Missing Fraser. I'd take 6 Helgesons over 1 Fraser...
Fraser! GROSS! How the hell did we have him playing 60+ games one year here? I guess Lemaire was able to make him look a little less awful than he really was, which was still worse than your average terrible player. I think Lemaire system Fraser was probably on par with Helgeson. Non-Lemaire Fraser was like really an embarrassment to professional athletes everywhere.
Add a Magnan - Gragnani/Warsofsky pairing there too.

They'd make a pretty good street hockey team somewhere. I'd bet they'd be pretty good if matched up against regular Joe's like me and some of boys.

Gragnani wasn't the worst thing ever, we just used him like the former #17 on the PP when he was up briefly last season. We had a 2 minute 5 on 3 and he was out there and kept blasting it wide. Then he was out there for what seemed like the entire 2 minutes of a couple other one man advantages. I don't think he was as bad as Helgeson. He was probably on par with Stollery.

I hated Warsofsky here, but he did have to play with Helgeson most of the time and that will do no one any good.

Devils are rebuilding, not competing.

Protecting Lovejoy over Merrill (or even Moore) is foolish. Lovejoy means far less to our future than Merrill. I would be pissed if Shero protects Lovejoy.

Just to clear something up though, Prout has little to no bearing on the Devils for the expansion draft. All he is at this point is a 7th defender drafted by Castron (so there must be something he likes about him). Devils already have Merrill, Moore, and Lovejoy that fill the 40/70 requirement and they will have to choose between one of them with Greene/Severson being protected.

I really don't think Triumph is a proponent of protecting Lovejoy in the expansion draft. I think a lot of people feel like Shero WILL protect Lovejoy though, not that he actually SHOULD protect him.

I'm starting to think he probably will too. I would definitely protect Merrill over him. If Merrill was having another mediocre season, maybe I'd pass on that one though, especially if Lovejoy was actually being used in his proper role and flourishing in it.

I don't think so though.

Everything Shero is doing right now is long-term. Merrill means way more to this team long term than Lovejoy ever will. Greene and Severson are the obvious two.

Only way I could see him protecting Lovejoy is if he decides to go 8 skaters if we don't add another (or sign one of our non-exempt players to fill this spot) 40/70 forward. Then maybe Shero protects 4 defenders and 4 forwards (Hall, Henrique, Zajac, Palmieri) and leaves Cammalleri to Vegas.

They actually have to protect Clowe iirc because of the NMC, no? That would complicate going the 4-4 route.

Let's be real here, Merrill is showing he's capable of being an NHLer, but he just turned 25 years old. How much better is he going to get? Is he really part of 'the future' being 2 years away from UFA? He's still only played 34 games so far this season.

Obviously I would still protect him over Lovejoy, but it's hard to overlook the disparate roles they're playing this year. If the Devils lost Lovejoy, they would either have a lot of faith that they can sign Shattenkirk or that Santini can handle 19 minutes a game. I'm just not sure they have that faith yet.

Shero could pick up a guy off the street outside the Prudential Center and he would play probably at a comparable level to Lovejoy this year.

I honestly would not be worried at all for replacing Lovejoy. They will protect him, but the smart move would be not protecting him and literally playing anyone at RHD over him next year.

Why would we protect Lovejoy? God I hope not. Greene, Severson, and Merrill, no?

Vegas probably wouldn't take Lovejoy anyway, unless they need to get to whatever floor they need to get to (is it just the regular league floor?). Hell, if I was GMGM I might trade us a pick just to not take anybody.

Theres a choice. We can do the 3 defenseman, 7 fwd and 1 goaltender or we can do 8 skaters (either F or D) and 1 goaltender. Considering how the roster is composed currently, my bet is we go with the 8 skaters, 1 goaltender route.

No forwards "have" to be protected since the 1st and 2nd year pros are automatically protected and we have a few guys who are unsigned for 17-18. Only NMCs have to be. No forward has one except Clowe who doesnt count. NTCs don't have to be protected.

Forwards that will be: Hall, Palmieri, Henrique, Zajac.

I think its almost guaranteed that DSP and Cammalleri will be our unprotected forwards as of now, but if someone got re-upped that could change (i.e. Josefson or Bennett). We have to have 2 unprotected.

Defenders protected: Severson, Greene (NMC), Merrill, and either Moore or Lovejoy. That leaves Prout and one of the two as unprotected. We only have to have 1 unprotected, but we only have 2 forwards eligible for the ED to begin with after the "big 4", so we can't protect one of them as the 8th skater. I don't know if we have to protect 8 skaters. If we don't then potentially we can leave both of those defenders unprotected, but I suspect we'll protect one of Moore or Lovejoy.

Vegas can take (and has to) only one guy. I could see them taking Cammalleri, but it obviously depends what other teams are leaving out there since cap space etc. matters so much.

I wouldn't take Camm. Two more years of that doesn't seem like smart money management.

I guess it'll hinge on performances down the stretch, but I'd probably rather hold Cammy for a couple more years than Lovejoy. Then again, we have more LWs knocking on the door than RHD.

It completely depends on who is available in the ED from the other teams. There could be a situation where they NEED to take a guy like Camm simply for salary reasons + he's a guy they can feasibly insert into a top 6. He may be finished here, but he could still be effective elsewhere after the change of scenery. It's not like he has 5 years left either.

He doesn't deserve to be protected at any rate.

We likely can't protect Cammalleri so if they want him, they'll get him. We have to have 2 FWDs with specific contract conditions exposed. It's him and DSP as the only ones right now. We're not leaving any of the other 4 exposed. Cammalleri is the one guy I could see Shero try to work a deal to get Vegas not to pick him unless he wants him gone or at least is cool with him being taken.

Didn't read the entire thread but I will say this :

I'm at least glad that Quincey will get a shot at playing in the postseason this year 'cause he sure as hell won't get it with us.

A 5/6 d-man eh? 2nd pairing for you!

We'll see how he plays. There wasn't much value to get yesterday, and if it does actually help us in the expansion draft in exposing/protecting certain players, then so be it.

I seem to remember Prout having a heavy shot and being very physical. Hopefully he just needs a change of scenery. Columbus got very good very quickly, could just be a case of a guy getting lost in the shuffle.

And he's a Castron guy, I'm sure that had something to do with it. Well, whatever, worst case scenario he becomes another DSP that gets scratched and scrubs out in a year.

At the very least we'll have somebody to beat up people when we're beating the Flyers 4-0 in the 2nd period

I for one, love that we have some sort of physical presence on the backend. Lovejoy is the closest thing we have to a physical dman, but we need him out there (unfortunately) and he's a little old to be fighting.

Prout will stand up for his guys. I hate seeing Taylor Hall get hit and then nothing happens. Maybe it's just an old school thing with me? But this team is soft.
