilly played
Pretty much mistake free, and very little hair when he was in his own zone. He was physical when he had to be and got involved in front of his own net. He handled the puck with complete confidence and made good passes getting the team started up ice.

Holl and Brodie both had very strong games as well, they were highly effective offensively and neither guy got caught on pinches like it can sometimes happen.

It would be great if somehow a miracle occured and Muzzin returned to full health and regained the resilience of his 25 year old self.

Not 1 of the 6 Dmen made any glaring giveaways which was nice for a change

What's our Sh% compared to the league?

Honestly would like Malgin on the top line instead of Kerfoot. Kerfoot had two grade A chances that he failed to capitalize .

Malgin - Matthews - Nylander
Robertson - Tavares - Marner
This was our top 6? Where was Bunting?

I still can’t believe there was a poster who watched Nylander’s goal and called him lazy for it. Indefensible proof that your uncle from Woodstock isn’t ever going to like him.
Well, there was some dumb luck involved (the puck off the skate, off the stick and between Andersen's legs), but lazy? No. That was a hustle goal.

GTA or the UK
Fred Andersen losing a goaltending dual to Erik Kallgren was hilarious.

He's always good for a stinky goal, that Freddie. The Leafs could be down to their 9th organizational goalie who can only play on 1 leg, and I'd still not miss Fred. That was some PTSD inducing stuff.

Dumb luck or talent? We've seen him do similar stuff before, so I'd say the latter.
