I don't think there was any chatter like that coming from the Rangers management. The people saying he was available were writers from various teams that were just speculating.
Kevin Allen (hockey hall of fame caliber writer) on one of Eklund's shows a while back, said that he spoke to several GMs regarding Lafreniere. He said that a few GMs contacted the Rangers inquiring on the availability of Lafreniere and Drury said he's not available. Kevin Allen then said something to the effect "c'mon, Lafreniere was never available guys". Kevin Allen still has many contacts and sources in the NHL. If he says that he spoke to several GMs that said Drury denied his availability, I think there's high confidence in that such is true. This is actually still on YT on Eklund's channel. I'll trust Kevin's word over random speculation from anonymous posters here.
